Siniloan is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Laguna, Philippines. It has a total land area of 6,442.88 hectares politically subdivided into 20 barangays. Siniloan was established as a town on the last Friday of August, 1583 with Guiling-Guiling as its first name born out of an anecdote when a group of Spaniards passed by a rice field where some women were grinding rice with the use of grindstone or "gilingang bato". In 2002, the Municipality launched "Gilingan Festival" to commemorate its foundation day highlighted by street dancing and a variety of cultural ... read more

It is a long weekend and we took the chance to visit Villa Escudero where a vast coconut plantation estate has been converted into a tourist destination south of Manila. Left Manila 6:30am and reached this hacienda well before 9am. A welcome drink of "gulaman" , a local drink made of diced gelatine and sugared water was most refreshing. Day Tour Inclusions Country life, then and now, is what Villa Escudero is all about. Our kids, aged 12 and 9, accustomed to urban living, would do well to have this 'introduction' to provincial life. The adults? Well, we can all do with this break. And country air is definitely something of a luxury these days, despite the heat. The day tour costs 1,250 pesos or nearly US$30. Included in this package is a Museum tour of ... read more

All of us, no matter how old we are have an inner child within us that wants to go out and play. A kid in us that even for just a day wants to have fun and amuse ourselves. We do certain things to entertain ourselves. I’ve seen old people fool around, watch cartoons and even make fun of themselves. Others play sports, do pranks and crack jokes just to feel the laughter of a child again. For a child’s simple laugh is what we all envy for it is purely free from problems and dilemmas. Well, this time, it’s me and my friends turn to reconcile our childhood days all over again. We went to the most popular theme park which is Enchanted Kingdom found in Laguna, Philippines. It’s been a while since I ... read more

I remember when I was on my grade school; we used to visit century-old churches in Rizal during Holy Week for our annual Visita Iglesia practice. I was surprised back then that in just an hour drive from our home lays a rich cultural and historic heritage yet to be discovered by my young mind. After 10 years, I went back to those churches I had visited in Rizal when I was still a kid and in addition, some of the churches in Laguna and Quezon. In an early Saturday morning some time March 2007, I was so excited for our tour that I didn't able to eat breakfast properly so we stopped at a Tropical Hut Restaurant in Morong, Rizal. We decided that we went straight first to our hotel in Sariaya before doing our ... read more

Pagsanjan Falls Rapids The whole family was enjoying the rapids from the main stream of Pagsanjan Falls during our visit to the Falls in 2007. Going up the main falls was not easy as it was going upstream but going down was fun as you feel the thrill and the skills of the "boatmen". Enjoy the video!!!! ... read more

Mt. Romelo Siniloan, Laguna Philippines This mountain is one of the most memorable and unforgetable place ive been into, this is my first climb, 4 years ago. Its their (Grace and John) first time here, been here a couple of times. Its a bit depressing to see how the condition of this place got degraded through the years. The last time ive been in here was on 2006. The rocks was not yet arranged but. there is also a strong presence of commercialism. Stores everywhere. And you can even see a group of campers who do the bathing in the river just like how they do it in their home, soap and shampoo. Maybe a few years from now, this will be like Hinulugang Taktak in Antipolo. Falls to be visited, Buruwisan, Old Buruwisan, Sampaloc, Batya ... read more

I've been in Philippines almost 10 days now and I'm wondering how I ever managed to cram in my family visits on my usual 2 - 3 week vacations here. My first week was spent in Metro Manila with my family on my mum's side and became increasingly more busy towards the end of the week with it being All Saint's. My cousin AJ is in a band called Tabass and over the past year they've been working really hard writing songs and getting themselves heard, so imagine the excitement when they were invited to perform at the Hard Rock Café in Makati alongside some other indie bands!!?? I'm so happy I was hear to see it and loved every second. I recorded their set on my phone and was simaltaneously trigger happy with the camera ... read more

So I'll just jump right in if it's all the same to you. I spent most of this last week writing about the people I've been talking to or working on the workshop I had to teach on Wednesday to the staff. Apparently, someone made the monumental mistake of assuming that I knew something about anything and thought that I should teach the staff about it. As a result, I spent the Monday and Tuesday preparing for my teaching debut, an hour-long workshop on newsletter writing. I know, I know, my credentials in this area are both impressive and extensive as I ghostwrite for several corporate newsletters on the side, but I found the task daunting nonetheless. It took every ounce of courage in me not fashion a rudimentary parachute and defenestrate myself from the 14th ... read more

Okay, so that last post was probably a mistake and I apologize. Won't happen again, I swear. So I've seen and done a lot this week. Right now, there is a huge rice shortage in the Philippines, and the recent typhoon has not helped. In one of the more hard hit areas, the price of rice is almost three times higher than the already inflated national average. There were actually stories on the news of people killing for rice in that area, which is pretty difficult to wrap one's mind around. Right now I'm reading a book set in a charred wasteland where people have to kill for food, and hearing that story took me straight to the book, which is a pretty scary connection between this world and the fictional one I am reading about. ... read more
