We left Friday early morning for Sri Lanka with a quick hour stop-over in Dubai before the 4 hour flight to Colombo. As soon as we got to Colombo we hired a taxi who drove us the 2 and a half hours to Kandy. With the current civil war going on in the north security at and around the airport is extremely tight with many checkpoints around. The trip to Kandy probably could have been done in about 45 minutes if the roads had been straight but there wasn't a single straight path the whole route. We all commented on the fact that we had never been on such windy roads before in our life. The rainy season was just starting there so the afternoon skies quickly turned black as we made the trip before an ... read more

Journal 9 Wednesday 22nd April Walking home from town there were a couple of interesting points. First an overwhelming bad smell, like a really over ripe French cheese - eppoisses - only worse, and moments later I heard a guy shouting Durian - apparently the most pungent fruit in the world, well it certainly stank. Later a man walked by with a monkey on a chain - something I found utterly discomforting, and yet as I walked on the monkey did not seem in any distress and was walking happily - not on a tight leash, and it could easily have been comparable to someone walking a beloved dog on a lead. The moral dilemmas one finds oneself wrestling with are one of the many interesting facets of travel. I may have expected to be outraged ... read more

I had an ominous feeling before leaving for Sri Lanka. Not only had the BBC weather forecast shown torrential rain for the last 5 weeks, but more worryingly the papers were re-ignited with stories about the Sri Lanka governments final push to end the war with the Tamil Tigers. I'd also been giving warnings from Olly's mum about the food hygiene and made an oath that no milk, cheese, ice, water or chicken would pass my lips. Poor Olly was in a stress because life without chicken is no life worth living in his muscle building world! My fears didn't disappear much when we boarded the aircraft at Heathrow to be greeted by a man running up and down the aisles screaming that he needed to be let off the plane because he couldn't go home, ... read more

Journal 8 Sunday 19th April - Tuesday 21st Cleaning up the old house! We awoke and wandered into town for a quick breakfast after which Nicky and the boys returned to paint some pictures to brighten up the place, and then get on with some cleaning, while I headed off for the first of several trips into town for cleaning supplies. We decided to cut our losses on some things to improve how we feel about here and so I went in search of plastic sheeting to cover any surfaces we were using, some bright cheerful crockery of our own, big plastic buckets, bowls and mops, tupperwares, a variety of scourers and cloths and a selection of vittels. Between my various trips Nicky at her most Susanish performed miracles of cleansing, so we had various spaces ... read more

Saturday 18th April We were up early and with some regret headed to the train station. The train due to leave at 07:30 did not arrive until 7.55 and we had worried as more and more people had flooded the platform. As the train pulled in people began to leap aboard and I did the same to grab seats leaving N to restrain the boys who were all for leaping on after me. We admired their spirit but felt it was a risk not worth taking. We got 4 seats together by the door - would have been prime seats but for the fact they were on the sunny side of the train - but still was ok on a modern and fast train. We were looking forward to lunch with Kannan and Sweta in Colombo. ... read more

Friday 17th April After breakfast we took a tuk tuk to Galle Fort and Khalids Guest House. Chatwin would approve of this place, plain white walls, dark floor boards and ceilings, it is calm and simple except the noise of the ice cream vendors outside. With Nick and the boys settling in the rooms I wandered. At the train station I established I could neither reserve seats nor buy tickets in advance. Walking back past the cricket ground I was ushered in to see the ground by the security. Can you imagine that happening at Lords? As I left I wandered up to the walls of the Fort, and bumped into a group of youngsters off to find somewhere to play cricket. They urged me to join them, but I resisted, instead continuing clockwise around the ... read more

Sunday 12th April - Thursday 16th April Galle and Unawatuna We travelled by tuk tuk, train and tuk tuk again further South to Galle and on to the delightful natural crescented sandy beach resort of Unawatuna. The train ride to Galle was much more what we had expected trains here to be like - crowded and full of hawkers selling things smell delicious but we're too scared to eat. We've been talking about Galle since we first mentioned coming to Sri Lanka and werenot disappointed with the first sight of the fort and cricket pitch within 2 minutes of arriving. Unawatuna has also delivered exactly what we wanted. It is a real tropical paradise with the jungle coming down to the meet the beach and just a few fairly low key and a bit ramshackle houses, ... read more

Saturday 11th We had a fab morning playing on the beach, which the boys were understandably sorry to leave. We watched Jake carefully and sensibly snorkelling along an inner reef. He came ashore elated with tales of fish, corals and when asked also having seen anemone. We were proud (as so often we are) of his care and delighted in his pleasure. Lunch was a simple vegetable rice after which we headed off on the local bus - actually not overcrowded and a delight. The water safari was wonderful. Within minutes we saw Monitor Lizards and a Jurassic landscape. We were brought a little monkey to hold which felt very odd (liberal thinking modern western morals do not always sit easy here). We also headed to Cinnamon Island where we were fascinated (especially Jake) by being ... read more

We were up far later than we meant to be having slept deep and long until half nine and almost missed breakfast in the hotel. It was a delicious breakfast including pancakes with bananas (so much more banana than at home, should be BANANA!) and PINEAPPLE (by the same criteria) and honey. After we had packed we headed to the station in a taxi to travel to Unawatuna. There we were met by a friendly and solicitous man named Karu of whom we were initially a little suspicious. He guided us to buy our tickets and to a café where we could eat and drink. After we had settled he came back to talk to us about where we were headed and with photo’s and his visitors book, urging us to come to his guest house ... read more
