in Northern Thailand there's a loop you can take. From Chiang Mai - Pai - Mae hong Son - Chiang Mai From Pai it is only 3 or so hours but it's really curvy. (not good for motion sickness) Our guide book recomended going the other way to Chiang Mai instead of back through Pai because it's only 1 hour longer but the road is much much better. We arrived in Mae Hong Son around noon. The only toursists that we could see in town were the 8 people on our bus, and a few busloads of Chinese package tourists. It's a pretty little town, we got a guesthouse on the lak. The view of the Wat (temple) across the lake is majestic. On the Thailand/Burma border, Mae Hong Son is literally in the middle of ... read more

2nd NOV : Doi Kong, Mae Hong Son The air at the top of the hill was much cooler than it was down below and the view extended out across the mountains of Myanmar (Burma) to the west. We had hitched a lift up to the mountaintop temple of Wat Doi Kong Mu with a Thai couple, who like us, were visiting to participate in festival celebrations at the temple. The celebrations were part of Loy Kratong, the "Festival of Light", and Thai visitors were sending up paper balloons beneath which hung a small cup with a candle inside. Make a wish or a prayer and send it to the Gods in a hot air balloon, that was the general idea anyway. "Look at the balloons Laurie", said Viv pointing upwards at the little trail of ... read more

Mae Hong Son was a mistake. It was the only place on the whole of my trip that I really just didn't take to. The arrival at the bus station and the subsequent walk through the town wasn't very inspiring but when I checked into a good, cheap guesthouse next to a pleasant looking lake with a good view of Mae Hong Son's main wat, things started looking up. Further exploration of the town revealed that it was all pretty much as dull and dirty as I initially feared, and that the town's inhabitants were really not very friendly. I just didn't feel very welcome. The only real reason for visiting Mae Hong Son is a controversial one - to visit the nearby Karen tribes originally from Bhurma and commonly referred to as the "long neck ... read more

It was a misty trail from Pai, over the mountains which led to yet another picturesque valley: Mae Hong Son. It was small and there appeared to be few tourists and I was met by a torrential downpour. Rain was not the only circumstance that kept me indoors for I was plagued with the most extreme gastro and was glued to the toilet for days. I couldn't eat nor sleep for the constant trips to the loo. I ran out of water but could barely move and was completely parched. It was a virus unaffected by immodium and maxolon and only began to slowly improve once I was able to get some antibiotics. I was determined, however, to get out and see the town and eventually managed to do so for short periods of time. ... read more

From March 18th We arrived this afternoon at the clinic by a tuk tuk, there called that because that is what they sound like "tuk ...tuk.....tuk.tuktuktutututu" What it is, is a motorcycle with a small four seater canopy pick up like bed on the back. Anyways the clinic was huge! As we walked in we met a man from PBS news from the states doing a report on the burma crisis and the clinic. He was shocked but what he has been reporting on and is ready to publicize it to the Unites States. He says its about time we heard about this. The women who founded the clinic and currently runs it, Cynthia, is seen as the mother Theresa of Burma. She has donated her life to her fellow burmese and has trained fellow burma ... read more

Ok Ok So after being in Pai for a while and basically creating my own little home away from home, I felt like I needed a little break. I packed my small backpack with the essentials grabbed my honda 125cc motor scooter and headed the 108 Kilmoteres North To Mah Hong Son. My back was so sore from the 3 hour ride that all I could do was get a room and fall asleep. Randomly bumped into this Canadian guy that i had met at a bar in Chang Mai. He's trying to go do medical Aid in Burma, but to bring medicine into Burma you have to sneak across the border and he and some other volunteers were caught by some guy with and AK-47 and kindly escorted back. The next day I woke up ... read more

Hello to everyone. It has been awhile since we have been able to get to a computer for a length of time. Our journey in the Mae Hong Son District has been an unbeilevable quest. We spent a night in Mae Sariang then jouneyed North to Mae Hong Son where we stayed at the Fern Resort, what a spectacular place, lots of trails and outdoor activities to say the least, got lost a few times in the backwoods but was able to follow the sent of hippie oil and incense and get back to the resort, much fun. We then moved onto Soppong and hung out at the Cave Lodge a couple of night exploring the caves and visiting the hill tribes, and of course lying around in hammocks drinking cold beer in the late afternoons. ... read more

Our last entry was made on Dec 20. We spent time in Mae Hong Son from Dec 21 to Dec 25. On Dec 20, we relaxed in Mae Sariang and tried to go to the hotsprings, but did not succeed. On Dec 21, we travelled from Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son. It took 4 hours and 90B (Just over US$2 each). The bus was not too full. From the bus station, it is less than1 KM walk to Mae Hong Son guest house. Phyllis complained as Gary refused to pay 40B each for a tuk-tuk to take us there. The guesthouse cost 150B for one night, bueatiful garden, with shared bath and no sound insulation in the thin wooden panels between rooms. At dinner time, we strolled around and found a food stall that served ... read more
