One last adventure before we begin our journey home is a train trip to the Hill Country. It consists of a 6 hour journey and a 13 degree difference in temperature. We go to the station for our 9.45 train. The rolling stock looks like it belongs in a museum. However, at 9.46 a whistle blows, and we’re off. One minute behind schedule – how often can Southern Rail manage that? We have tickets in Observation Class, which is supposed to offer a good view, but the seats are facing backwards, so looking out of the window for too long makes me dizzy. Once out of Colombo we start to climb, a total of 1889 metres in total. The scenery is stunning but the journey is like something from a nightmare. We are crammed into a ... read more

We get up from our damp, smelly bed in our hot, smelly room at 7 am, access WiFi and book another hotel. After a full and frank exchange of views with the receptionist about the state of the hotel, we check out and take a taxi to Colombo. By 11 am, we are checked in, showered and settle down for a couple of hours more sleep in clean beds. We wake to a message from Booking.com saying that Sea Port registered us as a ‘no show’ which means we can’t even post a bad review of our horrible experience. We get up and go for a walk following Lonely Planet’s suggestion for a ‘short stroll’. First point, a spot on the seafront to view pelicans perched on poles. It’s actually a huge construction site with no ... read more

We have booked flights to Colombo via Singapore but our first plane has been cancelled, meaning an earlier flight and a 9 hour layover in Singapore. One last attempt to liberate our laundry - thankfully it is open. She looks as relieved to get her hands on our dollars as we are to get our clothes back. Then off to the airport for our first flight. We are seated separately because the plane is full of school groups. I sit next to an Australian teacher accompanying students who have been doing voluntary work. He tells me how they have taken disabled kids swimming, brought gifts for orphans and sung with blind children. It makes my sightseeing followed by cocktails feel rather shallow. Passengers transiting Singapore are offered a free 2 ½ hour city tour. So we ... read more

We were up nice and early for our walk around deck 7 – which takes us right around the ship. I worked out 7 laps is 4.5 km and took me 50 mins. As we are nearing Colombo there are many ships all around us heading for the same pier. I can also see another cruise ship behind us, it is the Celebrity X. It is quite an experience watching the city come into view and the sun rising behind it. After our walk we went for a swim and then to the top deck to watch the ship dock into the pier. The way they manoeuvre these mammoth machines is unbelievable. There were locals waiting and setting up stalls and taking pictures of the great ship at the dock. They have positioned the ship at ... read more

After breakfast we took the launch across the river to meet Upul. We felt lucky that he was able to take us to the airport. We traveled on the highway so the roads were good and not at all chaotic. We went across the emerald island of serendipity, past Colombo and on to Katunayake airport. It was a day time flight home so the ten and a half hour flight wasn’t so bad. I watched three films and it went quite quickly. Terrible food again though. Sri Lanka is a truly beautiful island slightly smaller than Ireland. A lot of development has taken place since the civil war ended in 2009 with new roads and developments. The south coast has also had to rebuild roads and buildings since the tsunami in 2004 but there is still ... read more

As it seems always the sea was still very rough for our last couple of days but I spent quite a lot of time playing in the surf and getting knocked over by the strong waves. I thought we might lose Caroline at one point when she went a bit too far out. At lunch we had a funny insident when Caroline fell between two bench seats and disappeared under the table. No drink was involved, promise. We just had a couple of lazy days in the pool and on the beach apart from packing our bags for tomorrow. Our last evening was a Sri Lankan Evening but the music was terrible so we chose a table on the other side of the restaurant so it wasn’t so bad. Feeling sad to be going home but ... read more

Pool, beach, sea, repeat, pool, beach, sea, eat, drink, pool beach, sea, eat, listen to live music by the pool - that was our day - lovely. I was thinking of Chrissie while swimming in the warm Indian Ocean and remembering the rough seas we swam in when it was probably not wise to go in the water. Oh and I walked round the bay while the others went for a massage. ?... read more

Although overcast for some of the day it didn’t rain so we were happy. The driver that Upul had arranged took us to the enchanting town of Galle, about one and a half hours along the dangerous coast road. I would like to have gone by train and I think it would have been safer. Probably because it was a cloudy morning and everything looked shabby and neglected I felt really sad for the people of Southern Sri Lanka who are still trying to put their country in order after the tsunami. Such an enormous task. We stopped at a memorial for the local people that died that terrible day and we saw many derelict houses along the way. The resilience of people never fails to amaze me. I loved Galle. It is full of old ... read more

Today we took it easy and had a much needed chill day. In the afternoon I stayed on my terrace or in my room as my tummy was a bit dodgy - it was just as well that we weren’t traveling about today. We went for a walk along the beach in the late afternoon - very pleasant. ... read more
