We jumped in the car and went on a quick roadtrip today to Ayuthaya. Ayuthaya is about 50 miles north of Bangkok. It was the ancient captial of Siam, until it was completely sacked after a 2 year battle to gain the city in 1765. The population of Ayuthaya before the battle was over a million people (which was more than the capitals of Europe during the same timeframe), after the battle there were less than 10,000 inhabitants remaining. The Burmese completely sacked the city, their goal was to make the city uninhabitable. Its a truly amazing and beautiful place. I could spend days here exploring the ruins. It truly must have been one of the great cities of the world before it was destroyed. We had lunch at a great place on the river. The ... read more

At last I've got round to telling you all about my trip to Bangkok which included a free ride their,a really good football match and a nightmare getting home.It was a typical Friday morning and getting up alway's felt more difficult then usual.Usual meaning I alway's had a hangover and didn't get up until way after 1pm.That morning I didn't have a hangover but I was really eager to get a move on,I was going to Bangkok to watch Thailand vs Real Madrid. As I got to Tony's Place(a local hangout...)I waited for Andrew who was also coming to watch the game. One of the teacher's who is also a regular offered us a lift, and to be honest we needed it as we didn't have a 'scooby' were the stadium was. After a couple of hours we ... read more

Hey, Sorry it's been so long I've been really busy teaching and trying not to drink too much.I haven't done much outside the classroom although I have had some good night's out here in Ayutthaya.I'm now looking forward to Christmas as I've booked myself on a PADI dive course in Koh Tao and then on to Koh Samui for New Year's 'it's a hard life living in the sun'.I don't feel much stress out here as I did working in the UK,I feel I can relax more and enjoy life.My relationship's have not gone well (including my lastest)but I'm not bothered. It's make's life so more enjoyable when the weather's alway's hot and sunny and the people are happy.I haven't seen a fight yet not even in the bar's so it must be a good thing. On the ... read more

We were sad to leave Lembongan, but excited to fly to Thailand to explore Bangkok and Ayutthaya. It was certainly a change of pace, but it was great experiencing the cultural history of Siam. Amazing temples, shrines, Buddha statues in the Grand Palace, Wat Po, and Wat Arun. Beautiful architecture at the Vimanek Mansion made of teakwood and the Jim Thompson House, an authentic Thai house built by an American (I know, quite ironic). We also spent a night on a dinner cruise down the Chao Praya River where a Thai she-male sang cheesy 80s songs and even some Korean classics (there were tons of Koreans on the boat...it brought new meaning to the word "FOB" for us when we finally got off). To top it off, the singer busted out the Titanic song by Celine ... read more

Hello again! Finally, we have a computer that we can upload pictures from! Attached are a few pictures from Ayutthaya. This place was really amazing. It was the capital of Siam for several hundred years, and the Burmese attacked and successfully ransacked the city. Many were killed, others tortured. Many of the Buddha images were destroyed, all of them were damaged. The destruction was quite amazing... but it also was rather amazing to think that the people of Siam suffered such great losses, yet managed to regroup, build a new capital, and succeed as a nation. More pictures coming soon! Lynne & Mark... read more

Yep, That's right i'm here for one year and kinda wondering how and why I'm doing such a job as teaching!I've decided to limit my blog to once a month as I'm working all the time and there are only a few moment's that are of interest to all the people who read my blog.(If it start's getting boring, please tell me.......)Where was I??? "Ah" yes, working here in Ayutthaya is great although I work for a language school so I have a 6 day week. The time I have off between classes and my day off I tend to get as much done as I can.I'm also trying to cut down my booze intake and do some fitness(yer right,it sound's good in my head)but getting into routine is bloody hard for a lazy bugger like me.Anyway I ... read more

My first teaching experience was a case of sink or swim!I had to fill in for one of guy's who was sick,he was teaching a class of 55 student's (around 12-14 year old's)."Oh" so I'll be teaching one class,I said?'No' I was teaching two classes.......A pin dropped and I nearly went green.I got there thinking I was going to get torn from limb to limb and stuck on the white board. When I got there it was different I felt quite good and even a little powerful standing infront of all these kids.I hammered through the first lesson getting all the student's talking even shouting English. The next one was even better with all the student's shaking my hand at the end of lesson.Although I think they were testing my grip,as the last teacher use to out-grip ... read more

Now we are traveling in the province of Ayuthaya which is about an hour and a half from Bangkok. That is a short trip unless you leave at 11:00 am from the islands and take a three hour boat ride then a 12 hour train ride plus another hour and a half train ride just to get there. On our first day we stumbled upon a weekend market. It was small but had a lot of neat stuff. The food was especially strange, we tried a green drink with some sort of jelly worm in it. It tasted like coconut milk, but with sugar added to it. I did not really like it, too sweet for me, but it seemed very popluar with the locals. We are staying in a quiet part of town where we ... read more

Hi again, Just thought i'd write another entry to tell people about my TEFL time on Koh Samui. The course it's self is well thought out with lot's of time to do planning of lessons and complete the task's set by the tutor "Phil Jenkin's".The best part of the course for me was the teaching practice. The grammar and phonetic's were a struggle for me but with the help of my fellow student's and tutor I got through it without a scratch. The only moan I have are the course book's,there are 6 of them and most are very hard to understand. In all it was a great experience doing the TEFL on Koh Samui, the student's you work with are great and the teacher's you meet are alway's willing to give you sound advise.Thank's to Phil and Stuart and ... read more

Greetings from Ayutthaya, After leaving Koh Samui with a sense of relief i headed of to Ayutthaya with my fellow TEFL teacher Ken May.Ken being a former resident and teacher in the old capital made me feel alot better about getting there in one piece. And after a short flight and a couple of bus changes of which i wouldn't of made if i was on my own(I'd have probably ended up in back-end of nowhere.)We reached Ayuttahya and as luck would have it,it rained just as we got of the bus and this was no shower it was monsoon rain.As we dashed through it I said to Ken "Now i know what a drowned rat feels like".I eventually arrived at my guest house an ex-pat hangout known as MM (don't ask why!).That afternoon i went ... read more
