What to do in Davao? I have made many visits to Davao in the past, and have felt I have run out of things to do. There is the famous Pearl Farm in Samal Island. I would not mind going back again, but surely , there has got to be other things to do. Then there is the Eden Nature Park where I remember fishing with my little Patricia, then aged 3. She caught a small one, yet that was one of her proudest moments then. Having made this 90 minute plane ride from Manila to this part of Southern Philippines, I thought we were ready for some unexpected twists on this trip. As soon as we arrived , I was pleasantly surprised with the new Davao International Airport. It is not huge, but the place ... read more

As always, travel to Davao City is something i really look forward to. My first visit to Davao City was in October 1995 when i attended the National Conference for Architects, and the rest was history. I can't count anymore how many times i have visited Davao and each visit is always a new experience. Last year, i visited Davao City in October for 8 days due to training and again UAP-NCA. One thing, i can't forget was my Digos experience with my colleagues, shina, hazel, franie and bong. No activity for that day in our NCA that we decided to go zip-lining. We travelled for 3 hours to Digos by a rented cab then from Digos we have to take a motorcycle to reach the foot of the mountain(another 20 KM) where we will ride ... read more

Updates updates!! How was your week? Mine flew by!! This week I was a class assistant for the Religion: Peacebuilding in Multi-Cultural Society class and it was absolutely amazing getting to know my classmates and hear some of their stories. I shared space with people who have had guns pointed at their heads or have had RPGs or M-16 Rifles forced into their hands. Yet, in the same space, there are people from India, who are on complete opposite ends on the Caste System, coming together and sharing meals. WEEKLY UPDATE: Monday: The new George Mason University group arrived this week as well. I am happy to say that they seem to be just as eager to learn about the Philippines and its culture as "my" study abroad group was last summer. Although, I must admit, ... read more

Hi everyone! I feel so grateful to be writing to you again from the Philippines. Last summer was an amazing experience, and I knew I was going to be back, I just didn't think it was going to be within a year!! The "outbound" trip (Washington DC - Chicago - Hong Kong - Manila) went by a lot quicker than last years. This summer's traveling is a volunteer trip to the Philippines and Thailand. I am also planning on backpacking Laos and possibly Burma. Right now, however, I am in the Philippines. Arriving late Monday night (around 23:45), my friend Samantha and I were planning on catching the 04:10 flight to Davao, where the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute (MPI) is located - more details about that later! All flights to Davao, however, were full!! I'm so thankful ... read more

Hello again! We are still on the island of Samal. The small paradise island where the more fortunate people of Philippines and Davao go to enjoy a day in the weekends. We have notice the fact as the resort got invaded by locals to celebrate a day with their families enjoying sun, bath and some food. The few of us staying at the resort was aware of the crowd already by breakfast. Like Germans they had already occupied the sun-chairs on the beach and by noon we stood there as two misguided tourists asking ourselves where to go. To the reception! Off we went. We kindly asked if we as hotel-guests were to wake up 6 am to secure on of the sun-chairs? The five nice clerks immediately called for assistance. Two members of the beach-staff ... read more
