Tuesday, November 4, 2008 School is going well so far, and although there are and will be challenges, I think I have landed in a pretty sweet deal. I am teaching science grades 1-6 and I have one section of kindergarten math (with just 3 little students!). It is a very interesting setup, more like an American university model in that I see each class 2 times a week, except for 1 student in grade 4 and one in grade 6, brothers, whose parents pay for them to have individual instruction in EVERY subject every day (!), so I teach/tutor them both separately in science every day. I usually teach just 4 classes a day and so I have 2 plan periods plus over and hour lunch every day, except on Thursdays I teach all 6 ... read more

On Sunday I visited the closest local beach, called Bang Saen, which I have found out is where two of the other foreign teachers at my school actually live. The day started off auspiciously when I couldn’t figure out how to open the door to get out of my building. The doors had always been ajar before, even though I have 2 separate swipe cards, one for each entrance. I had to wait until someone else came down to figure out which button I had to press to be let out of the building. Embarrassing, except that I am starting to get pretty good at and comfortable with the role of clueless "farang" (foreigner). Once out on the street I started to walk to the main road, thinking that I would be able to figure out ... read more

Yesterday (Saturday) I worked on my little neighborhood map again, finding my way back to the mall. This time I went to the Hot Pot chain restaurant (at least it’s Asian, right?) Hot pot for one is kind of sad, like going to a fondue restaurant alone. Each table in the restaurant has a huge electric pot of boiling water in the middle of the table and you order the things you want to boil up in there. I got lots of different veggies (including morning glory leaves and bok choy and my recent favorite flavor sensation—baby corn) and rice vermicelli. It was pretty yummy, but I could only eat so much of it and I still felt like I needed something substantial afterwards. So I went for the oh-so-substantial glazed donut from Dunkin Donuts. Incorrigible! ... read more

Last night I came home to quite the menagerie of critters in my room. Greeting me just inside the door was a serious contender for the World’s Largest Cockroach competition and this roach was also seriously feisty and did not want to leave the confines of my apt. or, after I had scooped him up, my shoe, either! Next there was the usual parade of ants all along the walls in the bedroom and bathroom, as well as the bathroom sink. Not awesome, but at least they kept a pleasant distance from my toothbrush. I got in the shower (and by “get in the shower,” I actually mean turned on the showerhead, since the squat-y potty, sink and shower are one unit) just to rinse off in order to cool down and was surprised by a ... read more

Received word yesterday that Vinny has gotten her ticket and will be in Thailand from December 26-January 5! I am hoping to have some time off in there and at least we can find something interesting to do for New Year’s, maybe with some others from the TEFL group or if not, a party of 2 somewhere. Tried on my new black pants today with my pink King shirt (Tuesday’s uniform). Today or tomorrow I still need to get a yellow King shirt for Monday’s uniform. Here's the story with the King shirts: The much loved current King was born on a Monday and the color associated with Monday is yellow. Therefore lots of people wear yellow shirts, especially King shirts (with royal insignia) on Mondays, but it is perfectly acceptable to wear them any day ... read more

Well, I’ve finished the first piece of this journey and am now into the second phase. I am somewhat nervous about what lies ahead and setting off “on my own,” separate from the group that became very familiar in just a few brief weeks, but I am mostly excited to begin teaching. Teaching English is, after all, what brought me here, though it is somehow very easy to lose sight of that with all of the other adventures I have been experiencing here. If this past month were the entire experience, I would be satisfied, but I am really looking forward to this next adventure, too. Joy and Tao picked me up this morning at Condochain for the trip up to Chonburi (about 1.5-2 hours toward Bangkok). It was another rainy, dreary morning, though not ... read more

Just made it home from exploring the city a bit. Got completely and utterly lost, despite the best of intentions. Realizing that in the excitement of all that had happened today, I forgot to ask Joy to write down the name of my apt. building and/or at least the name of the street it’s on (everything I have seen has only been in Thai writing, but even so I thought maybe I should at least copy that down. Should have!!), I decided I better draw myself a little map and keep track of where I went so that I would be able to retrace my steps. I started off well- made my way back to the school easily enough and decided to explore further from there. I guess I got sidetracked by hunger and errands (or ... read more

In May 2005 I spent twelve days meditating at Wat Bhaddanta Asabharam in Chonburi Province, Thailand. Within an hour of my barely announced arrival at the centre I had received the eight precepts from Sorado Bikhu, as well as basic instruction in Mahasi meditation technique and the advice: “Don’t be too serious about it!” This Wat and its meditation centre were established by Ajahn Bhaddanta Asabha, aka Chonburi Sayadaw. He was a Burmese sayadaw, sent by Mahasi Sayadaw to teach sattipatana vipassana meditation in Thailand. My teacher, Ajahn Somsak Sorado, was one of his students. He is Thai and, having spent a couple of years in the USA, has sufficient English to teach foreigners. There seemed to be about 25 monks and 10 nuns living in the Wat, thirteen dogs and a number of cats: as ... read more

House blessing K's mom got up at 5 am. I decided to ignore it and go back to sleep until someone would ask me to get my ass out of bed - which was unfortunately only one hour later ;) I got up and had a shower. Compared to what I had experienced during the past three weeks, this bathroom and shower were pure luxury. I enjoyed every second I spent underneath this warm water shower. I wanted to help with the final preparations but no one had anything for me to do and I was told to sit on the couch and wait. I had no idea what this house blessing ceremony was going to look like so I just sat on the veranda and watched the others eagerly preparing the buffet and other things. ... read more

House blessing Still no idea when Karl was going to get here. At this point I didn't care because it was weekend. K was off work and invited me to join him and his family on a trip to his sister’s house blessing ceremony in Chon Buri. Yesterday I had to check out at noon and since I was only going to meet K in the evening, I spent the afternoon on the bench in front of my back packer and tried to read. I have to mention that it was really really hot and therefore extremely hard to concentrate. At some point an Australian girl joined me and we started a conversation. It was good to talk to another traveller and exchange experiences. K and I met in the city. It's incredible how much I ... read more
