HAPPEEEE BIRTHDAY MUM! :) x Helene's friends Claire and Nicola are lovely :) and they're mad enough to take me with them on a 2day action-packed adventure around Sri Lanka. I'm a little over-excited about having travel companions for a change! We're on a bit of a mission to take in half of Sri Lanka in a very short space of time. In about 36hours we're squashing in some of Sri Lanka's finest sights including ancient Sigiriya, the Dambulla rock caves, and the amazing annual Kandy Perehera festival (a massive street parade with about a thousand Kandian dancers and about 60 elephants). There's no time for sleep on this trip. We take the train from Colombo up to Kandy which is a lovely relaxing trip. The rocking of the train makes you want to sleep but ... read more

On the way back from Hakgala Botanic Garden, we decided to stop at the historically famous Seeta Amman temple near the main road. This is the exact spot believed to be place where Sita was held captive by the demon-king Ravana in the Lanka of the epic, Ramayana. Myth has it that Sita, the wife of King Rama , was imprisoned in the Ashoka forests of the region. I was accompanied by a very proud poojari at the temple and showed me signs of the Hanuman's feet and the place where he rest after the battle. Poojari also took me to the palce where Sita had her bath and the place where she used to meditate. ... read more

After having been warned and advised so many times to drive carefully by the hostel owner in Kandy, we entered to the famous Kadugannawa pass, a sheer ascent of 250 meters (820 ft) in a matter of 5km 3miles, complete with 17 hairpin bends. The road was slippery and there was a lack of early warnings along the road which prevent anyone driving fast. We had a break or two along the road. We bought some tea and jaggery made out of kithul honey. It was a relief. At the end of the final hairpin bend, the road passes through a mini-tunnel carved out of a solid rock promontory. The view in all directions is spectacular on the approach to Kandy. The city nestles in a wide plain surrounded by a ring of guarding mountains, with ... read more

We arrived in Kandy a day in advance. We therefore decided to look around famous places rather than spending time drinking hundreds of cups tea. The first place we visited in Kandy was, Gadaladeniya Viharaya- Rock Temple. It was built almost exclusively of stone in 1344 by the Gampola King Wickramabahu, situated on a hilltop, amazing views of the surrounding countryside. The architecture of this temple is Dravidian. The entrance porch features large stone pillars, which support a roof of huge stone slabs. Within the Vihara, an ancient stone plastered into Buddha image looks down upon milk rice pots that have collected food offerings for centuries. The 638-year-Old jack wood doors still exhibit their original paintings. and then, Lankathilaka Raja Maha Viharaya or known as Lankathilaka Viharaya which was constructed in the 14th century AD by ... read more
