Taipei, Taiwan! (the airport anyway) Asia » Taiwan » Taipei » CKS International Airport By nnilJanuary 27th 2007Linny Finally arrived into Taiwan at 447am. As soon as we got off the plane, we had to wait in line to do another security check. We walked over to boarding gate, dumped the stuff with mom and then I wandered around taking photos of random stuff. Had to wait almost two hours til the stores finally opened. Everything was priced in Taiwanese Dollars so everything looked really expensive even though it probably wasn't. The electronics were the best! Every possible gadgety gadget was available and looke... read more

Yes!!! We landed in Taipei. Considering we just flew about 14 hours, it’s terrific how neither one of us is feeling it right now. Just to be safe, in case there’s any lingering anti-US sentiment, David wore bright red shoes and a bright red shirt with a white pullover over it…basically he looked like a giant walking Canadian flag! He also carried around (and actually read) Frank Rich’s The Greatest Story Ever Sold just in case anyone was looking for safe non-political conversation topics (insert message here.) Hopefully the Thai people will continue to think we’re just retarded…and not American. On our flight in, we stayed up just long enough to have a surprisingly good dinner (Billy wishes he had gotten David’s vegetarian Indian dishes ) and dozed off for what felt only like 2 hours, ... read more

OT and I arrived to Taipei, Taiwan in some 13-14 hours... I slept the first 6 hours thanks to the two vodka grapefruits at LAX, and the 2 or 3 melatonins taken when we first boarded the plane. I woke to catch the second half of X-Men III. The Tawainese woman in the middle seat between us was a real doll when, as I was sleeping, I cupped her head with my hand and she didn't say a word, although she did cough a lot. We were really beat and had to stay on our feet for our three hour layover. Once we realized that airport prices are pricey worldwide, even the electronics were over the top, we decided it had to be five o'clock somewhere and it was time for a beer. OT really wanted ... read more

There isn't much to be said to sum up an overnight flight to Taipei except.....UGHH. All I definitely can recommend to anyone flying EVA Airlines is no matter how cheap the flight may be it definitely pays to get the upgrade to their Evergreen Deluxe Class. Although I must say our flight was pretty painless “well… the Ambien really helps with that” when we actually boarded the plane and saw that there were no screens on the back of the seats and just a shared monitor for each section we were both a bit frightened. Excellent we get to try and learn Taiwanese while watching their blockbuster movies for 13 hours…FUN. It really wasn’t that horrible, they were actually English movies with subtitles so we got the better end of that deal. I powered through “Hoot” ... read more

When you are leaving a lovely place, you always have a lot to say about this place. So did I. I definitely had a fantastic holiday in Taiwan. This is the place that I would recommend you to come. Let me say something good about Taiwan ok? 1. First of all, I would rate Taiwanese are generally very friendly and welcome foreigners to their country. They are actually proud to show off their country to other people. Everytime I ask for directions, I get very friendly respone, unlike many places I went I get 'I don't know or I don't speak English!' respones. You know where I'm talking about right? LOL. Sometimes you don't understand the menu or the sign board, you asked, they will try their very best to explain to you. Not like the ... read more

My flight landed in Taipei this morning at about 7:15 am. It was great getting my first glimpse of Taiwan from the air-awesome to be back. It was much quicker getting my bags, visa and money exchanged this year. I then quickly found the bus into town and off we went. All I could think was, "I'm back baby, I'm back!" Once I got dropped off at Taipei Main Station I found a phone and called John Lee-the manager of the Happy Family Hostel. I lugged my bags about 2 blocks and got checked in. My room was only NT$7500 for the whole month, plus the deposit. Great deal at only US$279. So after I checked in I headed out so John could prepare my room. I got an o.j. at the Circle K, then went ... read more

It was Lunar New Year- January 28, 2006! I was off to Taiwan -Taipei on my own. I knew Holly from Markham ONtario was teaching near Taipei because I had been talking to her when I was thinking about teaching there. We had planned to meet at least one day. SHe booked me a cheap hotel. The QUEEN hotel and they spoke NO English! haha. Thami was staying at the Grand Hotel about 15 minutes across town. I tried to use the phone to call them both it took a long time to figure out!!!!!! GRRR. I met Thami for a late lunch at his nice hotel. Then we went touring around the city to see some temples. We were anxious to explore the night life as well but it was quite because of Chinese New ... read more

Chiang Kai Sek airport, Taipei. I am in a lay over to go to Jakarta to attend my sister's wedding. I took off from Des Moines, transiting in Dallas, Los Angeles, and of course, Taipei. This two week journey will be an interesting one: one week of Thanksgiving break and another week of break extension. I am a little bit worried about the weather change and expecially the reversed culture shock I might experience by having living in the States for so long. But of course, the highlight is my sister and her future husband and my future brother-in-law, Julius. They are highschool sweethearts, and have been dating for nine years now, even though for four years they lived apart in two different cities for college. ... read more
