DISCLAIMER: I AM VERY HAPPY HERE AND THE PEOPLE ARE TRULY THE CAT'S PAJAMAS. THIS IS ABOUT ME AND MY SHORTCOMINGS. ALSO, THAT LITTLE BIT AT THE END IS A BIT OVERSTATED, SO DON'T WORRY. THIS IS ME TRYING TO BE HONEST, NOT A CRY FOR HELP. PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME IF I WANT TO TALK ABOUT ANYTHING. So I spent all of last week in a region called Bicol in the very south of Luzon, the northern most of the main islands. I was there to interview people who were touched massive flooding and landslides that followed a super typhoon that landed there in late November of last year. It's particularly rough because this area is prone to disaster as most typhoons that hit the Philippines hit here and because there is an active ... read more

The unwelcoming dark, silent, rough road greeted me inhospitably. In an instant, it threateningly challenged my passion and my courage to begin. Mt. Makiling did not seem to be very inviting. It was strange though that I did not even have qualms about climbing. For a first time climber, I love the very idea of communing with one giant piece of nature which will present me a grand showcase of her riches. Yes, my climbing buddy was a securing presence; he certainly made me feel protected even amidst the vast darkness of the beginning trail. But, more than anything else, it was the unexplainable resoluteness and bizarre confidence in me that actually drove me. That dawn of March 29, I was to put my lame, lazy, skinny frame to a great ordeal. The entrance trail, though ... read more

I spent the last of this week on a quick exposure trip to Southern Tagalog. Though I am still finding the geography a little hard to follow - Canada has a few BIG provinces, while the Philippines has a TON of little provinces - I am almost positive that Southern Tagalog is the area at the bottom of Luzon, including the island of Palawan. The organization I am working with right now thought it was important for me to see this area because it is one of the areas with the heaviest military presence in the country. In fact this region has the second biggest military presence bested only by Mindono, the area suspected of so much Muslim terrorist action. My trip actually started in Manila, because there is a group of about 70 internal refugees ... read more

We finally went to Enchanted Kingdom at Sta. Rosa Laguna last Nov.30, 2007 with my co-workers- Hazel, Flor, Iro(Flor's daughter), Jerome(my nephew) & Hazel's friend whose name escaped my memory. Anyway the trip to EK was postponed a week ago due to a typhoon that never came. We were expecting a lot of people there because Nov. 30 was a holiday(Bonifacio Day) so that means there were no classes for the students and for those who are working(like us) it's ok not to report for work. So Jerome and I left at 7:45AM bound for Sta. Rosa Laguna. We boarded a van at Pala-pala Dasma Cavite and arrived at Balibago Complex(Sta. Rosa) at around 9AM. Flor informed me that they're gonna be late coz at around that time they had just met at Alabang and they're ... read more

Lakbay Laguna-Quezon 2007, Day by Day Christian Mnistries. On a friday, we set out for the towns of San Pablo, Laguna and Tiaong, Quezon. Our Lakbay Ministry organized a Lakbay Kulinarya Tagala (Culinary of Southern Tagalog). We also visited the home (cum workshop) of local artists in the region. Most of us who joined have travelled to these places. I'm curious to what's new in these places since I have not been travelling here for quite sometime. Times have changed, there are a lot of things to see and do here. They have an organization which promotes tourism for this southern sojourn. Do get a copy of "Viaje del Sol", "The Way of the Sun from San Pablo to Quezon", a map (brochure). Our first stop was breakfast at Kusina Salud, San Pablo, Laguna. This place ... read more

The rain was continuous, threatening to become stronger and storm signal no. 1 was up in Metro Manila. To go or not to goDennis wanted to race and got registered in the National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) leg but the sky was dark and raining when we woke up that day. He called up the organizers and was told that the race would go on - we wondered why??? Manila was experiencing storm signal no.1, so maybe it wasn't raining at all in Laguna. Dennis decided that we must go, so we prepared for the race and good thing the race would start at 3pm. This was unusual - starting race is 3pm. Usually, by 3pm, the sun is hot and the heat from the sun makes one become ... read more
