Hey Everyone, I have not been able to send anything to you since being here in Nepal. The technology is not that great and just having the power on is a luxury. We have been here in Katmandu for 5 days now and have seen loads of great Buddhist teachers. We have already seen: Lama Kunzang Dorje Rinpoche Karma Chagme Rinpoche Lama Piru Khenpo Gelek Gyantso Rinpoche Tulku Yeshe Rinpoche Khyabje Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche Semo Saraswati And more... All I can write is what I know and what I know is this: the world changes everyday and, if you let yourself, you will change with it. I've been thinking a lot since I came to this part of the world, about people and places far away and out of reach, and about the ones staring me right in the face, that I couldn't or maybe wouldn't want to escape from. This phenomena around and inside of me, be it physical and present or conjured up by memory or fantasy, are the tools the world has given me. With their influence my thoughts are shaped, though not set. That final moment of assessment, the one that ultimately predicts mood and action, that is entirely up to me. This notion of understanding instills in me ... read more

i've spent the last 10 or so days at a tibetan-refugee settlement in the solukhumbu region of nepal, with intentions of researching the way people practice farming there. i got off the plane and started walking, not really knowing how to get there, and having no map or guide. i just kept stopping and pointing ahead, asking "chailsa?" (the name of the settlement) to everyone i passed. i eventually got there, after a 2 hour walk uphill and went in search of a man named norbu to whom my teacher had written a letter. norbu is his friend and this letter was asking him to help me during my time there. i was directed to his sister, who took me further uphill to norbu's house. we found him sleeping (and drunk, i think). he read the ... read more

this is one of the harder entries for me to begin. it's hard to know where to start or how to sum up the past few weeks. i guess for personal relfection's sake and for your understanding's sake, i should just start. about a month ago i left kathmandu and took a 10 hour bus ride (3 1/2 of which were spent in stand-still traffic) to the nepali city of pokhara. its a pretty touristy destination, a lot of people hit it on their way up to the annapurna trekking circuit. we spent the night there and took an early flight into the airport at jomsom. jomsom is the first town in the region known as mustang, where i spent the next 20 days. we began walking that day, about 3-4 hours until we arrived that ... read more

We knew, from reading about it and speaking with other tourist, that Bodnath was going to be special and it most certainly did not let us down. We left Kathmandu, by taxi, and it only took about 25 minutes (and $3.25) to reach the small village of Bodnath. As soon as we arrived in town we could see the famous GIGANTIC Bodnath stupa towering over the buildings that were blocking it from the main street. Incredible. We were let out at the entrance to the stupa, grabbed our backpacks and turned around to see the giant stupa in front of us. Our jaws dropped. We had seen enormous structures of faith before but this one was so different and absolutely gorgeous. It was MASSIVE, gleaming white (too bright to look at in the midday sunlight) and ... read more

Well, I've returned from the silence. The sitting. The meditation. And the feeling is quite overwhelming. For any of you who don't know what I just put my self through, I will fill you in quickly. I applied to take a 10 day Silent Meditation in the Vipassana technique. Vipassana means to "see things as they really are" and was the meditation practice of Gotama the Buddha. It basically involves sitting in the same position for over an hour, observing your breath and trying to accept the fact that the intense knee and back pain is "impermanent" and will pass, much like this life that we live. You are also supposed to observe all of the other sensations on your body, like the itches and the tingling and the legs falling asleep without reaction to them. ... read more

Boudhanath or the Khāsa Caitya is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Kathmandu. It is known as Khāsti by Newars as Bauddha or Bodh-nāth by modern speakers of Nepali. It is located about 11 km (7 miles) from the center and northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu, the stupa's massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal. The Buddhist stupa of Boudhanath dominates the skyline. The ancient Stupa is one of the largest in the world. The influx of large populations of Tibetan refugees from China has seen the construction of over 50 Tibetan Gompas (Monasteries) around Boudhanath.... read more
