Edit Blog Post
The sun is shining, its a beautiful day, my windows are open, I'm enjoying the spring weather and I decided to finally update my blog.
I dont know if anyones realized it yet, but I've been in Korea for 8 months now! 8 months! I cant believe how fast time is flying! Before I know it my parents will be here and then after that I'll only have 2 months left here to enjoy summer and then back home. I'll be excited to go home and see everyone for a month or so. Come September I'm leaving again. I dont really know where for sure, but it'll be somewhere thats not home.
Anyways, like I said before spring is here and I've never been happier. You really never realize how depressing winter is until spring comes and you're in the best mood ever! I suppose though that I did go snowboarding a few times this winter so it really wasnt that bad.
Actually where I left off last time I was just about to go on a snowboarding trip with a whole bunch of people from Youngtong. Anyways, what happened was that the trip was already booked up
before Eamonn, Aidan and I decided to go but they still managed to squeeze us in. It meant there were 10 sweaty, smelly, drunken people in a 5 person room each night, but that just made things even more interesting.
It was gorgeous there, the runs were great, not too crowded, just a really good time. I was getting better although there was this one run when I caught some ice and that was the last thing I remember until I woke up a few seconds later. I opened my eyes and the sun was abnormally bright and my head was killing me. Aidan was beside me making sure I was ok and Eamonn was crawling back up the hill to see if I was ok.
Turns out I was fine, I just gave myself a bit of a concussion. No worries. Actually the thing about hitting my head that irked me the most was the fact that I was more cautious when I was going down runs. I just wanted to get better and go faster but there I was being all cautious making sure I didnt fall and hit my head again. How annoying.
Actually,
Eamonn had a pretty bad fall too that day so we were both being old ladies (no offence Grandma) and we were taking it slow and steady.
Other than that nothing too out of the ordinary happened that weekend. Just the normal things that would happen when you have 10 people squished into a 5 person room and are on a weekend ski trip. It was a blast!
The next 2 weeks were pretty uneventful and probably my least favorite two weeks here. I found out that Eamonn was going back to Ireland for good the next week. And if that wasnt enough, I was also having issues at work. Turns out my boss had been taking money out of my paycehque to pay my internet and electricity bills and then not actually paying them. I learned about this when my internet suddenly got cut off and I got a note on my door saying my electricity and gas would be cut off in 2 days if the bills werent paid. How fun!
It finally got sorted out and all was good again. Actually my life right now is kind of like it was those 2 weeks
and yet for some reason I'm still in the best mood ever! I found out yesterday that my boss has been taking money out of my paycheque for pension. How it works is I pay 90,000won each month out of my paycheque and shes suppose to contribute the same each month and then at the end of my contract I get it all back.
Well I had this feeling that she actually hadnt been contributing to it so I got ahold of the pension office and turns out my feeling was right. She hasnt contributed a dollar (or won) to my account there. Yet, shes been taking 90,000 won out of my paycheque every month.
I also have another eye infection at the moment. Did I mention that I had an eye infection during those 2 weeks as well? Ya, and now I have another one. Seriously, who gets 2 eye infections within a month of each other.
So, my eye is infected, my boss is stealing money from me and yet I'm feeling pretty great today. It has to be the spring weather. Oh and I got my new camera today (yay!) so I'm pretty excited
about that.
I know what I'm going to do about the whole work situation though so next time I update I'll let you know how it goes. Maybe I'll be back in Canada sooner than July. Ok no, I really hope it doesnt come to that and I dont think it will....but then again we'll have to wait and see.
Ok, so the other weekend my coworker invited me to a jimjabong. A jimjabong is a sauna/spa that are very popular in Korea. There are areas seperated for males and females and there is also a floor where both can go. We went to that floor and tried out the different temperature suanas they have. It was really nice and relaxing. Everyone was just lounging around. After that we went to the all female floor where they shower and bath and have more saunas. It was very different than anything I've ever experienced. It wasnt too bad but then again it wasnt my favorite thing either.
That same day we had a going away party for a few people Olympics style. A few people had gotten together to plan an Olympics theme going away party. It was
so much fun! Each team represented a different country and they had events like left handed darts, balloon shaving, beer bong, twister and fear factor eating contests. It was an absolutely fantastic night!
The weekend after that a few of us decided to go snowboarding again. We were planning on all cramming into a small room again but it turned out the hostel had overbooked so we got upgraded to the hotel! We were living in luxury that weekend. The snow was a bit slushy during the day and a bit icy at night....but all in all it was still a great weekend. And no concussion this time.
Last weekend we celebrated St. Patricks day. There was a parade in Seoul (that I actually missed) but a whole bunch of us met up in Seoul during the day. It was a fantastic day/night. St.Patricks usually entails a day/night of drunken events and this St.Patricks was no different.
Other than the issues of money/boss, school is still going really well. They changed the program in March because its the new school year and so now I only teach the 7 year olds. I got to decorate my own
room and everything. Its sweet. The kids (for the most part) are so cute! I definitely have my days when I have no patience with them at all, but for the most part we have a great time.
I'll be in the worst mood ever and they will say or do something that just makes me laugh and I'm in a great mood after. One girl today was writing something and she put a "B" instead of a "b". I told her that she had to change it to a small b and then I looked back she had just written a "B" but really tiny. It was so cute!
I think thats about all I've been up to lately. No plans this weekend. Probably just trying out my new camera and enjoying the great weather.
Hope everyone has a Happy Easter!
