I can read! Well, a few words, anyway. It was a very exciting day for me (Sunday), when I realized I could read the words Sri Racha, Chonburi, elephant, and some others. Now I need to work on my vocabulary because it isn’t that helpful to be able to sound out all these words if I don’t know what they mean! I have been working on learning the Thai alphabet, a little bit each day for a few weeks now, well really since I arrived in Thailand, but more studiously since I got to Chonburi. I have the consonants pretty much memorized (names and sounds), and most of the vowels, and Spice and Porsche tested me today using my tiny flashcards. The next step, though, is production, which I need to work on. The letters are ... read more

I sometimes have trouble keeping things simple. When I decide I want to do something, especially cooking, I want to REALLY do it. If I decide I want to make a Thai meal, I want it to be at least a 4-course feast. Same with Nigerian food for book club. Then I end up spending way too long on the project and have to buy a million ingredients and it ends up being a little exhausting. But I like it. I like the exhaustion and I enjoy the effort. It’s all part of the challenge. Thanksgiving is my newest challenge. Because of course it’s not just Thanksgiving as usual. It’s Thanksgiving in Thailand—where I have to hunt down and/or be creative about ingredients, cook everything on one electric pan with no heat adjustment settings, and store ... read more

Despite being out of the country (again) for Thanksgiving, it was delightful! I celebrated with 4 other TEFL-ers on Saturday, my first visitors (not including my stalker/secret admirer, who was, incidentally, never heard from again), 3 days after the actual American festivities, at my aparment in Chonburi. I went to the open market by my apartment, Ban Suan Market, on Friday after school. The market here is bigger than I realized and has almost everything I need, including tofu and dry pasta. It does not, however, have peanut butter, so I will have to go elsewhere for that, but in terms of fresh goods, it is well-stocked—peanuts, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, all kinds of fruits, rice rice rice, etc. I had never arrived early enough to see it in full swing until ... read more

I am woefully under-informed about the goings on of the world and also here in Thailand. I got an IM from Kelan last night mentioning something about the newest unrest in Bangkok, of which I was completely oblivious, so he sent me a link and I got up to speed on the news from the capital. The former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra (from the People Power Party), who was beleaguered by accusations of corruption and abuse of power, was ousted from office in September of 2006. In his place currently is Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin's brother-in-la, who opponents claim is the puppet prime minister of a puppet government. There have been protests, marches, and other actions, sometimes violent, in Bangkok for some time now. I think that it has all been limited to Bangkok, anyway. But last ... read more

I had my doubts about the wisdom of combining ice cream and corn, but after trying it for the first time the other night, I am convinced. The “corn sundae” is superb! There is a thin layer of vanilla soft serve ice cream, followed by a layer of cream-corn-like sweet corn, then another more generous layer of ice cream that comes to a peak at the top, and on that layer of ice cream there is a thick moat of gooey corn that protects the ice cream peak. I’m not sure it will sell in the States, but I’m willing to give it a try . . . if Banana Hammocks® never comes to fruition, of course. ... read more

I spent this past weekend in shady, red-lit Pattaya, which is about an hour south of me (if you catch the right bus). You always hear about Pattaya—the kind of place that is almost whispered about; the kind of place you might not want to admit having gone to (according to Mike, one of our TEFL trainers). I had vowed to myself that I would not go to Pattaya, that I had seen enough “red lights” in Patpong in Bangkok. I had heard that the beach wasn’t even that great, but then again sometimes it would be nice to have a closer beach option than Ban Phe/Ko Samet and Bang Saen, as noted earlier, is not a good enough substitute in my book. Teachers Rick and Morven both confirmed that I would not like what Pattaya ... read more

I am still working on learning the students’ names. Fortunately most of the children have a short nickname and they are often interesting words in English. Here is a sample of some of my favorites at school: Sherlock, Focus, Phone, Big, Bike, Popeye (girl), Captain, Premier, Boat, Porsche, Spice, Grape, Copter, Donut, and Pooh. Donut is an absolutely adorable name for the little girl in kindergarten, but will it be as cute if she turns into a chubby pre-teen? Will the nickname Donut stay with her forever, even when she is an 80-year-old grandmother? Earth is quite a popular nickname. There are at least 3 students (all boys) at my school with that name. In the first week I barely knew any of the students’ names, which became glaringly and somewhat embarrassingly apparent during third grade ... read more

Monday’s “event” was paying to use the pool at a local hotel, but that one went off mostly without a hitch. I took my swimming things to school and walked straight to the hotel after school. The charge is 35 baht/day, which is just a little over $1.00. There were some kids in the pool that kept trying to talk to me and at least I could get a few of the basics in Thai: “What’s your name?,” “How old are you?,” “Where are you from?” That is about the extent of my knowledge, though, and then I have to rely on my most-repeated phrase: “Mai kao jai” (I don’t understand). I am still working on learning the alphabet, though, and try to study a little bit each night. Tuesday’s event was a big one, though, ... read more

My current life is made up of everyday activities that, because of being in a new city with an immense language barrier, become “events.” Each day has a new “event,” which is how I am choosing to look at things. If I successfully complete one such event (which is often an adventure, sometimes into absurdity) in a day, then I can be pleased. My Sunday night event, after arriving back from Ban Phe on the bus, was to get a membership to the local video store, so I can rent movies. The first part of the event was locating the store, but I had cased that out last week, and so that was the easy part to check off. The next part was to make sure that at least some of the DVDs at the store ... read more

Well, I have a bit of a mystery on my hands, one that I have not solved and rather think I may not get the chance to. On Thursday after school I came home and read for a little while and then settled in for a little cat nap (Thursdays are my hard day when I teach every period). I had stuff all over the room and bed (as per usual) and didn’t notice that anything seemed out of place or disturbed in any way. But when I awakened from my nap, still groggy and lethargic, my foot bumped into something that I had not brought into the room—a small bag with handles stamped with the name of a local hospital that contained two Styrofoam, plastic-wrapped packages of different kinds of unidentified sweets, and I jumped ... read more
