Kathmandu and around One week, three trips and $140 is what it took to get my Indian visa. If I was Ozzy it would have cost me $40. Arriving back in Thamel from such beautiful scenery was a real shock to the system. You sort of forget what it’s all about. The beeping and hocking had gotten worse, and without a dust mask it was hard to breathe. But on a Sunday evening, after a five hours bus trip turned to eight we only had one goal. Falafel! I don’t know if it is because we are away from home, but anytime you catch a sniff of good western food I could swear it is the best ever tasted. At the end of Mandala street (quiet little walking street in Thamel lanes) and opposite Pumperninckal bakery, ... read more

Prayer flags on the Stupa

This morning I woke up to the sound of gongs and chants from the nearby monasteries. It's a peaceful, hypnotic sound, and I fell back asleep feeling strangely comfortable in this new, completely foreign place. I'm in Bhouda, or Boudhanath, a holy site in Kathmandu. At the center of the area is a stupa, a kind of circular religious shrine where pilgrims come to pray and meditate. It's customary to only walk in a clockwise direction around the stupa, so as not to disturb the positive flow of energy - even if the place you want to get to is only a few meters in the other direction, you should go with the flow all the way around. There are prayer wheels all the way around that you spin as you walk past. Coming from the ... read more

The 14th century old Great Stupa of Boudhanath, Kathmandu, Nepal never ceased to fail me because of its gigantic three level Mandala dome, a height of thirty six meters, with sixteen walls of one hundred and eight small turning wheels, adorned with colored prayer flags that waved gracefully against the sky. Four pairs of Buddha’s eyes facing four directions marking my steps, my thoughts and my speech. A circumambulate (kora) of one hundred and fifty meters which only took twenty minutes to walk round the Stupa. Well, I usually take more than this, maybe close to two hours, twice or thrice a day for my photography session of the Stupa, the people and the surrounding. These devotees’ starts very early in the morning, around 5.00am and ends at 8.00pm. Herbal Incense filled the air, offerings of ... read more

We arrived in Kathmandu late last night and today has been quite full of activities so this is the first chance I've had to get on a computer. The group was 11 in size leaving the UK with 2 more joining us in Kathmandu. We flew from Heathrow to Kathmandu via Abu Dhabi with Etihad airways. Both flights were on time but we had a 7 hour stopover in Abu Dhabi so 5 of us decided to try and go into Abu Dhabi city centre to pass some time and to have a general look around. In fact it turned out to be quite easy to leave the airport plus you get the extra entry and exit stamps in your passport for the United Arab Emirates. There is a shuttle bus just outside terminal 3 which ... read more

15th Oct ’12 Pashupatinath and Bodhnath So our final full day in Kathmandu and today we jumped in another taxi and headed to Pashupatinath. Although it wasn’t far it took ages to get there once again due to the traffic, our driver took loads of turns up tiny alleys which no one at home would have considered trying to get down, but he squeezed his way through, missing people and stalls by millimetres. We rattled and jottled along down rough broken up streets with potholes and half bricks everywhere, inched our way out the wrong way across main roads with nose to tail traffic and no one wanting to give an inch but some how we made it and pulled up near one of the entrances to Pashupatinath. The temple here is the most important Hindu ... read more

As of today, I’ve been on the road for one year. I think it’s only appropriate that I’ll be spending it on a bus crossing back into India. It feels like just the other day that I was at the San Jose airport, being denied my boarding pass to Turkey for not having an exit ticket. Yet, I realized that I’d been away for a long time while I was in the ladies restroom last week, waiting to use the toilet. The first clue that I’d grown accustomed to life in the East was that I didn’t expect a line, or any concept of first-come-first-serve. We all stood in a large huddle, knowing that the woman who walked towards an opening door with the most confidence would be the one who gained use of the facility. ... read more

I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself when I first found out that I wouldn’t be able to return to India until I had completed the two-month suspension period. My only thought was to do another Vipassana course, but the next one didn’t start for another two weeks. What to do? I decided to give CS another try, although my experience in Nepal had thus far been a letdown. I wanted someone to talk to. The first person I got in contact with had no references, but there was once a point when I was in the same position and someone still gave me a chance. It was time to pay the kindness forward. I met him downtown and we walked to his apartment. It was early morning, the time of the daily slaughter. ... read more

Yesterday we planned out our time in Nepal with the help of the Travel desk at the Hyatt. High on the list of priorities was to do a flight past Mt Everest. Today was our first attempt at this challenge which involved rising at 5.30am, a drive to the airport, go through security procedures and then into the waiting room in anticipation of boarding. After waiting for an hour or so we were informed that the flight was cancelled due to bad weather and we learnt that the flight will not eventuate unless you are gauranteed a view of the Mountain. So it was back to the motel for a delicious brreakfast. Diary entry: "We have hit monsoon season and the weather is humid and rain showers, particularly in the afternooons. We headed into Thamel. I love ... read more
