4 days in Singapore
15% of Singapore’s population is millionaires. In a restaurant a beer costs $15 and up. A 26 of vodka in duty free costs $35 per bottle, a 26 of vodka in a Singaporean liquor store costs $75 per bottle. You can see what I am getting at. I asked if this prevented people from drinking, and the answer I got back was ‘No’. It’s a sign of status, it shows you have money. Singapore has no agriculture, no farms; everything is imported.
Our first day in Singapore
We arrived at our hostel which costs $20 a bunk in a 20 bunk dorm room. We were handed our sheets and pillow cases and taken to the room. Online the rooms looked so clean, and it says the mattresses are sanitized on a regular basis. This must have been when they first opened, because the mattresses now are pretty tinged, and the pillow cases are yellow with sweat. I would’ve preferred the bed to be made so I didn’t have to see that. Our first trip was to go pick up our F1 Grand Prix tickets, so we jumped on the city bus and made our way to
Raffles. Just walking around you could hear the sound of the cars practicing on the track. We spent the evening back at the hostel making new friends.
Day 2 in Singapore
Today we went out exploring. We walked around Arab street, visited a mosque, shopped at Bugis Village and then returned back to the hostel for a little down time before heading out for Dominic’s birthday. We met Dom in Vietnam and he had invited us out then. We went to a lovely place called Wine Connection and enjoyed (for our first time in 7 months) a steak, roasted potatoes, asparagus, and white chocolate cheese cake. We have been craving a good steak for a long time. And just like everything else in Singapore, the meal was ridiculously expensive! Most of the people had tickets to F1 so they left pretty early. Matt asked if we wanted to continue having some drinks and we said sure. We ended up going to a place called Four Floors of Whores. Basically it’s a shopping mall with 4 floors of night clubs. Inside each it is filled with prostitutes. Ladies, Lady boys, and to our surprise quite a few western prostitutes. Prices:
3 shots of B52=$35 3 beers = approx $50 Thankfully Matt bought most of the rounds and we only spent a fraction of what we thought we were going to spend. We left the Four Floors of Whores around 1:00am and came back to the hostel.
Day 3 in Singapore
Grand Prix day, Grand Prix day! We woke up not feeling to good. The alcohol last night gave us pretty big hang overs. After lazing around till 1:00pm we headed down to the marina area. Because of Grand Prix a lot of roads are closed off. We walked along the river front, and ended up going into a pub for a drink. Friggen $9 for a pint of coke a cola, what kind of idiot pays $9 for a glass of soda… WE DO. We paid $9, and it’s not even refillable. Grand Prix was pretty cool. Walking around you get so hyped up with all the advertisements, tv entertainment, merchandise sales etc. The race itself was very loud even with ear plugs in. The cars go by so fast it is impossible to see them, let alone take a photo. There is a good 5 ft gap
between the standing area and the actual track. Michael Shumaker, the legendary F1 racer who has won more races than anyone in the world crashed and taken out the race. The winner was Sebastian Vettel, from the Red Bull Team. Tris enjoyed the race and got himself a souvenir t-shirt. And being the old fogies we are, we opt to leave before the Linkin Park concert to beat the rush, and be in bed at a decent time.
Singapore day 4
Today we went to Sentosa Island. Sentosa traslates to peace and tranquility in Malay. Being off season it wasn’t as exciting as we thought it would be, and of course it was overpriced. We decided to wait a few hours and buy the Noon pass, though it didn’t become effective till 2:30pm. It got us into 4 attractions of our choice. We were told in advance to stop at the grocery store to bring in some snacks to save ourselves some money. A box of crackers, sandwich meat and cheese cost us $17. We spent the morning walking around Sentosa, and catching the trams to different areas of the island. The day was overcast, the beaches weren’t clean and
nothing was really going on. When we finally were able to by our noon passes we first went to the 4D Pirate show. It was pretty funny. The chairs moved, water sprayed us, and air flapped at our feet. We went to a second 4D experience called the log ride. A strong looking man sat behind us and screamed the whole time like a 5 yr old girl. The Luge ride was fun. It’s a cross between a luge and go kart. We also really enjoyed the Segway ride, though it was only 10 minutes. The highlight of our evening, and the reason we even went to Sentosa was for the Sounds of the Sea show; A polytechnic, multimedia, water production. The show was very well done and the audience ooh’d and ahh’d the whole time. The only downside was it was only 20 minutes long.
We fly to Jakarta, Indonesia tomorrow!
