Not a good start, Liam and Isabella look like death. We leave them in bed and go and get breakfast and US$ for Lao Visa's. US$30 each for a visa. Six banks later we finally get some US$. Breakfast isn't that easy here. Corry and Harry want something plain, got some Rambutan and bread rolls. We got back and there wasn't much improvement. Harry was really sick for 12 hours, and then another 36 very average, unable to eat or drink much. We decided to check out and go to Mutmee, and wait to see if they got better. They are so hospitable there. The healthy ones had some lunch, and at about 2.00 we decided to leave for Vientiane. Once we crossed the border Isabella said she couldn't travel any further. This is not good, ... read more

In the morning Harry was a bit better, but after trying to drink was off again. We decided we could not move on today with him so unwell, so dropped the washing off (you are locked in for the day once the washing is being done). Our guesthouse is a bit average so we went back down to Mutmee which has a lovely garden, hammocks, and sun lounges and lazed around for a while. It looks out at the Meekong, and I cannot look at the Meekong without thinking of David Taylor. Harry was much improved later in the morning so we went for a walk through town and the markets. Not a lot else to do here, a fairly quiet place. Corry wanted to try some local Mekong fish, so we had lunch, grilled fish, ... read more

The train leaves from Khon Kaen at 9.30 which is quite civilised. We got a bus out there and they didn't try to rip us off for a change. Got some breakfast at the market near the train station (Bangkok Noi was better). Into the trip, and Harry started vomiting, by the time we got there he was really sick. We went to the place recommended in Lonely planet and they were booked out. They recommended another, we took it, but it was really average again. The plan was spend then day and night in Nong Khai, then cross the river to Laos next day, spend the day in Vientiane and overnight bus to Luang Prabang. We had to stay with Harry, so Dad and kids went for a walk, then mum and dad. We had ... read more

Aaaaaaargh! Can I swear? Please? No? Well alright, but I very, very much want to right now. Have been sitting here trying to catch up with this blog (how on earth did I get so far behind?) and the blasted computer has just gone and erased my one remaining memory card. I'll say it again - Aaaargh! Now I have no photo's at all from the last 3 months, not a single blimmin one! Of course, there's a lesson in there somewhere but am darned if I'm in the mood to learn it right now. Hindsight is not a wonderful thing, it's a snide and smug little devil and I'm chosing to ignore it until I'm less cross. Anyway, small rant over I shall try to continue the blog in a reasonable fashion. So, having departed ... read more

Day 11 - Nong Khai Today was a recovery day so there is not much to report on......We did not do much apart from making our way to Bangkok. We travelled 4 hours in the back of a ute (it was covered with a canopy and had dodgy bench seats) from Vang Vieng to Vientiane. From Vientiane we caught the bus to Nong Khai (Thai border). There was a monk in front of us in the immigration line. He held the line up for about 15 minutes until they asked him to step aside. They took him away to somewhere inside. Maybe he was just trying to disguise himself as a monk...................No idea what he did but this was the highlight of the day. At Nong Khai we got onto the train to Bangkok. It was ... read more

Nong Khai is a great little town along the Mekong River. It was voted 7th best city to live (or retire in) in the World. The main attraction is the Mekong River, which was where I stayed along. At Mut Mee Guesthouse. A lovely place where I met 3 Germans who I traveled with for a bit after leaving. I arrived really early in morning via my overnight (party looking) bus from Bangkok and wondered into the quiet town. Other than the river there is a Buddha Park which consists of statues created by a guy who says he fell down a hole where he met a hermit who taught him a number of things. The statues in the park are a mixture of secular, Buddhist, and Hindu pieces. This is his second park, the first ... read more

I went to Thailand to volunteer for OpenmindProjects. To go volunteering, you have to paye a Fee to cover the charges for the 3 Training Days and for your accomodation during your stay. Well you paye this fee and for allmost everything you do during the Cross Culture Training, you have to paye by your self. During my stay i had so many extra cost... they just don't informe you proprely on what kind of cost are coming up to you. Then at the Placement in the south, i had a room far away from the centre, and far away from the school... Yes and Room i had, i had to share it with an other volunteer, but not only the room, we had just one bed. Yes and in the room we had no fridge.... ... read more

As promised, I am updating my blog from Vientianne (pronounced Weing Chien). The internet here doesn’t seem to like my blog much, so I hope you can read this! The first day in Nong Khai was spent enjoying the views from the Mut Mee terrace, looking across the Meakong River. The next day was a bit more action packed, with a surprisingly long cycle to the sculpture park in Nong Khai, which is truly bizarre. Sculptures, standing 7 storeys high look over the park, dwarfing visitors. They are all of a religious nature, drawing inspiration from both Buddhist and Hindu religions, and really are quite an impressive site, as you can see from the above picture. In addition, we decided to visit a small building near the centre of the park. We wandered around this building, ... read more
