As my Merscation continued, I headed slightly further afield to Seoul Grand Park. Although the park is named Seoul Grand Park, it is actually in Gwacheon in Gyeonggi-do. Seoul Grand Park is a beast, it is absolutely huge. It has many different attractions, such a zoo, theme park, petting zoo, art museum, rose garden, campsite and hiking trails in the surrounding mountains. The park even has its own subway station on line 4. I had been to the park a while ago, maybe 18 months ago, to visit Seoul Land, the theme park. I wasn't very impressed with the theme park, they aren't my cup of tea, but I knew then I wanted to visit again in the future to visit more of the attractions.
The Rose Garden is a permanent feature and has about 30,000 roses belonging to 200 species. The Rose Festival runs for a month from the end of May to the end of June, when the flowers are at their peak and are in full bloom. I walked from the subway station through the entrance to park and followed the signs to the right to reach the rose garden. The garden is quite far into the
park, opposite the zoo, and it took me about ten minutes to get there. I think it was about 3,000 won to enter the rose garden. I paid my entrance fee and entered the garden.
The garden was pretty big, and I spent a good couple of hours wandering around, taking photos, looking at all the different beautiful flowers and relaxing. There were lots of different flowers to see, and they were arranged in different sections. The part in the centre of the garden was the biggest. It was a lovely hot sunny day, the flowers were gorgeous, but some did look like they could do with a good drink. There were some signboards stating what species the roses were. I love a bit of Konglish and the sign saying 'Queen Elegabeth' gave me a chuckle. I wandered past some painters, who were painting the roses. It reminded me of the painters we had seen in Kamikochi in Japan.
The rose garden was pretty quiet, I had definitely expected there to be more people, but MERS had scared them off. Since it was so quiet, I managed to snag a bench in the shade all to myself. I
relaxed and read my kindle for a while. I could definitely get used to being a lady of leisure, this week off work had been lovely and relaxing. There is also a lake in the park and it is at the edge of the rose garden. I wandered down to take a look. There is also a chairlift, which I could see in the distance, but I don't know where it goes. I finished off my exploration of the garden and snapped a few selfies. I then headed out back through the park. There are a few coffee shops and stores on the walk up to the park and I popped in to Dunkin' to get a caffeine fix for the subway ride.
