Cham's House
Afternoon at the pool 31.12.2012
Suksanwanpimai!! (Happy New Year)
It's New Year's Eve and we are sitting by the pool sipping mango and coconut shakes in the shade of an orange umbrella. We've just come off the beautiful Khlong Hin beach where we've been swimming, playing frisbee, and generally relaxing since after breakfast. Are we really the luckiest people in the world right now? Yes!! The feeling is Sabai Sabai.
We decided to spoil ourselves with three nights, to include New Years Eve, here at Cham's House. (Couldn't face the vodka fuelled techno pounding revelry expected at the lower budget Russian oriented resorts). Cham's House is currently under construction, and though surreptitious, they are willing to do good deals for this period, as they are still snagging and training to become the 4.5 star resort they are claiming to be. I think they are on track to becoming the best resort on Koh Kut. They have a fantastic location on one of the best beaches surrounded by jungle, which is something that the competition don't offer. Shantaa has no beach to speak of and no pool, and Soneva Kiri's beach is so far from the resort that you have to take a
cart to get there. There are no other contenders for top dog here.
It's a good thing we're getting to experience Cham's House now, because once they are up and running properly we won't be able to afford to stay here. Andrew did some really good negotiating and got us almost 50% off the going rate. Bargain at £261.00 per night. Fortunately I'm still collecting a full salary this month!
Cham's is named for the old Cham refugee village on the island and reflects Cham culture in the design. The organic shapes and natural materials used in the buildings work well in the environment and the huge stone outdoor bath tubs in each room are a fun touch. Some of the bungalows have private pools, but we missed getting one of these as we took too long to make up our minds about taking the plunge and staying here. You see, we are a little bit sensible...
Tonight Cham's is putting on a gala New Year's Eve event for us. Can't think of anything worse but the staff are so excited that I'm sure it will rub off on us. We will have a dinner on the
beach with a Thai star for entertainment as well as a performance by children from the local school. Before we checked in Andrew said to me: "do you think they will have a compulsory New Years event like the other resorts have?" I said confidently: " No! You can't tell rich people what to do!" But evidently you can and we have been forced to pay a small fortune worth at least two months worth of standard Thai restaurant meals for this privilege . Fingers crossed for good Thai food at least.
But, how dare I complain!?! Everything else in the last three weeks has been great; including the awesome storm we had in the middle of last night. We are on our 23rd perfectly sunshiny day in a row and are both happier than we have been in a very long time! The islands have done their job and relaxed and prepared us for the next leg of our adventure. Tomorrow we leave and go back to Bangkok for four nights with golden tans and fading insect bites. We have quite a bit to accomplish before leaving for Burma on Saturday morning, including sorting out the technology and
stocking up on some toughness - Burma promises to be a bit of a bumpy ride. But for now..... Sabai Sabai.
