Yesterday Drury and I had to leave The Peninsula behind as we had to switch hotels to meet up with our tour. We had The Peninsula drive us to our new hotel called At Ease in their BMW. We found out that it was a long holiday weekend in Bangkok and the traffic throughout the city had been light all weekend. Transferring to the new hotel on Tuesday was quite an ordeal in traffic as apparently, Bangkok is the third worst traffic city in the world behind Rio and Mexico City.
We arrived at the hotel and met up with Margo and then the three of us headed out to go get foot massages again. We found a place close to the hotel and all had an excellent massage. We then met up with Margo's parents and another couple on the tour and all had dinner at a local restaurant.
This morning we met everyone on the tour at our orientation meeting. Our tour guide informed us that we had to change our schedule and we would not be touring Bangkok today but instead we would be driving about 50km outside of city to see Wat Yai Chaimongkol and
Wat Era Sri Sanphet.
Everyone boarded the bus and off we went. Bangkok is a massive city that seemed to go on forever. After an 90 minute ride we finally arrived at our first stop Wat Yai Chaimonkol. Drury and I were both excited as this was our first temple. The statues around the temple were amazing and it really was an interesting place.
We then drove to a local restaurant where we had soup, fried rice, small fried chicken wings, and a green slimy dessert that had a good taste of coconut, but it was way too slimy for me to eat. It was like eating a bowl of slimy worms. I will definitely try any type of food once, and this is one of those foods. I will only eat it one time.
We then walked around the corner from the restaurant and watched two guys make this string kind of candy that winds up being a filling in a pastry burrito and actually kind of tasted like a butter finger candy bar.
The bus picked us up and we had short drive to the ruins of Wat Era Sri Sanphet. These ruins were
apparently the first capital of Thailand or Siam and was burned to the ground by the Burmese army. The ruins was once a massive palace and temple. The three spires in our pictures were actually constructed in 1957 as they were going to try and restore part of the ruins, but wound up only creating the three spires.
We walked around the ruins and then went to a covered market area. We didn't buy anything but it was neat to walk around and see everything.
We headed back to Bangkok and traffic was a little heavier than in the morning and it took us about two hours. We are meeting our group tonight for a Thai dinner and then Drury and Margo want to go back to the same foot massage place and get another massage before heading to bed.
