Hvem er det som sier at Thailand er The country of smiles??!!! Hae??!! well, I'll tell you one thing, Mister: that's wrong!

Seeings though our last but one blog captured your imaginations...well the title did anyway based on it zooming to the top of our blog hits, we thought we would continue the sex theme in the title, not that this blog has anything to do with sex! We'd also like to say that this blog is a bit of a rant of a blog about a place which really disappointed us! Our flight from Palawan to Cebu went without incident, that is except for a large group of Filipinos (the front half of the plane) who had possibly never flown before and who did not observe any of the safety rules. At the exact time the plane was about to hit the tarmac on landing, 2 of them decided to get up and remove their bags from ... read more

I have recieved a pretty apt comment that I should chill and take it easy for a few days well I am doing that here in Boracay but I hate to sit still for too long as travel here is extremely time intensive and my time is running out. Three weeks is nowhere near enough to get to just the major sights. Yesterday I caught a trike at 7am to the Jeepney pick up point then a few hours later a mini bus then after another 2 or 3 hours I arrived Roxas Port to be told the ferry had just left. Then a security guard told me to run and I might make the boat which I did, (this saved me an 8 hour wait), I then got off the boat in Caticlan. For ... read more

Untitled Our flight from Changi airport’s budget terminal was uneventful- we were lucky and our flight left on time at 12:20am. We arrived at Cebu and headed straight for the ferry wharf. We got a 6am Oceanjet ferry to Dumaguete, via Tagbilaran. From Dumagete we had a transfer arranged , after 12 hours on the road with little sleep, stinking hot and sweaty (and with lots of other people insisting THEY were picking us up) we were so grateful to see a man waving a sign with our names on it. He pointed us towards our “taxi” and for a second neither of us could see the air con vehicle we had imagined. WRONG.. some backpackers we are anyhow. We had a small jeepney style truck, with us riding in the back on bench seats with ... read more

The title of this entry is more than a little misleading. First, we will visit our friends Jean-Christophe, Tinna, and Gilles in the city of Taichung (Taiwan) before taking off from the capital Taipei to go home to Canada. So, we do have a brief visit in one more country before heading home. Second, the Philippines is anything but a single stop destination. The tourism industry is the least developed that we've seen, and we have had to make several overnight stops in cities we would never choose to be in. That said, the title stands as this was the last place we had earmarked for touring. But let's take a step back to March 9th... Jen and I left flew out of Hanoi on March 8th. We landed in Hong Kong for a 26 hour ... read more

After more than 15 years of advocating ecotourism in the Philippines, I finally found a TRUE ecolodge. And it is located in a small and special island in Negros Occidental. Danjugan is only about 43 hectares in size. But it has coastal lagoons, fringing reefs, great dive and snorkeling sites, good forest cover and trails, a bat cave(!), and a nesting pair of sea eagles! And what makes it a true ecolodge for me? - There is no airconditioning, electricity to light up some bulbs is through solar power, no flushing toilets (you have to use buckets to bring dwon your creation). The accommodation facilities are not made of concrete materials, just wooden and other indigenous stuff. There are no walls covering the sights of the ocean and the sunset. Danjugan is no typical tourist destination. ... read more

After wandering in the world, it gets pretty lonesome despite all the people you meet. You engage in what they call the pursuit of happiness. And for some people, happiness is found in that perfect person. At an early age, I was already searching. I was lucky to have met Valerie when I was just 15 years old. But, never did it start romantically because my eyes were fixed elsewhere. After two years of friendship, I realized how much I liked spending time with her. Yes, I could not admit love, I just got jealous of the thought that she can’t be mine until I say so. So I must say love. Love is such a possessive thing. It justifies illogical thoughts like committing yourself to one person for the rest of your life. I finally ... read more

after leaving the romblon islands i decided to check out some towns on the island of negros. i went to bacolod and dumaguete. bacolod was a smaller city (about 450,000). it was a very friendly city. it was kind of warm the few days i spent there, so i mainly stayed indoors during the day, either in internet cafes or at the movies. can't beat it, here the movies cost $1-2. at night bacolod was a different town. it is the official fried and roasted chicken capital of the philippines. on any block there could be 4-5 chicken stands. was so tasty. always freshly cooked in front of you. luckily there was a gym next door to my hotel to burn it off. dumaguete was an unexpected surprise. i only thought it was going to stay ... read more

Welcome to the Philippines, a country made up of 7,000 islands, a place of cock fighting, karaoke and of text messaging (more than anywhere else in the world apparently). It is also home to some of the best beaches and diving in the world, it has a history of political corruption and unrest and there still certain areas of the country that are out of bounds to tourists. Our visit to the Philippines started with an epic plane journey from Perth to Singapore (disappointed that Singapore airport was just like any other & no chance to swim in their pool), a change of planes and onwards to Manila and then yet another flight to the Filipino city of Cebu all on the same day. No we don't know why Philippines has a P and Filipino an ... read more
