Yay! Got up early in the morning, ready for a Sri Lankan family reunion in Ratnapura. Before we left Kandy, our couchsurfer-friend Ajith took us around to the Botanical Gardens in Kandy. Again, the prices there were a bit of a rip-off, 650 rupees for foreigners and 100 rupees for locals. Anyways, in we went. No more than 200 metres from the entrance we were suddenly met by two monkeys, sitting peacefully on the path. They looked a bit like the vicious monkeys in Bako national park on Borneo, so we didn't want to get too close. Cute they were though. The first thing of note in the garden was the orchid house. So many different kinds of orchids, some looking like ballerinas, some like butterflies, some like stars - and all different beautiful colours. I ... read more

So my next destination was Galle. It has a big ass Dutch momma fort built around the old town and has lots of European style buildings and alley ways within the fort. The wall protected it from the tsunami but cut the wave in two and so was worse for the people living on either side. Still, protected the nice buildings. After the usual theatrics with my tuk tuk scam artist I found a reasonable hotel and went out to explore. Walking the walls of the fort was pretty good and I had a great view. Although to be honest I'm boring myself even thinking about it. There was a literary festival on at the time which is apparently regarded highly around the world. I thought I might as well check it out although it became ... read more

For more of my photos, or to buy my book, please visit www.nickkembel.com The importance of the role of the mystical isle of Lanka in the Buddhist world cannot be under emphasized. Buddhism arrived here some 2200 years ago, and later when the religion died out in India, it survived intact for centuries in Sri Lanka before being carried on to Thailand and South East Asia, where it still exists in it’s original form to this day. This most ancient form of Buddhism is referred to as ‘Theravada’, the ‘teachings of the elders’ or the ‘ancient teachings’, and is demarcated by the classic beggar monks in their bright orange robes, enormous pagodas (referred to in Sri Lanka as Dagobas) housing relics of the Buddha’s body, and an emphasis on the individual and solitary pursuit for ... read more

I see there are 22 people, plus partners sometimes, who read, or at least are invited to read this blog. I thought it would be fun for you to get to know each other a little, and find out who you are exactly, that I would inflict this burden upon. Let's go chronologically, from people I've known the longest, which means that Louise, you are up. Born a year after me, I've known her all her life. Louise is a fiery vegan Leo woman, looks after Aids patients in a hospice. Used to be quite the party animal. Kind of girl I would hit on if I met her in a bar. Actually....ah, that was a long time ago, I was drunk, and I think she's forgiven me. Janet is the next in line, the only ... read more

We were so sad to leave Indo, it is the most amazing place but it was time to move on to KL for a night before flying to the Indian Subcontinent for the first time. First stop, Sri Lanka which we had never really thought about going to until I bought Rich a surf atlas of the world and he looked through it and saw the waves in Sri Lanka! We spent the first 2 nights in Negombo in a crappy hotel but our balcony overlooked the beach which more than made up for it and began getting into a Sri Lankan routine of sweating, eating curry twice a day and drinking tea at least twice a day which we did pretty much everyday for the whole month we spent here!!! We were hoping to hire ... read more

There were two types of people I met on this trip. The first one said "Hello!" to ask me if I needed a tuk tuk or they wanted me to buy something at their shops. Often I replied to them "I am walking to the beach", or "I already booked a car". People in the second group said "Hello!" with big and happy smiles, and I could say that their smiles were one of the biggest and happiest I've ever seen. Perhaps it is because the Sri Lankans live near the sea and the sun shines most of the time, they seem to have a great affection for life, although the country just ended their 26 years of the civil war against the Tamil Tiger separatists in 2009. Woke up this morning, looked in the mirror (always have one in bed with me) and said to myself" Sam, my man, you are looking' good". Said in a Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior kind of black sounding way. I don't know why, that's just the voice I use when I talk to myself sometimes. Then I realized that lot of people probably never experience that feeling, of really liking how they look, happy with who they are, feeling good(almost as important as looking good.) I think I have my mother to thank for that. Although I later had cause to doubt her-Jesus is God, playing with myself is a sin, and so on- when she told me how handsome I was, and how intelligent, I believed her, and never doubted it. Of course it ... read more

14 February 2010 was the first day of the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. It was also a special day for me as I made a trip to Sigiriya and Dambulla. At 5am, I was standing in front of my guest house in Negombo and waiting for a car and driver to pick me up. I booked them the day before at a travel agent in the town and paid US$110 for the trip. There are other great cities in the Cultural Triangle, for example, Anuradhapura, Polonaruwa, Kandy, Mihintale, etc and I would love to see them all. However, I traveled alone on this trip, so I couldn't afford hiring a car and driver for a long trip. It would take at least 3 days to see 4 cities, although the farthest distance is only 200km. ... read more

Well hello again ! Colombo airport welcomed me with an ocean of fibs. My hotel had apparently sent several taxi drivers to meet me, which was strange as I hadn't booked a hotel. I consulted my lonely planet to check prices for a three wheeler to Negombo, the nearest resort and somehow read a much lower figure, meaning I stood bargaining with a driver over 50 pence for half an hour. When i got to my hotel i realised i had demanded a much lower price than was the going rate and refused to budge. And so i continued to endear my self to the locals. I chose Negombo as everyone says Colombo is horrible and Negombo was much closer. It was also a bit minging. I made an effort to tourist my self about, hired a ... read more

When I booked my flights to Sri Lanka, I thought I would visit Colombo for a few days during my Lunar New Year holiday. After reading blogs and advice in the travel forums, I realized that one should not miss the ancient cities in the Cultural Triangle and it's better for tourists to stay in Negombo beach town. It's located 15km away from the Bandaranaike international airport and it takes about 20 minutes to get there by taxi. One of the reasons for skipping Colombo capital city is that the accommodation there is more expensive, plus busy traffic, longer distance from the airport (one hour drive) and also not much to see. I had two options before my arrival in Sri Lanka. If I felt well, I would take a local bus to Dambulla (one of ... read more
