After a two hour drive, another 2 hour four-wheel drive (through some VERY hairy bush terrain) and a 2 hour trek up a muddy vine-entangled, fern-covered mountain, Qua, Lee, Ben and myself found ourself well and truly in "Da Jungle"! And it was "Massif!" Thankfully having watched the 5 minute instruction video of the "Gibbon Experience" earlier, we kind of knew what to do when we were given a handful of harnesses, carabeenas and pulleys by our friendly Lao guide, and with a big smile, told to zip off on a series of flying foxes to the treehouse we would be staying in for the next 3 days. To be quite honest, I was a bit uncertain about paying the MaSSiF (almost as massif as de Jungle!) 1.5 million Kip (about $150-odd bucks) fee for ... read more

When did they send the pamphlets out telling everybody how many people live in their country? Im pretty sure it wasn't during school, although we did spend a lot of time wagging and going to 7-11 for slurpies. It definatly wasn't during orientation at any workplace we've ever worked at either. "The kettles over there, press 1 to dial an outside line and Australia has 21 million people". So how the hell does everyone in the world except us know how many people are from their city and country. When we where in Cambodia for instance a little Cambodian kid who was trying to sell us somthing said "where you from?" upon telling him from Australia he goes "G'day mate, capital Canberra, 21 million people" How the hell did HE get the pamphlet? We wouldnt have ... read more

Every action adventure needs a hero, and in Laos, a hero has been born. AC360 is an alter ego who’s middle name would be danger, if he had one (Ant Carr, all round action hero, to spell it out). We weren’t to know it, but we were about to embark on the most ludicrously adrenaline and adventure packed week possible. And it all began in Vang Vieng, a town where east meets west in a hideous, jarring way. Beautiful limestone cliffs and the most picture perfect images of Asia are accompanied by a Magaluf-style soundtrack of pissed up tourists, shocking music pounding out of giant speakers and TVs, with every restaurant in town churning out episodes of Friends and The Simpsons as if their lives depended on it. But Vang Vieng is also host to tons ... read more

Bokeo Reserve has proven to be a place that moves a lot... Let's start from the beginning then! As I mentioned to you before, I signed up for the Gibbon Experience, which is based in the Lao rain forest in the Bokeo Province (just across from the Thai border). The idea is that you trek through the jungle, clip yourself to a zip cord high above the trees and zip to the next base (just like in The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, promise!). Then, you trek some more and zip again and you keep on doing so until you reach your tree house. Our group turned out to be a complete melting pot: Brits, a Swede, a Dutchman, an American (west side rocks), a couple of Germans, French Canadians and a Pole of course. And there ... read more

Hello!! How are you all? Well I hope? I hear you had lovely bank holiday weather, so I hope you all took full advantage of it and now have tans to make me jealous (it's rainy season here again so wouldn't be hard!!) What have I been up to since I last wrote I hear you ask, well here goes....! I have spent the last month traveling through the beautiful country of Laos where the guest houses are run by crazy "mama's" who bustle into your room telling you EXACTLY where you should have put your backpack (and I always move it!) and prod you around to see how fat/thin tall/short you are - I felt a little like an auditionee for Hansel and Gretel!! Unlike Thailand, it really is the land of smiles - ... read more

We made it across the border, with no problems after Kirstyn's second hospital experience post monkey attack for another vaccine shot! Very relaxed border crossing, although this was our very first. We did however have some dramas trying to get enough cash (especially the US dollars - the banks didn't want to part with small denominations) for the next few weeks as Laos apparently has no ATM's except Vientiane. All this aside we arrived in Houay Xai a bit after lunch and attempted to find the Gibbon Experience in the hottest part of the day carrying all our gear! Unfortunately we had bogus directions so found a hotel and then found it later by simply asking someone - derr. At the Gibbon Experience office we had a very brief rundown and tutorial before signing an ... read more

I was lucky enough to try out the Gibbon Experience. This experience has nothing to do with Gibbons, although they will be heard and if your lucky seen. This experience challenged my fears, it opened up my eyes, it tested my nerves, it taught my things about myself that I never knew. Sounds great, right? Oh Yeah, and here is why. This year my girlfriend (Ning) and I decided to get "real loco" and head to the Gibbon Experience. For those of you who don't know what a Gibbon is, it is a big monkey with real long arms. They love to swing from branches, while singing a melody with a very unique tune. The black Gibbon was thought to be extinct until they were found in the Bokeo Forest, in Laos. Wow! What an ... read more
