January was a month of visitors from England, and we took advantage of this to travel and have something of a holiday. Sri Lanka does have at least 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites and some wonderful coastline, rainforests, mountains and green tropical beauty. A visit to Pinnewela is always a must!! Following the cessation of hostilities, the tourist travel industry is picking up a little. This is of course good for the economy of the country, but there is always the fear of over-development and loss of a more natural unspoilt beauty. Sri Lanka does have firm ecological principles and policies, which are adhered to for the most part. Thank goodness! With my daughter, we travelled south to Galle, a Dutch based town with fort and walls - just missing the Galle Literary Festival. The coastline ... read more

Next - well, some replies to the last blog indicated that there is an interest in the work that has been going on - as well as the holidays! So, here goes. Most of the focus for my work here for the Diocese has been in the area of Religious Education , or rather Christian education/Christian nurture. Having travelled alongside the Global Citizenship programmes as well as Church linking programmes up until this year, this new focus has been both narrowing and insightful. Christianity here is a minority faith - Sri Lanka is 70% Buddhist, 17% Hindu, 8% Muslim and 8% Christian - so this is Christianity in a post-colonial,south Asian context of pluralism and multiculturalism - a Christianity which lives in the context of religious plurality, multiscriptures and also in the context of poverty, struggle ... read more

So there's a specific bird I'm looking for this day, and I take a little dugout canoe across a shallow river, and start walking. First through the village, a scattering of concrete, mud and plywood and bamboo huts and houses, lots of palms everywhere, dirt paths going through people's gardens, everyone very friendly, we all say hello all day long. Then leaving the houses behind and into more serious jungle, real tropical rainforest. I'm following a river more or less and occasionally the path crosses it, a chance to get naked and find a rock pool in the rapids. After an hour I come into a bit of a clearing and a house straight out of hollywood's idea of a jungle retreat, on the river's edge, packed earth front yard, lots of shade, the word verdant ... read more

Friday 19th His… Woke up early and checked out of our guesthouse, ready for our two hour bus ride to Dambulla, an inland town surrounding the “Cave Temples“. Half an hour into our trip and Miranda needed the toilet, we had coped just fine up until now with the public transport because we had used trains with toilets, but on a bus we had no choice but to get off and then wait for the next one. All the buses coming past were too full to fit us and our massive backpacks on so we ended up opting for a tuk-tuk instead. About ten times the fair of the bus but meant we could stop and buy food, water, use the toilet and look at things of interest. The driver was a nice guy as well ... read more

Wednesday 17th Hers… 6am rise n shine! Time to pack up camp and head north, back to Colombo and then train it to Kandy. Up high in the hills. A local talked the talk at Colombo railway station and offered us his guest house. Including a transfer it sounded like a good deal so we gave in… no commitment required. We arrived at Rodney’s Guest house and with a view across the valley, hot water, and within budget. We were sold. Our location was around the corner from Temple of the Tooth Relic. With the main hoopla starting at 6.45pm we headed off down the mountain to check out what all the fuss was about… $10 bucks each for entry was a little steep, but hey, everyone was flocking here - so must be worth it, ... read more

Monday 15th Feb. Day 2 in Hikkaduwa. I spent the entire day in bed…. No, I did not have dreaded food poisoning, it was instead self inflicted alcohol over indulgence. Jarrod cruised around going on a few walks and kicked back on the beach front. Our hotel has little cabana things on the beach which are pretty comfortable and nice shade from the hot sun - averages about 33 degrees at the moment. It does cool down at night though, and the few degrees makes it easy to sleep, especially with no AC. TIP OF THE DAY: Buy spray on sunscreen and insect repellent - means you are not just rubbing the dust and dirt even further into your skin with a cream. ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Southern Province » Galle February 23rd 2010

Tuesday 16th Hers… As I was a total write-off yesterday, today was a day for exploring. We caught a local bus to Galle - an old town about 20 kms from Hikkaduwa. There is a fort surrounding the old city and is pretty to look at and walk around. Jarrod’s kind smile is a signal to all “come in spinner”. Their line is “Where you from?” “Ahh Australia, ricky ponting?…” and then the dupe goes from there. I was suffering from travel sickness and lagged behind whilst Jarrod’s newest friend took us on a “short cut” to the government shopping centre. This was, of course a rip off. Turned out to be a gem, lace and whatever other local wares that they could possibly sell. We have much to learn about the local touts still. We ... read more

Hello again! Firstly, thanks so much for your messages and emails! So glad you like (and are reading!) my blog!! Love hearing from you guys, even though I can't reply sometimes... :) Oh and I won't have a cell until I get to the UK on March 8th. Anyway, I have to refer back to the journal I've written, because we've been doing so much it's hard to remember what order we did them~ Friday, 12 February - The night after we went to the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnewela, we caught a bus north to Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura is quite a small town but has quite a few good sites. The first day there we went to the Archeological museum, visited the Dagobas/Stpas (bell-shaped Buddhist monument), and some ancient ruins. We also did a lot of monkey-watching! ... read more

His… Friday 13th. We took the train down to Hikkaduwa, about 100km south from Colombo. The journey took about 2 and half hours and cost us 3.5 Australian dollars. The train ride itself was fine, everyone was seated, so there was no sniffing armpits, no air con but all the windows were open so was plenty of fresh air. Arrived in Hikkaduwa where we were escorted down to the ‘happening’ area, where there are all these great guesthouses by the ocean, costing about 10-20 dollars per night. We chose one, for about 10 bucks, that was a bit dirty but had a nice little beach front bar with cheap beers that cost about 2 bucks for a long neck of local beer. Miranda got some ‘threading’ done, if don’t know what it is then look it ... read more

We left Dalhousie after a big breakfast and headed to Kandy. Our guest house has a wonderful view of Kandy lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and was a great place to relax after a busy day with a pot of tea. We headed to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in time for the evening puja. The temple houses Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic - a tooth of Buddha. The tooth was said to be snatched from the flames of the Buddha's funeral pyre in 483 and smuggled into Sri Lanka during the 4th century. The heavily guarded room was opened at 6.30pm for the followers and tourists. The tooth itself is kept in a golden casket shaped like a dagoba which contains a series of six dagoba caskets of ... read more
