September 12th, 2006 So three of us head up to the mountains on the Loas border after a fantastic western breakfast. After a treck in the back of a truck through fantastic scenery and sudden sharp swerves past trees growing out of the middle of the road! We arrived at our Luxury, shiny Alpine Lodge and think we are in heaven! With quite an appetite we went out to the local restaurant about 9 pm only to discover everything is closed! We asked the Thai receptionist to open the shop and after he tried to wake some people up to do so we realised this was going to far!! They’re really so hospitibal here. So we spent a rather ravenous evening in, chewing on paper and playing paper, scissors, stone after a Valium to numb the ... read more

OK - Now this is real Thailand - Ban Pon (nor it's province Kalasin) isn't even covered in the Lonely Planet - and I was the only farang in the village. We (Tao, Aiew, and I) arrived in the wee hours of Monday morning - the bus dropped us off just after 3am. We wandered through the dimly lit village, deserted except for the dogs, to Tao's family house. Tao's mother opened the door for us, led us upstairs, set out the reed mats and mattresses out on the floor for us and we settled down to sleep - only to be awoken at 5:30 am by temple music blasted throughout the villlage on loudspeakers. I guess this is the wake-up call for all the farmers in the community - the roosters started shortly thereafter. Ban ... read more

From Bon Pan, I travelled to Khon Kaen, about 150 km west. Khon Kaen is a city of about 150,000 and I was hoping to be able to arrange a flight to Chiang Mai from here. My intention was not to stay very long. However, I arrived on a Sunday afternoon and the travel agency was not open until Monday, so I booked into a hotel for the Sunday night and the Monday night. I went to the travel agency MOnday morning to find that there are no flights directly to Chiang Mai. I would have to fly back to Bangkok and then up to CHiang Mai from there. It would cost 5,000 B and take 5 hours. THis seemed like a bit of a waste to me, so I went to check out the bus ... read more

Still out of it from jet lag and constipated from the new food, I started my Laos trip incoherent and unstable. On my third or fourth day (I'm not sure); I found the USAC students from the summer program on the fourth floor and went to lunch with them. Afterwards, on the walk back to our apartment they were asking about my plans and I started to tell them that I was meeting up with my buddy Austin in Vientiane on Monday afternoon and that I was probably taking the Sunday evening train. Then they asked me if I was leaving that night. This in my mind made no sense until they told me that it was Sunday! The whole time I was thinking it was Saturday. So I quickly had to go back to my ... read more

Three weeks have amazingly flown by since my last entry. I moved from Nong Khai to Ho Kham village on the first of July and have been here since. Ho Kham village is about 110 kilometers from Nong Khai and is a medium size village. I have been Staying with the Pee family at their home only 5 minutes walk from the school. LIVING in Ho Kham for three weeks I feel like I understand Thai culture and life style more than Korea’s, despite the fact I spent 5 months living there. Village life was simple to me at first. I met the smiling faces of the children at class and joined them in games of volleyball when we finished. I tutored children and toured the countryside with my host family. I met kind hearted families ... read more

A refund? Never... As I was walking around the streets of Vientienne I happened to pass the travel agent who had sold me a VIP priced ticket for a local bus. I couldnt resist going in to say something, even though I knew it could do no good. No-one believes in service in this corner of the globe, so whos going to care about a few dollars for a random tourist. Well how wrong could I have been! I got a sincere apology and a refund of the difference. This must be a 1 in a Million! The last supper For my last meal in Laos I decided to have Laap one last time, so went to a suitably lao looking restaurant. How wrong could I be? This place didnt serve sticky rice. Now those who ... read more

I was surprised to find out the first Friday that we had a four day weekend. It was Buddhist lent and the school was in Chaos getting ready for the ceremony that would take place after school. We walked around the entire village with several huge candles in the back of pickup trucks. We then all went to the temple for chanting and prayer. Here the monks splashed water on the kids as they went by after the ceremony. The next day I stayed in Nong Khai. There were a few things I needed, including a break. I came to find that they also had a large candle festival. I went with Nic (Thai) and Juan (Columbian. It is more a festival of Thai women and Lady Boys (men who dress as women is openly accepted ... read more

Yesterday for the first time, I lost my "mai bpen rai" attitude -- the attitude that allows the Thais to be calm and cool about everything and never ever to show anger or irritation or anything other than happiness on their faces. Up until yesterday I have been so good! When they tell me things at the last minute, or we are late for something, or we don't do something we planned to do, or ANYTHING, really, I have just smiled and accepted it. But since I am leaving the school on Wednesday, I had started going into "intense-planning" mode and so by noon yesterday I had planned out every minute of my last 2 days here. Last night I was supposed to go to the market to buy gifts for the other English teachers, go ... read more

Here are some other extremely random things that just don't seem to fit into other blogs and emails! Every day at 8am and 6pm the national anthem of Thailand plays. Every radio station, store, mall, school, building anywhere... the national anthem. And when this plays, all activity stops. If you are walking up the stairs, you stop mid-step until the anthem is over. Conversations pause in mid-sentence. It is amazing. I have finally figured out how not to pee on my shoes when I am using the squat toilets. A very valuable skill to have for the rest of my time in Thailand. I think the reason Isaan food doesn't accomodate vegetarians very well is that it is not very creative. To say this seems completely contrary to the way we see Thai food... so many ... read more

Wow, it has been an exhausting week! I'm not actually quite sure why, because it was a short week; Monday and Tuesday were both holidays for the Wax Festival. Maybe I'm just making excuses for not having written in over a week, but I really was tired! I'm also getting addicted to iced green tea... it is sooooo good and there are so many different flavours and if you drink it right after lunch, it has the power to keep you awake all afternoon through the hot hot sun. So I'll start back at this weekend... the Wax festival is a big event centred in Ubon Ratchathani where people make huge semi-truck sized carvings out of different coloured wax and then display them in the street for people to look at. Normally it would have been ... read more
