I have not been writing much so I thought I would expand a bit...hope it is not to much... We ventured from Chaing Mai via minivan to the border town of Chaing Khong. There we stayed the night at a riverside guesthouse and handed in our passports so we would have Laos Visas in the morning for the ferry ride across the Mekong. There was not much to Chaing Khong save a few restaurants and guesthouses catering to the travelers coming and going to Laos. The next morning we, along with about 90 other travelers, took the small boats across the Mekong to Loas. We were all separated based on whether we were taking the SLOW or FAST boat to Luang Prabang. Tamar and I were slatted for a slow boat so we could enjoy the ... read more

After a 12 hour overnight bus ride we arrived in the most laid-back capital city ever - Ventiane. We did the walking tour suggested in the guidebook which covered most of the city and it took us just over half a day! The number of westerners here was also a bit of a shock to us after our trip down south. Several temples later we moved onto Vang Vieng - stunning scenery and outdoor sports galore! So beautiful we found it hard to leave. We are now in the UNESCO world-heritage listed town of Luang Prabrang, known as the 'jewel of south-east asia'. Further photos of this bit will follow shortly.... read more

Evening everyone, Well we are on day 23 and on the homeward stretch. But to keep you up to date since the last blog (Vang Vieng), we have traveled only a few hundred KM's, but it took us over 7 hours on a bus. Reason : Huge mountians pass to cross, it was amazing countryside, and the view just kept on getting better. See piccys The bus was much nicer than the previous bus we had caught to Vang Vieng, room to move on this one... it always nice when u can streach out on a bus, especially for an 7 hour journey. This road was tared, so at least that was a blessing, but it was quite thin and a very steep cliff face, but the bus got us here in one piece, was quite ... read more

Another bus trip awaits us. We have caught more buses on this holiday than I care to count. A foggy morning provides a beautiful sight as it crawls gently over the tips of the Vang Vieng mountains. It becomes obvious very quickly that the following 7 hours on the bus may well be very enjoyable. The mist engulfs the tall, staggering mountains. The sight off the long fall cliff is formidable. The constant slowing down to carefully plot a course over the fallen rock and debris is a reminder how dangerous driving on these wet mountains can be. We stop at a small restaurant for "lunch" (at 10:30am??? go figure) As I sit there trying to eat while ignoring the chickens and the cow, I think to myself "this is definatley the most bucolic restaurant I ... read more

We were soooo glad to finally arrive in Luang Prabang after the worst ten hours of our lives. The bus journey was pretty bumpy and I spent 9 of the ten hours with my head stuck in a bag, and Andrew, unusually, was quite ill as well. So with that experience behind us we decided to spend a couple of days lazing around in Luang Prabang before starting to see the sights. We had also decided to fly back to Vientiane before flying to Hanoi instead of the bus again, phew! This small town has become quite touristy, although still has wonderful charm and again, the people are welcoming and friendly. We got a nice guest house by the Mekong River for only 3 pounds a night so we decided to stay for a week. Life ... read more

Before we get bogged down in the usual travel 'blog' I think we have to clarify a point. It appears, because of the way the site is laid out (no offence ally), that we have an ambiguous title. Mark and his Bag was decided upon as a pun - Gill is the bag!! The front page reads 'Mark and his bag - Mark and Gill,. However we didn't realise that if you join half way that title doesn't appear, and does not clarify that this IS a joint site. This site is written by me - Mark - simply for continuity and ease but relies upon Gills diary, Gills proof reading/editing, and most of all Gills ability to spell. Be under no illusion - without these inputs this would be a far tattier and tedious site ... read more

The 6 a.m. Monk Procession At 6 a.m. the Novice Monks have a procession through the town where locals offer food to them, mainly being Sticky Rice and Chicken wrapped in leaves. It is quite a lovely sight to see these young men silently walking down the road and modestly taking the offerings of food. Don't make the mistake that I did, believing there were only a few monks: there is a whole procession that eventually make it to the offering. To this day one of the strangest things that i have done: believing I had missed the last offering and chasing a Monk up the street with a bag of sticky rice whilst wearing my pyjamas. As my first stop off in Laos I thought that it would be rude not to try the national ... read more

Again, I feel this is more of a photo story than a wordy one but you deserve a little spiel. The journey was one of attrition. It was two days on a boat - a slow one - and very little padding under arse. The two days of 7 or 8 hours a day were broken in two by a stay at a small villiage called Pakbeng which at first appeared quaint. I supose it was, although the standard of accommodation we were conned into was rough. Their first error was to tout rooms on the boat (after we'd paid for ours before leaving) at a cheaper rate than we'd paid - leave it we thought. Then we got to the pit, or room as they called it, and it was bad. Now I realise this ... read more

It all began very much like a Bruce Lee film should. A late afternoon sun was emerging, doing its best to protest the wet season. On a rustic wooden ferry, I stood silently at the bow, watching the turbid waters of the Mekong River race the storm clouds that were fleeing in a southerly direction above. Between the river and the sky, the banks of Laos held defiantly still as our vessel struggled to maintain a steady course. Uniformed officers waited on the shore, mirroring my posture and my silence until at 1630 on 29 August 2005, I stepped on Lao land for the first time in 28 years. Let's just say that the past five days have been amazing. In which i justify the title... Luang Prabang, the former Royal Lao capital has to be ... read more
