In july, Brad Mcmillon and I set off for the Ak-Su valley of the Karavshin region of southwest Kyrgyzstan. The place has fantastic huge granite big-walls and we were one of the first americans to visit since the 2000 hostage crisis involving four North Face expedition members. This region is one of the most remote and unspoilt areas I have ever visited and while we found confounding weather conditions we still managed to enjoy the surroundings and the friendliness of the local people. Kyrgyz pastoralists take to the high mountain pastures in the summer and while not crowded, it was impossible to walk by a yurt without being invited in for tea, bread and some kind of yogurt variant. We were at basecamp in Ak-Su for only about 16 days, (too short in my opinion) and ... read more

Ok, so I'm not actually in Issyk Kul, but it is the only place in Kyrgyzstan that the Travelblog lists, I felt like I should list it as where I am at least once. And I was there for 9 days and I would have added to the blog had I not been in the least frequented area of Issyk Kul, the very small town of Tamchy. It was probably chosen as the place for the American School camp because it is much cheaper than any other town on the lake. It's beautiful! It's somewhere over 6000 feet above sea level and surrounded by mountains. Unfortunately I didn't get out and about very much. I was teaching English at the camp for two hours every morning, and then spent time at the beach or watching a ... read more

And another week... Very busy, as usual, and in general a good week. I met with more women from more NGOs and now have a huge list of people to call. I'm getting tons of information, but feel like I have no clue what I'll do with it all! Ah well, I guess I'll figure it out back in Colorado... So. The first few pics are from a party that one of my Russian students, Tanya, invited me to. It's the first time I've been in a Russian home (having only really met Kyrgyz people), and it was very different. The pictures are from a small arbor-type place in the (side?) yard, and they, like the Kyrgyz, have a lot of gardens. The house has storeys, which is something I haven't seen in Kyrgyz houses. ... read more

On Saturday Nazgul, myself and Azamat, Nazgul's brother-in-law's brother, spent the afternoon walking around Ala Archa National Park. It's lovely, not that far from Bishkek, and a favourite place for tourists (saw lots of climbers and other foreigners) and Kyrgyz and Russian families wanting to escape the heat. It was absolutely gorgeous, and if all of my weekends let me go to places like this, I will pretty much only live for weekends. So here are some of the pics :) ... read more

Hello everyone! Happy belated Canada Day to all and happy early Fourth of July to sundry :) I did nothing for Canada Day, which is very sad, but I did tell everyone I know that it was Canada's national day and made their lives that much better for the information. So, I have been here a week and a half. The culture shock is finally finished with (no crazy emotional roller coasters at the moment), although I still miss home etc. But I am now able to generally find my way around the city and am enjoying the food and all the new experiences, so that's good. I'm going to do 2 posts today because I have lots of pictures, and because Ala Archa National Park really deserves its own post. So, to catch up. I ... read more

Hello all. I'm sitting in another, cheaper internet cafe (although the difference between 50 and 55 cents is minimal) while I wait to meet with someone from the American School who will get me set up teaching English. Given that I'm not certified, hopefully he'll accept me as a native speaker who is currently in grad school; if not, I'm sure that I'll find some other way to fill my days. So, plenty of stuff to catch up on. I am including the rest of the pictures from Europe in this one. First off, there's Tiphaine and myself enjoying the beautiful Rouen sun (yes, it does come out sometime), and then the whole family (once we figured out how to work the delay on my camera). The last picture from France is of Amelie in her ... read more

Hello there! Just to let everyone who was worried know that I arrived in Bishkek completely safely, with no trouble at all. The taxi driver who got me from Almaty was even kind enough to take me home to his wife for tea before driving me to Bishkek; I must have looked absolutely exhausted at 5 am! Anyways, will post pics soon (I do have a few), but Nazgul, the woman who is renting me a room, is waiting outside and I probably shouldn't keep her long. Bishkek is lovely and safe and everyone is very kind. I am, however, dealing with culture shock (quite difficult, actually) and am fairly emotional at the moment. I forgot how hard that is, esp in such a completely different environment. And I now completely understand the tradition of praying ... read more

Left Bishkek where we lost Noel and Nigel, they will be sorely missed! 6 new people came on , all guys, drove back to Kochkor to break the long travel towards the Chinese border. We stayed in the same homestays it was really cold and miserable, it rained a bit. We had dinner outside, very chilly, i can't wait for some fine weather to appear. The next day we drove to some of the most beautiful scenery I have seen on this country so far, the Tian Shan Range is just awesome, went through the Dolon Pass in a small town called Naryn, then at the outskirts of the town a place called At-Bashy we stopped for lunch, gorgeous hills of different colors, green meadows, horses and sheeps everywhere. We drove and follow the Tian ... read more

Near the town of Cholpon Ata lies some ancient petroglyphs right next to the runway of former airport built during Soviet times and is apparently not operating. Not really that fascinating but since were there we stopped by to look. Then drove to a resort complex on the shores of Issyk Kol lake called Raduga in the small village of Sary-Oi, it is off season and the weather is crap, cloudy and rain in the forecast, it seems like we're the only people in the resort. We stayed the night here and was served plov and salads for dinner but can't ask for a second serving coz their food is quite limited which pissed off a number of people but we are far away from the town we cant really get out to eat out. ... read more
