We spent two and a half relatively uneventful days on the beach, in a splendid hotel complex in which we took a upstairs downstairs cabana. The boys again got the pick of the rooms, but we have agreed with them that at some point this trip we will get a shot of the prime accommodation. The first day it rained and the adults read, wrote, planned and chatted with the odd dip in the sea while the boys played on the beach. On the second day it was sunny and we spent the time together on the beach and in the surf, the boys particularly revelling in the sand sea surf combination and becoming quite adept at catching waves on the boogie boards they borrowed. The days were uncharacteristically uneventful with a handful of highlights, including ... read more

After a hectic few weeks, and a couple of major changes of climate, wet zone to dry zone and back again there was something reassuring about returning to Colombo. The boys were both suffering a little with sore ears and blocked noses and Elliot in particular had a high temperature. We were not up to much - simple book shopping and lunch (with free wi-fi) at the stylish but ex pat dominated Barefoot (shop/café/gallery), followed by the museum before heading back for some RnR at Kannan and Sweta’s. The museum was interesting - Jake was particularly diverted by the coin collections including some Roman ones which showed they traded with SL all that time ago and Elliot by the puppets. There were religious artefacts and the throne and paraphernalia of the Kandyan Kings - stolen by ... read more

The weekend of 5th-7th June We arrived at the bus station a little later than we ought to have. The first bus was crowded and we decided erroneously to wait for the second. By the time it arrived there were enough passengers waiting to fill the QE2. In the ensuing melee I discovered that the endless hours spent playing rugby as a child were not wasted, but were preparation for getting on the Polonaruwa bus from Kurunegala on a poya (full moon) weekend. I managed to grab a triple row for the four of us to share. Jake got the window seat and Nicky, Elliot a large rucksack and I shared the remaining 2. Even the aisles were packed and the boys were distinctly unimpressed. Luckily we plugged Jake into HP (Harry Potter) on the i-pod ... read more

Today was the last day of our trip to Sri Lanka. Since our Bhante (Buddhist teacher cum organiser of this trip) went to Chennai, India, early in the morning, the rest of us decided to take things slowly today. After waking up at 8am and having a slow breakfast, we packed our luggage and waited for our bus to take us to downtown Colombo for some shopping. However, due to some misunderstanding, the bus arrived very late. (We waited for more than 1 hour...) Nevertheless, we still had a couple of hours to spare, so we went to Manning Market (in the Pettah district, Colombo) for some shopping. Manning Market is basically a huge outdoor market selling all kinds of vegetables, fruits and any organic produces that are edible... Due to the ridiculously low prices, most ... read more

After 2 days of intensive giving/donating/offering, today we could afford to wake up a bit later and have a relaxed breakfast. Since we spent most of the past 2 days doing charity work and didn't manage to have much sightseeing, today our Bhante decided to bring us around Anuradhapura and Mihintale for some cultural sightseeing. We first went to the Sri Maha Bodhi (Sacred Bodhi Tree) temple, in the middle of the Anuradhapura's ancient site. The sacred tree was grown from a cutting taken from the original bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India, where Buddha attained enlightenment. The cutting was brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Sangamitta (sister of Prince Mahinda, who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka) in 3rd century BC. Not long after, the original bodhi tree in India was destroyed, but the "descendant" in Sri ... read more

As so often happens just before a departure our work engagements increased, with people realising we are soon leaving cramming in last tasks. There was also a commensurate growth in social invitations as old(ish) friends tried to fit in goodbyes, and others whom we had yet to socialise with tried to squeeze in a visit before we left. On Monday we met with Sandra (Owner of the school I teach at and the school Jake and Elliot attend as well as lawyer and owner of a fair trade weaving business). Sandra was buoyed by having been listed as one of the top 100 Fair Trade companies globally. She also took us to see the site where she is in the process of building a new school. The present site is overcrowded and poorly laid out. She ... read more

This day was definitely the highlight of this trip. Never in my life had I done so much charity work in 1 day... Not only we did charity work at Mihintale, the holiest place in Sri Lanka, we also went to several refugee camps in northern Sri Lanka to give/offer/donate/distribute... This day was also one of the holiest day in Sri Lanka, as it was Poson day - the day when Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in 3rd century BC by Arahat Maha Mahinda (son of King Asoka of India), who appeared before the Sri Lankan King at Mihintale. Poson is also a full moon festival and is characterised by day-long processions and ceremonies at Mihintale and Anuradhapura. Being Buddhists, we were very honoured to celebrate this important day in Sri Lanka. More importantly, we ... read more

The first 3 days of our trip is pretty blissful, as it was purely sightseeing. On the 4th day, things started to get much more "interesting". This was the day when the REAL work began. (The actual aim of this trip was to make offerings to monks, pilgrims, students, war refugees, etc... It's just that my mum and I arrived earlier than the main group and did some sightseeing before the main group arrived.) In the original schedule, the main group was supposed to arrive at Kandy this morning, to make offerings to monks in Kandy Tooth Relic Temple. However, the schedule had so many changes before the trip that we no longer know when exactly the main group would arrive. To be safe, we decided to wake up early, have a quick breakfast, and wait ... read more

We woke up at 6:30am today and had a quick breakfast at the hotel cafe. At 7:30am, Bala (the guy who offered us a day-trip for 3800 rupees) turned up with his friend. Bala had to work later, so he would let his friend drive us to the various attractions. Before he went to work, he accompanied us to this panoramic viewpoint on the hill, where we had a bird's eye view of Kandy and the surrounding mountains. He also accompanied us to Kandy Central Market, where we bought some fruits, T-shirts, incense sticks and candles. (At the end of the day we would realise that we actually overpaid for our purchases in the market. I would talk about it at the end of this blog.) After the market visit, Bala went to work, leaving his ... read more
