I separated from the herd today and stayed in Chiang Rai while the rest of the tour group went to Myanmar. I'm sure Myanmar is a cool place to visit, but I wanted a little time to explore on my own. Chiang Rai is the perfect size for pedestrian exploration. I was able to walk all around the city. I walked through the huge market area, visited three wats, spent some time at an Internet Cafe catching up on email, had a foot massage, visited with a monk, bought a pretty silk skirt and shirt set, hung out with ex-pats at a little German bar, and finally caught up with the group when they came into town for dinner. Katerstimmung den ganzen Tag, schlecht geschlafen, die Hitze war unglaublich heute nacht. Dementsprechend lange habe ich heute im Bett gelegen, gleich essen gehen, und dann wieder an den Rechner. Heute abend bleibe ich zu Hause. Aber ansonsten ist hier alles im Lot, die letzten beiden einsamen Wochen brechen nun an, ich freue mich jeden Tag mehr darauf, endlich Myriam diese wunderschöne Gegend zu zeigen, und mit ihr einen traumhaften Urlaub mehr zu verbringen.... read more

On the way to Phayao, we stopped to watch some rice workers in the field. I tried my hand at cutting the rice, much to the amusement of the workers. I guess I'd better stick with my day job. We took a coffee break at Phayao, a lovely little town near a beatiful big lake. Ole said that families liked to picnic there. One of the town specialties is "jumping shrimp". Little shrimps are collected from the lake. They are mixed, ALIVE, with cilantro, garlic, lemongrass and chilies. One then scoops up the mixture and gets it into the mouth before the shrimp jump off the spoon. I was not as brave as some of my fellow travelers. I like my shrimp scampied. Today we visited a rice mill at Baan Suan. The Thais take rice very seriously - it's their biggest export. If your idea of rice is a box of Minute Rice, you have missed out! Try getting a bag of jasmine rice at your local Asian market. It has a fragrant aroma and tastes light and delicious. I rinse the rice before boiling it, which makes it less clumpy. Anyway... we saw how rice is hulled and produced in various forms, from whole brown rice to fine rice flour. We then stopped at Sukhothai historical park. It is an amazingly beautiful park with many ancient monuments. Sukhothai was the first kingdom of Thailand in 1238. The Buddhist statues and wats obviously had old Cambodian influences. OPD mit den Plastikern, schon so langsam Routine, aber ich habe eine replantierte Hand gesehen, die Bewegung war sogar schon in den Grundzügen wieder da. Dann Mittagessen mit dem Department, kurz darauf bin ich dann aber auch schon zurück ins Guesthouse. Dort eine Stunde geschlafen, heute abend ist der erste echte Tag vom Loy Krathong Festival. Große Parade am Thae Phae Gate, unglaublich schöne Skulpturen und verkleidete Menschen, ich habe über 200 Bilder gemacht, die Adresse werde ich noch im Blog veröffentlichen. Als die vorbei war, sind wir dann Richtung Fluß, haben auch jeder ein kleines Blumenboot (Krathong) gekauft und das dann fahren lassen. Dabei bin ich natürlich mit dem halben Unterschenkel im Morast stecken geblieben, ein FlipFlop musste beinahe dran glauben, aber mit Vorsicht habe ich ihn dann doch aus dem Schlick bekommen.
