Ah Island life....
Zara and I stayed on a small island just north of Koh Samui called Koh Phangan for 4 nights. This was the most laid back part of our trip so far. Our bungalow was directly next to the ocean, so close that when the tide came in at night it was practically at our door step. We opted for the non air con room. With fans and a sea breeze it was pleasant. The only action we saw during these four days was when we rented a moped (motor bike if you’re British) and explored the island. It was quite the experience scooting along rolling hills only wide enough for one car and a motor bike. The rest of the time we enjoyed the beautiful view of our private beach and read some of The Chronicles of Narnia.

Now if you consider that this is a small island that receives all of its supplies from the mainland, about two hours away by boat, or from the larger island Koh Samui, you would not find it strange that gas is sold in glass liter bottles. In order to buy gas you pull up to an old woman

and point to the strange vials that are connected to a large barrel of gas that probably just floated up from the main land and say "Fill". Also since the island is so small electricity went off nightly. Luckily for us it was only for an hour or two at a time.

We also met a nice restaurant owner that had a sort of small zoo in her backyard. This included rabbits, dogs, chickens, and a pet gibbon a.k.a. monkey. Now this gibbon was female and she was attracted to men, be they human or gibbon. When a female came with a man the gibbon was jealous of the female and would make faces at her and attack the cage. Very interesting. So Zara had to stand away while I got to pet the gibbon.

Till next time.
