Hands down, this was one of the most interesting and exciting three days I have ever had. The Gibbon Experience is a conservation project in the Bokeo province in northern Laos. A French man had the ingenious idea of presenting his vision to the local people of the area as a lucrative business (not a charity) that benefits animal, plant and human alike. They have built five tree houses and an extensive network of zip cables all located in the tree canopies some 200 meters above the ground. Not for those cursed with vertigo! The Gibbon Experience has catapulted in popularity in the past couple years in South East Asia. There is often a waiting list of two weeks or more to be one of the lucky few who fill the sparse 12 available spaces. ... read more

Mat: Named after the primates whose calls wake you in the morning, the Gibbon Experience is a locally-owned eco-tourism project whose character and activities put it a league above all other tourist attractions on offer around Southeast Asia. A Frenchman dreamt up this novel concept for conservation - create incredible treehouses in the middle of pristine jungle and connect them with huge ziplines. Then let tourists loose on the area for three days at a time - no itinerary, just hang out in the 50m-high treehouses, zip above and through the jungle, or explore the jungle by foot. If tourists are flocking to the area for an amazing childhood dream of an experience in the trees of the Bokeo jungle, and the project is environmentally and socially sustainable, then in this country of marginal environmental protection, ... read more

The Gibbons Experience! This is possibly the most amazing thing we've ever done. We we're only in the jungle for two nights but we could have stayed for weeks. We arrived at a small village in the mountains by jeep and then continued on foot to a jungle camp. Once there, we were given a harness to put on. After playing for a good while with the pet monkies and rescued baby bear we headed further into the forest. One tree we came to had a large steel cable tied to it. Our guides then told us to attach our harness to the cable and jump off the wooden platform. As you glide along the cable, the jungle wizzes past you and then suddenly falls away beneath you! You're cruising above the canopy when you ... read more

Check out my video at the top of the page (thing that looks like a film strip) Sun 18th Feb Time for the Gibbon Experience and the reason I spent 2 days on the boat. This was recommended to me by Pete-Thanks and I have stolen a bit of his blog to explain what it is. (http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Laos/Bokeo-Province/Bokeo-Nature-Reserve/The-Gibbon-Experience/blog-86115.html) Ok, I'll start off by giving you a little background on The Gibbon Experience as an project. It is set in the Bokeo Nature Reserve. The reserve is located around 3 hours by car north of Huay Xai very close to the Burmese border. It is 153,000 hectares of dense jungle and mountains ranging in height between 500m and 1,500m. The reserve acts as a home to thousands of species of wildlife, including tigers, bears, black gibbons and also ... read more

“I am travelling through South-East Asia for four weeks” “Cool” “… with my Mum.” “…………..are you having a good time?!?” Yep, in deeed, you people who have doubtfully been asking me those question, (I am not referring to the ones who were still interested in talking to me!) don’t have a f****** clue what you’re missing out on! Of course travelling is about exploring all these beauties in the world, meeting people, living without restrictions and responsibilities, feeling free and being far away from the restricting daily life….and all this seems contradictory to taking your Mum along (impersonating all those things you are fleeing from). It started off a little different for me as I hadn’t seen mine for more than 4 months and was looking forward to see her. (Although the thought of 4 weeks ... read more

Next stop after Luang Nam Tha was the Gibbon Experience, however to get there we had to travel three quarters of the way to the Lao-Thai Border and stay in a village called Ban Don Chai - sounds easy. We all arrived at the LNT bus station nice and early (we saw some monks collecting alms so it really was early!), we were the first ones to buy tickets for our bus so we relaxed and got some breakfast. After seeing the bus we tried to load our bags on only to be told that we weren't going to be on this nice comfortable looking bus but that one over there which looked distinctly less uncomfortable - but it would do. I popped off to the bank (which took about 45 minutes to withdraw some money) ... read more

Well me and linda thought we would take the easy way and join a group to cross the border into laos. It all started off ok with a nice bus to the border, where we then got our visas. Well, as we crossed the border we realized that we had been charged an extra 15 dollars for our visa than we had to pay an additional fee because it was after hours to crossing the borders. We cross and get briefed onto our plans for crossing the border. There were no atms in town so we were forced to exchange money through the travel company, at a very low rate. We were also told we could exchange money at the border. Luckily some vey nice british girl loaned us money otherwise me and linda would have been ... read more

The town you come to when you enter Laos from Chiang Kong, Thailand is Huay Xai. Huay Xai is nothing more than a half mile of crude wood and concrete buildings slouched on the east shore of the Mekong river at the bottom of a hill. Most of these buildings are budget hotels or general stores selling shampoo, potato chips and cola, with two or three tourist shops sprinkled around at the center. It might seem a poor introduction to Laos, as the cities that followed were almost all more charming than this one; however, this is exactly the reason that Laos proved to be such an amiable place - it possesses the unique quality of being utterly devoid of pretense. I would say that over 30,000 travelers enter Laos through here, yet there is scarcely ... read more

One of the things I love about backpacking is the absence of planning, you can pretty much decide whatever you want to by each day and can happily rely on recommendations by all the fellow travellers you meet. One recommendation that was constantly recurring with gusto was this thing called 'The Gibbon Experience' in northern Laos. This is the brainchild of a european who set up the projest as a way to protect the rainforest from poaching and logging which was very prevalent here. The idea is that you go and live in treehouses 'flying' through and above the forest on a series of zip lines in search of the black gibbon monkey - once thought extinct untill they were rediscovered in 1997 (dont say you dont learn anything on this blog). The reality is that ... read more
