Magnificent scenery is what awaits us at Djety Oguz, the valleys are spectacular, we crossed many log bridges and have to stop and get off and try to take away sharp rocks out of Gisele's way, this so far is the most magnificent place I have been on Kyrgyzstan. We looked for an ideal camp site and pitched our tents. The cook groups started preparing meals, we had a gorgeous steak meal with potatoes, thanks to Bev, Angus and Kit, while me and Geoff decided to hike some hill directly in front of our camp across a river, we have to go around and cross a bridge 1 km from campsite as it is too dangerous to wade and cross it, the currents are pretty strong and besides the water is freezing. The view from ... read more

We are staying at homestays again and we got divided up into three, after dinner we were serenaded with local music by our gracious hosts, beautiful music and skillful playing. I bought a quilt carpet at the felt factory we went to , the lady demonstrated how to make the felt rugs as well and she made one whose design is the likeness of Gisele our truck. We had a quick lunch afterwards and then shopped for dinner cooking, we drove not far and we reached our camp site on the shores of Issyk Kol, it's a big lake and we will camp on different areas of it as we got around in a loop til we hit Bishkek in a couple days. Our campsite was gorgeous, i cooked the adobo but not really successful. It ... read more

ALA BEL PASS at approx. 3184 meters, i was expecting to get sick due to altitude but was surprised to find out I was fine, I hope this bode well for me as we get higher in altitude by the time we cross China via Torugart Pass which is much higher. We camped in a valley surrounded by high mountains next to a river I believe it is the Sausamyr river, Clive and Tommie our guide decided to run up the mountain, I wanted to join them but decided to just go up the road for a run as I am worried of the altitude, we are camped at 2000 plus meters. I was exhausted for only a 45 minute run but felt good as I don't get much exercise in this trip. I got ... read more

Before the Kyrgyz side we have about 2 hours wait to get out of Uzbekistan because we had a minor problem with the truck, i believe from what i heard, the truck's carnet did not have the stamp from when it re entered Uzbekistan from Tajikistan, so lot of waiting and finally they let us through, all the while we are bundled up in a small cubicle huddled as it was raining and cold, when we got to Kyrgyz border there was no power so we have to wait awhile again to get processed, eventually we made it in and met our Kyrgyz guide Tommie, we drove to Osh where we stayed at a homestay, 2 houses for all of us, there was still no power when we walked the street to get dinner, rainy ... read more

We have spent the last 3 weeks loving Kyrgyzstan. We are now back in Osh, where we wrote the last blog, after a trip covering some of the most beautiful spots in this country. Osh is the southern capital and is heavily influenced by the large Uzbek population who live here. Ramadan has been an interesting time to be here, with the Mosques busy and people observing the fasting. Kyrgyzstan attracts a small but growing number of travellers, and we soon hooked up with a few like-minded people to explore. Our first stop was the appropriately named Arslanbob (see below). This small Uzbek village in the heart of the Fergana Valley, was 3 eventful bus journeys away from Osh, passing through Jalalabad, and Bazaar Korgan. One of the bus conductors regailed us with stories of his ... read more

Well despite it seeming like an age ago we will start where the last one left off. We did indeed go to see our newly emmigrated friend Wendy in Rayong, Thailand. We had a great time enjoying her luxurious pad, bath, TV, Kitchen, Air-con, Swimming Pool etc. We met up with her new colleagues and got involved in a lot of the introductory events and banter - so much so that I think some people thought that we were actually going to be teaching at the school, and may even now be wondering where we are and why we are not attending staff meetings!!! Everyone seemed great and we liked the lifestyle but soon had to pack up our bags and hit the road again (Jack). We could not face the windy overland journey back to ... read more

Where the hell is Kyrgyzstan? “Where the hell is Kyrgyzstan?” That’s what a mate asked me in the travel literature section of Borders last year. The guy who asked me this is a well-informed, well-read Joint Honours graduate (for the Strathclyde-grads contingent, the guy was Michael Collins). He was by no means the only person who gave me a blank look when I said I’d be travelling through Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is the MAN Kyrgyzstan is a relatively small, landlocked former Soviet republic in Central Asia. It has the population of Scotland. It’s also an intriguing mix of peoples, languages and ideas. Our seemingly endless car journeys here have shown that this is a country of astounding natural beauty. Most of the local people we’ve met in Kyrgyzstan (excluding shared-car ‘taxi’ drivers, who are subhuman, money-grabbing scum!) ... read more

We are in Kyrgyzstan. At last. Since I last wrote, we have spent a night in a Kyrgyz yurt on the banks of the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. We also went on a scenic, mountainous bus trip to the Pakistani border. We saw awe-inspiring mountains (some over 7,000 metres) and drunk tea in the middle of a field near Tajikistan with Chinese, Tajik and Pakistani guys. Words cannot do it justice, but here goes… Lake Karakol is out of this world. We spent barely 24 hours there, but I will never forget the serene beauty of the place. We travelled there with Spencer, an American PhD student we met in Urumqi. He speaks fluent Chinese and bears an uncanny resemblance to Zach Braff (Garden State, Scrubs - check out the photos and decide ... read more

After a stupendous couple of weeks in the more remote regions of what is by any standards a pretty remote country, Kyrgyzstan, we're now back in the southern capital of Osh getting ready to cross into China via the Irkeshtam pass. When I say getting ready all I really mean is finishing this asap so we can get some sleep b4 the taxi arrives at 2 tomorrow morning. A tad expensive though as we couldn't find anyone to share costs with. Anyone fancy a trip to China tomorrow? Just turn up at the Taj Mahal hotel. The Kyrghz border closing at 11am on a Friday explains the ungodly hour of departure, that and the fact that the 270 odd km trip will take about 8 hours. If we can keep our eyes open though we should ... read more

Hi, I'm posting these travel updates a bit out of order and late. A friend of mine suggested that I post my email updates onto this site becasue readers might get a kick out of them. I was in Kyrgystan a few months ago, so keep in mind that this post is a few months out of date. ===== img=http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&conn_speed=1&Uc=10ivsqdd.23e3t0il&Uy=-mt62b3&Ux=1 Zdrastvuyte, Well I made it to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Unfortunately it was neither on the day I planned nor the airline I planned, but I did make it here. (Although, a week later than expected.) After I sent my last email from Delhi I went to the airport 3 hours ahead of schedule like a good little tourist. At first things were fine. I saw the flight to Bishkek up on the board as expected. After an ... read more
