What better place to end a trip than in Asia. It was and always will be my favourite destination. Hence we jumped on the opportunity to break the long trip home with three weeks of sweet FA on a beach.
The first port of call was Bangkok a city Kellie and I have been to before. The main reason for staying a few days was to shop in the massive shopping centres where everything from real Versace to fake Gucci can be found. These days they even produce fake underwear!
We also took the chance to upgrade the work wardrobe and went to a tailor to get some new suits made. This is an experience in itself as just selecting one is nerve wrecking. As usual you can trust no one and everyone claims to have the best Italian made fabric which doubtless comes from China and has never seen anything Italian before. Once we settled on ours the question of which fabric and cut needs to be settled which again is not easy if you have a couple of hundred each to choose from. A few fittings later and we walked out of the store with our new
bounty. That together with the rest of the stuff we bought was shipped home to Oz in two packets each weighting 13 kilos. Amazing how much you can buy in a few days.
We didn’t just do shopping and the first distraction was good old Khao San Road. If you never been to Bangkok then it’s hard to imagine what Khao San Road is like. The whole street is blocked off and is in short a backpackers heaven (or hell depending on your likes) full of bars, shops, street food, restaurants, hotels, hostels and fleapits. Just my place.
It was also time again to celebrate Kellies birthday and I took her out on a romantic (yep) dinner river cruise.
Once we did all our shopping we headed of to the real attraction of Thailand. The beaches. We chose Koh Lanta as it was in the general direction of Kuala Lumpur in which we had to end up and I knew it’s a nice place as I have been there before.
After a quite uncomfortable overnight “VIP” bus ride and a short ferry trip we finally arrived on this beautiful island. We ended up getting a small but
Fire show
Pretty cool huh comfortable bamboo hut with sea view. I can only recommend Koh Lanta as it is by far not as developed as some of the other Thai Islands but it still has everything you need (and if you are single and prefer blondes … it is the main island for Scandinavians in Thailand). There are great restaurants directly on the water and many bars which happily sell beer and cocktails.
Originally we wanted to stay only a few days on Koh Lanta and then go on to a more deserted Island called Koh Lipe but that never happened as we just couldn’t be bothered to move on and stayed nearly 10 days before heading on to Georgetown in Malaysia
We spend most of the days just lounging around eating papaya salad and drinking juice.
One of those days we dragged our bums of the beach and hired a scooter to explore the island. There isn’t a great deal to see but the drive alone is great and old Lanta and a relaxing afternoon nap on a beach are well worth the effort.
Needless to say that we got quite a few massages (no happy ending) and also visited
Pad Thai
Cant get it much fresher than from this lady the Islands one and only German bakery. Kellie also went to a Thai cooking class which was part of her birthday present, where she learned all the secrets of Thai cooking.
Koh Lanta is also close to some top class dive sited so we took the opportunity to do some dives. We saw the usual suspects and also some funny pipe fish, turtles and octopus.
