Woke at 6, which was not my plan! Listened to music, watched the ocean and just generally lazed around until 8.30am. Last night, Aminda showed us the "best room" in the hotel - a suite called the Residence. It was huge, with a fibre optic lit private pool hanging over the gardens and sea. It had a giant jacuzzi and huge Smeg fridge. He didn't tell us the room rate! We like our room though. It has a huge bed, CD/DVD player, bose sound system, plasma screen tv and an ipod, loaded with 6000+ songs. We've got it on shuffle and were jigging around to Bhangra or something like that first thing. There is a library with dvds and books to borrow. Breakfast was a buffet - first time we encountered this. But what a spread! ... read more

I can't believe that today, we finish our "tour" and head for the beach. We got up at 6 to finish packing, drink our bed tea and start our walk. There are numbered/signed walks around each bungalow and this morning, we're doing C2 trail, which is about 6km long. What a stunning walk! We passed through the largely deserted village before 7 - it is Sunday - no work, no chanting! We saw a few people around, but not many. As we passed through the tea picker's cottages, I could smell the communal latrines. We passed churches, Hindu temples, creches and some shops that were just opening up for the day. After the village, we started to climb - in the van a few days ago this had seemed like a very sharp ascent, but on ... read more

Woke at 5. Chanting tape on. Couldn't get back to sleep. It is 8am as I write this. I'm having my bed tea and I'm bloody knackered! All the other guests are leaving today - we're the lucky ones staying here for three nights. I wonder if there'll be new arrivals? Today we've asked Seelan to take us white water rafting. I'm apprehensive now as I'm tired, slightly hungover and it looks quite strenous from photos I saw up in the Summerville office yesterday. In fact, a sign said that you should only go if you are of "good fitness level". Yeah, right - that'd be me. Not. Still not sure if the road is open yet. The manager here has discussed an alternative plan where they can boat us across the lake to Summerville and ... read more

All around the Bogawantalawa valley (easy to cut and paste, harder to say!) are signs pronouncing this as Ceylon's Golden Tea Valley, and proclaiming that this is "Arguably the best tea in the world". I couldn't argue with that, not being a connoisseur of tea myself. I will agree that it is very good tea - and today we're on a short trip to see how it gets from field to cup. We woke at 6 - well, I did. Roy was actually wakened at 5 by Buddhist chanting from a nearby temple - it is played on a tape and the same chant loops over and over for about 45 minutes or so. Didn't wake me though. We'd odered "bed tea" for 7am and it arrived promptly. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to ... read more

After what seemed like a whistlestop tour of Kandy, today we're on the move again. We'd asked for breakfast at 7 - they served it on our verandah. Have I mentioned our verandah - it's huge! Finally got to try something vaguely Sri Lankan to eat - Egg Hoppers and onion sambol. Preceded by a tropical fruit platter. Oh, and the fruit juice they served was pineapple and coriander - great combination. Roy had cornflakes, followed by pancakes with pineapple compote. The egg hoppers were good - I'd been looking forward to trying them, I like eggs a lot and these were tasty. Seelan picked us up at 7.30am - today he's taking us to Perideniya Junction to pick up a train to Hatton. He had a fairly stressful drive across rush hour Kandy to get ... read more

We were up at 6.25am to pack and get ready to leave Vil Uyana. We went straignt after breakfast, at 8am. It is a 2 and a half hour drive to our hotel outside Kandy city - Kandy House. En route we see spice farms, pepper creepers, rose apple trees and many villages and towns. The main town we pass through is Matale which is very busy indeed. I resisted the offer to stop at a spice farm, although I was tempted. The plan was to get to Kandy House and have some time here before our tour of the city later on today. Kandy House is lovely - it is an old Walluwa and has been beautifully restored. We dumped our bags, drank our welcome drink of passion fruit juice and headed straight to the ... read more

We had breakfast and watched peacocks flying around in the trees while we did. This is a huge novelty for me as I've only ever seen peacocks in parks in the UK before. Seelan picked us up at 8.30am and we drove to Polonnaruwa - an ancient city. First stop there was the bank, to withdraw cash and pay off our debts! Next, we had a quick look at the Polonnaruwa Rest house which is situated on the huge Tank at Polonnaruwa. Seelan showed us the room that Queen Elizabeth (allegedly) stayed in during her visit to Sri Lanka in 1954. We took photographs, because he seemed keen that we did. On the way back to the car we were hounded by the first of many hawkers selling maps and postcards of Sri Lanka, hats and ... read more

So this morning we got up at 6am as we were headed for Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This involves climbing up a lot of steps (reports vary, some say 750, others say 1200) and so Seelan decided it would be a good idea to be there when the gates open at 7 - the idea being we'd get the climb out of the way before it got too hot. It was pleasant driving through villages before 7 and seeing schoolkids all up and on their way to school - all in their smart white and blue uniforms. I'd been dreading the rock climb - I'm unfit and I knew it would be tough. It was as hard as I expected. It's a 200m climb but steps all the way up - slopes I can cope with, but ... read more

The reason we've skipped two days from 13th to 15th March is that we flew in overnight on the 13th and so most of yesterday's events happened on the 14th! Confused yet? We woke at 7-ish... I opened the balcony doors and walked out - the heat hit me, and the sounds were incredible. Birds calling everywhere! I was greeted by another water monitor across the paddy, lounging on the wooden walkway. Roy moaned for about 2 hours about having jet lag. On our way to breakfast we met our next door neighbours - a British couple - who said they'd seen the crocodile on the footpath on their way back from dinner last night. Well, they called in an Alligator - but after further debate and investigation, we all agreed that it was a crocodile. ... read more
