I can feel the low temperature decreasing as I climb up higher altitude. I stand still, observing those amazing landscapes surrounding me, and I continue to inhale the freshness of -14 degrees while the sun illuminates my face. Oh, Mother Nature, where shall I begin to describe your beauty... Mongolia 2019.... read more

After having such an amazing time working on a volcano in Nicaragua last year I thought I’d check out what other expeditions were on offer from the same volunteer charity, Earthwatch. After a perusal of all the exciting locations I decided I fancied a trip to the wilds of Mongolia, well why not. What did I know about Mongolia? Not a lot, mostly Genghis Khan (actually it’s Chinggis), horses and Gers (Yurt is the Russian name for them, I’ve re-educated myself to get it right!). I was also told about something called ‘Mongolian Death Worms’ as well, however I think my leg was being pulled a bit on that one. I signed up for a trip called ‘Wildlife of the Mongolian Steppe’, got a visa, booked some flights, packed my rucksack and headed off into the ... read more

SAYNSHAND - DAY 3 After a pretty good nights' sleep and an easy morning devouring another chapter or two of my book, we walked over to the museum at around 10-ish, as we were going to meet Sara at 11. First stop of course was 'The Castle', where we bought some food and the much needed fluids for our desert trip. Sitting outside the museum catching the first rays of October, we met a fellow traveler, quite a character acually, who was also planning to head over to Khamarin Khiid. His plan was slightly different from ours though, since we were planning to come back... Apparently he wanted to stay at the monastry for 2 whole weeks! So with the three of us and what I would say, a very handsome driver, we set off across ... read more

It is the October holiday in China celebrating 59 years People’s Republic. The whole country is off for 3 days and so were we, together with the weekend 5 days off in a row. The mission: Mongolia! I and my best mate Johan set off early Monday morning in a bus from Hohhot to the border city of Erlianhot. The 6 hour trip was quite alright, we arrived early afternoon with the intention to look at the dinosaur museum, before heading to Mongolia the next day. Luckily we found out that the border was going to be closed from the next day for 3 days, so we got our stuff and a taxi to the actual border. There it is impossible to cross on foot, so this Chinese took us for 50 quai each across the ... read more

HOHHOT-ERLIANHOT-ZAMYN UUD DAY 1 Me and my friend Kerstin decided that the best way to spend the Chinese National holiday, was to head across the border into Mongolia. So on Monday morning at 08:00 we departed the bus station in Hohhot, destined for Erlianhot, the border town. 4 Chapters of my book about the Karakoram highway and a few short naps later we arrived. Our initial plan was to check out the dinosaur museum and surroundings, but when we were informed by the hotel staff that the border was going to be closed for a few days, we decided instead to head across that same day. We took the taxi and were meaning to walk across, but apparently this was not to be done. So we got a lift in the back of an SUV, after ... read more

After saying goodbye to the truck whom I will meet in Mongolia I went to say my final goodbyes to my roommates at the Red Lantern Hostel in the hutongs, had lunch with them and left for the bus terminal for Erlianhot, one of the concierge from Hu Guo Si hotel came with me and help me find the guy selling tickets for the sleeper bus, we have to go up his room at the driver's dorm! Anyway after much waiting we departed, the bus was not that comfortable as I expected little cramped and smelled of stinking feet, arrived at the town 3am I tried to stay put but the driver push me away out of the bus, luckily there we taxis waiting and showed them the name of the hotel booked for me by ... read more
