Yup, last night in Kyrgyzstan :) I'd add a few more pics, but the computers are acting up a bit. Just wanted to say that anyone in Canada who has recently moved and for whom I do not have a current phone number, please e-mail it to me! I'll be back from the 31st of August till September 7th, and I'd really like to see whoever I can. Must go finish packing etc, am looking forward to hitting Europe again and then getting back home!... read more

KYRGYZSTAN - (June / July 2007) - Friday 29th June to Thursday 5th July - - (Kashgar to Osh) - No one seemed to know which days, or how often the bus went from Kashgar to Kyrgyzstan. Everyone was certain that it went on a Monday, which didn't really suit my timetable, but other than Monday everyone had a different opinion, maybe Wednesday, Thursday, or perhaps Monday Wednesday and Friday - who knows!! So it was off to the long distance bus station to try and find out. However, when I got there -‘Foreign Bus counter closed’. A lady at the Chinese long distance bus counter didn't know anything about the bus to Kyrgyzstan but managed to tell me in broken English that the foreign bus counter would open in 20 minutes. After 30 minutes still ... read more

KARAKOL, KYRGYZSTAN - (July 2007) Fri 6th - Sun 15th July 2007 - (Karakol) After several days hanging around in Bishkek waiting for my Tajikistan visa to be processed, I decided to go to a town called Karakol which is located at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul. Lake Issyk-Kul which is set amongst the central Tian Shan mountain range is 170km long by 70 km across and is supposedly the second largest Alpine lake in the world after Lake Titicaca. During Soviet times, several health spa towns sprang up along the lake's shore and the lake is reputed to be one of Kyrgyzstan's premier tourist destinations because of the spa towns, and also because of surrounding mountains which are said to have some wonderful trekking opportunities. The journey from Bishkek to Karakol took most of ... read more

When the Russians had Kyrgyzstan as part of the USSR, they made a lot of use out of this lake called Izzyk Kul. It means 'hot lake,' but it would be more accurate to call it, 'really, really big hot lake.' It is the second largest alpine lake in the world (second to Lake Titikaka). So back in the day, the Soviets vacationed here and tested their submarine missles. Through the kindness of strangers, we found the bus to Karakol and made the trip down in 6 1/2 hours with a Kyrgyz 'truck stop' along the way. We tried a few guest houses in town before we found one that worked... It seems that our lack of Russian makes us less desirable to a few folks. A strange sense of customer service.... we ignore you, and ... read more

Hello! I got back from visiting Naryn yesterday, a lovely city nestled in the mountains in kind of the middle of the country. The weather was refreshing and cool, such a change from Bishkek, where I was completely unable to sleep last week because it was just SO HOT! But now that I'm back, for some reason, the weather smells like fall and there's a bit of a breeze, for which I am incredibly grateful. Anyways, to start. The first picture is of the Museum of Fine Arts, a very interesting building filled with a lot of wonderful modern art, but whose presentation could maybe use a little work. The labels are just computer-typed cut-outs taped to the wall or to the frame, and unfortunately no pictures are allowed at all :( Ah well, I enjoyed ... read more

Bussis und lg an alle Erika & Roland ... read more

Hello everyone :) Hope all is well. I have now exactly 2 weeks until I fly out (less, if we're counting hours) and am really looking forward to it. So. I had a great time last week, and the first picture shows a fantastic honeydew melon being held by a friend of mine, Ainura. To be perfectly honest, I don't love honeydew. It isn't bad, but I'd rather have cantaloupe. NOT HERE!!! These things are amazing - so sweet and you can really taste the honey if you get a good one, and honeydew will never taste the same again. Sorry, but it really deserved an ovation. Next, you have me getting real home remedies a la Kyrgyz. I had a pretty bad cold after getting back from Issyk Kul, and Nazgul and Damira (in the ... read more

So after a few weeks in Omaha, I've bought all kinds of stuff... I heard from Philippe just before leaving, so I got a list of things to bring/leave behind. Everything seems small, expensive, and somehow it will become invaluable. My super-cute Grandma is watching incredulously as I unpack prescription drugs, camelback mouthpieces, and backpack covers. I enjoy explaining how all of these things will come into play in the coming weeks and months, and Grandma tries her best to act like it all makes sense to her. Flying halfway around the world.... it takes awhile. The actual flying time was about 24 hours, with a day layover in Denver, a couple of hours in London, and a few minutes in Tblisi (Georgia... the country, not the state). The flight pulled up in Bishkek at about ... read more
