Do you know how long I have waited to have an excuse to use that as a subject line? Too long. Too long. My visa woes have followed me to Japan. After having to do the crazy 24 hour visa run from Korea to Japan about 9 months ago, my company in Japan told me they could not process my work visa before my toursit visa expired, so I had to leave the country. For regular readers, you can probably guess there was no way I was going back to Korea. My company gave me very little notice, so Jen and I scrambled to book a weekend trip together, but we just couldn't make it work due to her work schedule. So I decided to head to Taiwan alone boo-hoo. The short version goes like this: ... read more

Wednesday 19th May – Taipei – Hualien Our train leaves Taipei at 1030am, so we arrived at the station at 915am to ensure we didn’t miss our train. The scenery on this three-hour journey was lovely, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Taiwan’s mountainous interior on the other. We arrived at Hualien just before 2pm and were whisked away by a very happy taxi driver, who took us to the Dashhin Hotel for NT105 ($5). The hotel is fine, we have a double bed and a multi coloured bath that looks like it is made of a thousand guitar plectrums. It cost NT600 ($25) a night and has a small menagerie consisting of three cats and one yappy dog. After checking in we went to the Hualien Travel Service to arrange a tour for ... read more

Thursday 13th May – Hong Kong – Taipei Tony said when he awoke he could quite easily stay in bed, considering how our day turned out this may have been the best thing to do! We left the Dragon Hostel just after 10am for Hong Kong Airport, our flight was at 1.10pm, but we had a couple of trains to catch etc. Caught the Metro to Central HK11 ($2.40) and then had to transfer to the Airport Express Train HK75 ($16) which took about half an hour. Once at the airport, it didn’t take long to find the Cathay Pacific counter, which is where our troubles began. “You can’t enter Taiwan without an ongoing (exit) ticket”. We explained that when we got to Taipei we were going to buy a ferry ticket to Okinawa, this, however ... read more

Saturday May 1st Lhasa – Chengdu I woke early as the taxi to the airport is coming at 730am. It was another restless night’s sleep for me, I woke in the wee hours and had trouble breathing, nose all stuffed up I look forward to our return to a lower altitude and fewer red corpuscles! The taxi arrived at 715am but we were ready, Tony was concerned as there were two men were in the taxi, one of the golden rules of travelling is to never get in a cab with someone other than the driver, as the hotel had arranged this cab, we hoped it would be okay. It turned out fine, especially as the other guy slept all the way. It was a beautiful morning in Tibet, blue skies everywhere that seemed to bounce ... read more

Sleeping in another morning before packing my things and checking out. I go out to grab a quick bite before meeting Judy around noon. She is also packed and ready to accompany me to Taipei for a few days. We get the tickets at a small Free Go Bus office, their green buses being painted with big dalmatians, an amusing case of Greyhound ripoff. It turns out the sevice is not as express as last time, making a few stops along the way, but it is a daylight trip and much more interesting. We finally arrive at Taipei main railway sation sometime after four pm in a chaotic mess of traffic and bad air. I'm happy to have some local expertise to help me navigate the confusion. We go to check in our bags at the ... read more

After a good night's rest I wake up to find that my face is in shreds. The Thai colour is obviously coming off fast. Judy picks me up for lunch before we go out for some sightseeing on foot, the streets filled with little kids in school uniforms rushing for home. We walk both large avenues lined with shopping malls, banks and office towers and narrow streets full of little shops and residences. The traffic goes from being nearly non existent to chaotic. Taiwan is definietly scooter territory, everywhere the sidewalks are cluttered with parked rides and colourful helmets. This is also the first time I have come across a pink shop dedicated to that Hello Kitty craze. I try not to think too much about the fact that a 3.5 magnitute tremor was apparently felt ... read more

Depends on who you are really. While Kay is returning to reality I will continue with a jump to the next location. The old man picks us up at the hotel at 6.30 and we're on our way to the airport after having been delayed 25 minutes due to some amazingly poor performance by the checkout clerk. My eye still looks a bit weird but I don't have any problems using it anymore. I had a really good time in Thailand and feel a bit sad to press on with my itinerary, but the mission must go on. After saying our goodbyes at Don Muang airport I head back inside to do some plane spotting before boarding my flight to Taipei. As I get on board the KLM Asia 747 I'm surprised to learn that I ... read more

My second stint as an ESL teacher landed me in Taiwan. I was convinced to make a trip to this land of many wonders by a friend of mine that I taught with in South Korea. So, I hopped a flight in August 2003 and headed to Yuanlin to meet up with Jeno. Jeno and I have some crazy stories to share, but I'll save some of those for my small South Korea blog. When I arrived, I was completely awake and so we decided to drop my bags at Jeno's place and go grab a bite to eat. This was my first experience on a scooter and let me tell you...........I never thought I'd get back on! Jeno was a great driver, maybe a little bit too "local" for me already, lol. Jeno helped me ... read more

My own travel adventures began March 2003, when I took to the skies, in the footsteps of my older sister and traveled to Taiwan. Belinda was working there with her then husband (Sven lol) as a teacher at a kindergarten. I had decided to move there too, on the same notion of being a teacher (yes, I would be responsible for small children!). It was pretty much a disaster right from the get-go. Belinda had flown to Taiwan easily on a one-way ticket, with the premise of getting a work visa when she arrived. I had tried the very same thing, but unfortunately in my case, they weren't having any of it. Arriving at the airport, in the early hours of the morning, only to be turned away for not having a return ticket or some ... read more
