I arrived in Kathmandu today after 14 hours travelling from London via Doha. Travelled with 9 other volunteers so felt less lonely. I just followed them so I did not get lost! The decent into Kathmandu was quite something. We came in very low over housing and some of it was suspect. The airport was very busy and noisy and the coach journey to our Guest House was punctuated by endless beeping of horns. However we arrived safely and had a brief meeting with the Nepali VSO staff. We were given our first allowance! I now have money to spend! We have a very full programme over the next 6 weeks - mainly language training. It looks quite daunting. Well, it has been a very busy day and half and I am feeling very tired and ... read more

Nepal....just saying the word conjures up all sorts of images - vistas filled with sparkling white mountains, monks winding their way through hilltop villages chanting buddhist mantras, tigers stalking their prey through overgrown jungle and strangely painted Sadhus wandering on foot along dirty, dusty roads. While many of these images are accurate (and some of them we even saw), there is also a different side to Nepal - people will calmly wait in a queue for several hours or days to fill up their car, tuk-tuk or motorbike with petrol; people are welcoming, friendly and hospitable despite the fact that the country only opened up to foreigners in the last few years; and finally it is a place where the prevailing attitude is one of "what can you do" (usually accompanied by a shrug of the ... read more

The shortest flight thus far seemed to be the longest as the anticipation of reaching nepal was unbearable. Before we began our final decent, I already was able to look across the plain to the Himalaya range (which was at least at eye level with our airbus320). The airport was as unofficial as I've ever seen. And this trend seems to be part of the nepali way. At the "visa application counter," a man in regular clothes asked for my disembarkation card. There was a line for the $30 visa, and I got a receipt no more official than what jim carey gave as an IOU in dumb and dumber after he spent all his money on a lambo and some furry shoes. That receipt, I gave to another guy. He placed a sticker in my ... read more

You know you’re in a far corner of the world when all of your friends who said they wanted to come visit start realizing that they cannot after taking into account the 36 hours, $2000, and multiple immunizations it takes to get here. I can understand them bailing, but it makes me feel a little lonely that no one but my 1 or 2 more adventurous friends or those who have already been here will be coming to visit. I was looking forward to playing tour guide and having more people understand me when I talk about the craziness of Kathmandu, but it’s starting to look like that’s not going to happen. So I’m trying to keep busy since returning from Rome so that the loneliness doesn’t take over. But it’s been hard since my research ... read more
