one of the many temples we visited Now we are traveling in the province of Ayuthaya which is about an hour and a half from Bangkok. That is a short trip unless you leave at 11:00 am from the islands and take a three hour boat ride then a 12 hour train ride plus another hour and a half train ride just to get there.
On our first day we stumbled upon a weekend market. It was small but had a lot of neat stuff. The food was especially strange, we tried a green drink with some sort of jelly worm in it. It tasted like coconut milk, but with sugar added to it. I did not really like it, too sweet for me, but it seemed very popluar with the locals.
We are staying in a quiet part of town where we are the only westerners. Our hotel is near a university and yesterday we had lunch at a mess hall of sorts. It was ok food, but we were the only white people there. We got a lot of stares. The students seemed generally intrigued with us.
Yesterday we toured the ruins of the city, which is what it is known for. This
us
us and some ruins was once the capital of Siam, like the cats, now Thailand. We hired a driver for the day, and he and his son drove us to the ruins. These ruins were impressive...... well at first at least. After a while we saw more Buddhas than we thought existed, thousands. We noticed that the larger and more expensive Buddhas seemed to draw more of a crowd than the small or older Buddhas. We prefer the less flashy statues.
And to wrap up the day we ate some weird egg and dough items, with scallions sprinkled on top. Durian ice-cream has quite an interesting taste, I did not find it to my liking. Many street vendors sell this fruit, to me it seems like they normally eat them alone. This fruit also has a very strong and unappitising smell.
Seaweed biscuits do not taste good either!
Today I Jonathan woke up with a slight cold and fever so it kinda put a damper on our activities. We did however manage to visit some markets, take pictures with elephants, and tour the city by boat. The boat ride was very interesting, we witnessed Thai bathing practices. While on the boat
zara's hike
to the top of the wat tour we notices many people bathing in the river, this seems like a common activity. Many children were playing in the water and adults were washing themselves on the shore.
Till Next Time.
One final interesting fact, here in Thailand it is the year 2548 so technically Zara and I have time traveled 543 years into the future.
