5th mar Breakfast today was a yummy banana shake and honey pancake!!! mmm. After getting our transfer back to Krabi bus station and being delayed by 45mins as they overbooked the bus, they end up cramming 5 people onto the backseat and putting stupid stickers on us yet again. When we arrive at Khao Lak we try to get to the National Park to stay in some bungalows but that was a waste of time and we end up sitting around for 2hrs trying to decide what to do as Khao Lak seems too touristy (became this way when all the volunteers showed up). Eventually we check into a place called Tarzans where there is only one king sized bed that we have to share but the room is huge and everywhere else is pretty much ... read more

Hello again, Well I've done my last day working as a volunteer here. I'm staying on here until Saturday as it's a nice town & the social life is great! This morning I hitched to the nearest Post Office which is about 15 minutes away by car. Got there & realised that to call it a Post Office was a little generous & was told to come back tomorrow as there was no one working today. Aaaaaargh!!! I'm just sending some clothes home that I know I'll never wear cos it's too hot here (I'm not complaining). I've started doing the English homework that I've been given to do before my course. There's loads to do! That's why I'm taking a couple of days off to try & do it by the pool ;) Watched a ... read more

From Phuket's lovely beach at Nai Yang, I travelled north to the more rustic beach at Khao Lak. It was here that I noticed the most devastation from the Tsunami.... read more

Hi there chums, Still in Khao Lak, this will be my third week!! Sadly however many of the friends that I have made are leaving or have left this weekend. I start my TEFL/CELTA course on Monday 20th so have to get to Phuket city next weekend. I'm therefore going to hang out here until then & do a few more days with the project & then have a couple of days to relax. The beach here is nice, but I've also found a hotel with a pool that looks out to the sea & it 's a really pretty spot so I'll hang out there today I think. I'm really going to have to cut down on the great food & cocktails as the weight that I had lost a few weeks ago is starting ... read more

Hi again, I'm really enjoying my time at Khao Lak. It's nice to be in one place for more than a week & not having to repack my back-pack. I think I get know more people here every day. Most of them are either from the US, Australia or the UK. Still helping as a volunteer & mostly on painting detail. I kind of enjoy it in a sad kind of way but I am getting extremely bored with white emulsion. Tomorrow I will probably be staring at the ceiling mostly....no...not in my room :) I did come off the back of a motorbike last week but fortunately just have grazes & bruises as a result. We were pretty "ting tong" as they say here as we tried get 3 of us up a very steep ... read more

We left Krabi by semi-randomly but very efficiently boarding buses until we arrived in Khao Lak. Many parts of Khao Lak were completely wiped off the map by the Tsunami but we stayed in the most central part which is high up away from the shore and had been unaffected. Here we decided to Complete our PADI Open Water diving qualification as it was way cheaper than in Austrailia. After a day of theory and pool work finishing off our last few skills we took a speed boat out to the Similan Islands ( a top diving location ) for our open water dives. Our second dive was especially good with loads of fish, a ship wreck, huge corals and turtles. Once we were duly qualified we moved on as the very hard hotel beds were ... read more

Lately I've been placing some photos that may not really show what's going on here, so this time I'll be more candid. Maybe this time you can see what I'm doing here besides getting lots of sunshine and meeting lots of friends. The Bangkok temple group photo was taken about three weeks ago when I was asked by Airline Ambassadors International (AAI) to be their Project Manager on a proposal by the temple to build a small trade school within the compound. About ten students from disadvantaged backgrounds will attend a 3-4 month school to learn electrical skills, electronics repair and assistant nursing. Just recently I received an email from AAI that they have decided to fund this project. This means I could be in Bangkok for around 4-5 months. In the interim period I have ... read more

Hi there, Left beautiful Railay on Sunday by boat to Ao Nang & from there by bus to Khao Lak. I wanted to get here so that I could register with the Tsunami volunteer group who have a centre here. Every Monday is when they take new volunteers & assign them to a project. Khao Lak is a town on a long stretch of coastline in South West Thailand. It was very badly hit by the Tsunami with a loss of one in three people and for some of the islands or peninsulas it was one in two. I have seen two large boats that are now some way inland following the wall of water that brought them in. It's hard to imagine a 40ft wall of water with pressure of about 7 tonnes per square ... read more

In light of all that has been going on here with playgrounds, tsunami relief, orphanages, and traveling to villages spread out along the main roadway, I do find some time to enjoy myself. But even that becomes part of the overall picture here in Thailand. I have found that even my new friends are connected to my personal pilgrimage here. The first photo of the large group of people are the wonderful people of the tsunami refugee camp that was set up here just a week after the tsunami. Funded by the Duang Prateep Foundation in Bangkok, it has dwindled from 6,000 inhabitants to a mere one hundred. Among these left at the camp are thirty children. About three to four times a week I visit the camp either while on my way to a project ... read more

It's Thursday evening and time for a quick update... I made some phone calls this morning and connected with Pastor Wasan (local Thai pastor) and some YWAMers (Youth With A Mission - Christian organization; YWAM website ) who are building a couple of houses in Baan Nam Khem (I think that's the name!). It's about 30 kilometers north of Khao Lak and was hit hard by the tsunami. There are two YWAM teams currently in the area - one from Cape Town, South Africa, and the other from Colorado Springs. I met most of the group from Cape Town a few days ago in Khao Lak before I went on the scuba dive trip. It so happens that the leaders of the 2nd group (from Colorado Springs) were in Khao Lak this morning so I was ... read more
