I sought refuge from Cebu City on the opposite side of the island in a small coastal village that goes by the name of Moalboal. It was a very sleepy and laid back little place which just so happened to be right up my street after the exploits encountered in Cebu City. The majority of the tourists here being divers, mostly Korean. Diving doesn't really appeal to me so I spent the majority of the time trekking about the area with the odd spot of swimming here and there. Unlike Cebuites the locals here are mostly friendly, greeting you as you walk by. In the evening things would liven up a little at The Sand Bar where I would meet up with 3 fellow Englishmen and drink until I couldn't see very well. This was pretty ... read more

We flew from Boracay to Cebu on Day 5. We were a bit disappointed upon arrival at Costabella Tropical Beach Resort in Mactan Island. There was nobody at the place, the beach was very small, and there were large fences between the resorts so you couldn't walk down the beach and people watch like you could in Boracay. The place was hurting due to the economy. Magellan the Spanish explorer, met his death at the hands of Cebu Chieftain Lapu-Lapu in 1521 AD. The remaining 18 crew members of the original 237 returned to Spain in 1522 completing the first full navigation around the earth. We were a bit bored with Mactan, so we had a Taxi driver take us on a 2 hour tour and then to the best white sand beach he knew of ... read more

Dear all, Can you believe it...we are now half way through our trip! We have spent the past six months travelling through Asia...Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. I love Asia and I am glad that we spent a good chunk of time here but I am now ready to move on. Also these are all countries that I have been lucky enough to visit before but in the next segment of travelling I am visiting plenty of new places. In about ten days we are heading to Palau in Micronesia and I am very excited about that! I think that things are going to get even more different and exotic! For anyone who hasn't been lucky enough to travel or is thinking about it..it really is an individual experience and it is hard to sum ... read more

Dear all, So we had been on Boracay for five days and we had walked/run 41miles up and down the famous White Beach...it was safe to say that we had seen the beach and that it was time to move on! We had also been lucky enough to join in with the Ati Atihan celebrations, although I still don't fully know what we were celebrating! We packed up our bags and 1 tricycle, 1 boat, 2 buses, 2 taxies, 1 plane and a truck later we arrived in Moalboal on Cebu. We checked into the room that I had booked only to find that it was about the size of a broom cupboard and that the free in room WIFI didn't actually exist!! But on the plus side it was clean and there were no bugs ... read more

So we arrived in the Philippines just in time for my birthday, so thought it would be a good idea to head straight to a beach with diving for Dom and a luxury resort for me! So we spent an interesting night in Manila and then hopped straight on a flight to Cebu city where we spent an entire day looking for accommodation. We are seriously about to throw our lonely planet away as it just sucks, in fact we're not sure the people who write the Philippines section have ever been here! The bus from Cebu to Moalboal where we headed with Lisa and James was also good fun, there's no need to visit theme parks here just hop on a bus where they dive 100km an hour and overtake where ever the hell they ... read more

Ok, so where I left off I was still in Boracay. I'm actually long past that and relaxing in Cebu City now, but I don't mind reaching back into my memory and re-visiting Boracay and later Moalboal. On the first day in Boracay, like I said, I had gone and checked out one of the kiteboarding schools. The one I chose was www.freestyle-boracay.com. They were cool, after explaining my winter spent kiting on the snow, the owner, a Filipino named Ken agreed to let me rent without a lesson. So the next morning, right around noon I went back and got underway. While not taking a lesson, I did get help from a guy named Toto. He's not an instructor, he just helps them out and helped me rig up the kite and all that, he ... read more

Chuseok is labeled on our calendars as the Korean Thanksgiving. However, if you think about that for a second, it seems odd that Korea would celebrate Thanksgiving. Christmas, yes. New Years, of course. Even Halloween if you want. But Thanksgiving? I thought the fourth Thursday of each November was a uniquely North American holiday celebrating the survival of the pilgrims through the first Winters in the New World. Not to mention the fact that the Korean holiday Chuseok is celebrated sometime in September or October and has nothing to do with eating turkey, stuffing, or apple pie. It seems hardly to be anything like the Thanksgiving I know from America. However, upon a little further research I have found that Chuseok is a holiday celebrating the harvest just as Thanksgiving is supposed to be the holiday ... read more
