Hello again, I know it might seem soon for another email, and it is, but i have some catching up to do. So, i thought i'd start with a little bit of Laos talk. Like, what's the difference between Laos and Thailand? Is it different? Is it the same? All the answers and more, coming right up. So, Laos is poor, one of the poorest countries in the world. When i first arrived to Thailand, i thought it was a bit rough and basic, but in comparison to Laos, it is quite far advanced. Paved roads in Laos? Not so many. Luang prabang, yes (it was the old capital), and Vientiane, yes (it is the current capital), but in between and around, not so much. If they are paved, they were paved years and years ago ... read more

Meeting of the Mekong Have found another place to sit and reflect on the day, and yes once again it is beside the Mekong River very close to where it meets the Nam Khan River. The river itself is made of brown water, with a surface broken by currents and eddies and with breaks created by sandbars or small islands. Anyone familiar with the Burdekin will get the picture. Alongside this brown expanse are villages with clusters of huts (thatched roofs, seemingly rattan walls) and smoke rising from the clusters. Long boats are tethered at the river's sides, near neat rows of market gardens tended by villages. Women wash clothes in buckets by the river and evidence of their toil lines the fences, gates and trellis work surrounding the little plots of agriculture. The boats are ... read more

Tourist town with charm Luang Prabang, the former capital of Laos, is one with many beautiful architectural and cultural features. The French influence not withstanding, there are many temples here and respect for religion and art. Temples line the main streets and are locations of gilded adoration (of Buddha) as well as being the hub of each neighbourhood. Around this hub, the religious and social activities of the associated area are centred. Much beautiful decoration is evident here as well. Monks are all male, dressed in saffron-coloured robes and are varied in age from perhaps primary school to very old. I have been careful about my contact with them as a sign of respect. No touching. No direct eye-contact. However, if they approach - and a couple have, it is an opportunity for conversation and learning. ... read more

We met Jane & Adrian for breakfast at the lovely Luang Prabang bakery (good chocolate danishes but not as good as Vientiane's!). Then headed up Fousi mountain to see what we could see. It cost us 10,000 kip ($1) each which seemed steep but there were loads of things up there. Namely, a couple of wats, a buddha cave, buddha's foot print, many buddha statues including cross-eyed & fat-bellied. Unfortunately, there were also 2 stump-tailed macaques tied to some tree branches, for some unknown purpose. On our return to the main thoroughfare we decide to arrange a trip to the nearby waterfalls. This involved very amusing haggling between Luke, Ade & a minivan driver that ended up with us paying a "Special shhhhh secret price" where we couldn't tell anyone else on the trip how much ... read more

Sorry about our lack of communication over the last little while. Tara and I have spent the last 15 days in Laos and absolutely loved it! We would have stayed a lot longer if our visas hadn’t expired which meant we had to head into Cambodia. Laos was a dream country to visit; one of those places that you don’t really believe still exists in the world. Beautiful people, beautiful scenery and wonderful traveling companions made this one of the best experiences we could have ever asked for. I just wanted to let people know that we are still around and the details of our latest adventure will be posted shortly. Meanwhile, I have added some more pictures to our gallery…sabadee! ... read more

Today is Dec 6, 2005 morning. Our last entry was made on Nov 27, morning. That same night, we went to a cultural show presented by the children of Luang Prubang. It was sponsored by UNESCO. The show has about 10 programs, including children singing, dance, puppet shows and dramas. The music, dance and drama were all related to their lives and touched on violence, hygiene and immunization, harvest, meeting mates. It was refreshing to see some of the older children (about 17, 18) participate in the dramas and puppet shows. In other countries, they would have preferred to go to bars and karaoke. On Nov 28, we did not do much but rest. We did go to the Red Cross Massage clinic and had our lao oil massage. In the evening, we had a delicious ... read more

1.12. Presun do Laosu Tak dnes sa nam vdaka skvelemu Zuzkinmu planovaniu podaril riadne velky presun: Dostali sme sa na jeden sup z Thajska az do stredu Laosu. Vstali sme o piatej rano v Chang Rai, aby sme stihli skory autobus do Chiang Kongu, co je hranicne mesto medzi Thajskom a Laosom.

Hi all...here's our third installment on our travelblog and today my friends we'll be concentrating on our journey through Laos.....so get a coffee and a biscuit and sit back and enjoy the read!!!!! Before we could enter Laos, we had to stay overnight in Chiang Kong in North Eastern Thailand.....There’s not much to do there to be honest so all our mini bus went for drinks and Man Utd were playing Spurs so we had a few drinks and watched that and also played a bit of jenga (a great drinking game by the way)....All was going good until someone changed the TV channel and Edo (a fellow backpacker from Israel) started asking "where’s the football" and gesturing to the TV..... Of course Leanne, being the nice person she is and despite the few drinks she ... read more

Today is Nov 27, 2005. We are in Luang Prubang. On Nov 22, we took a bus from Mengla, Yunnan, China to Luang Namtha, Laos. The trip took a total of 6 hours, including the two immigration processes. The road north of the Chinese border is OK, but the road in Laos is terrible. Luang Namtha is a very small town, with one major street of about 500 meters. It is very quiet, very clean, and people are generally polite and soft spoken. We stayed at a guesthouse (for two nights) run by a Chinese family. The showers are powered by Solar Power. There is hardly any hot water for the first day, but sufficient for the second day. We met up with a French couple, Olivier & Ludienne and spent the next few days doing ... read more

There must be a word to describe the desire we feel for a place we have never been and only realize once we arrive. For our purposes this word is Laos. Laos was, if you’ll excuse a bit of shameless gushing reflection, love at first sight. Our journey into the country began with a two day (300 km) boat ride down the mighty Mekong, a slow moving cappuccino colored river that winds it way through Laos. The scenery made the long ride pass quickly; we were surrounded on all sides by luscious fertile forests interrupted only by rocky peaks and small villages. Stopping at the villages to load and unload cargo, animals, and people we had our first glimpse into the lives of the Lao people. Young children playing in the water, some with nets and ... read more
