Shirakabe Dozogun is the historic, traditional part of town that is nationally recognized for its cultural value. It has a really really relaxed atmosphere, and in a way you can imagine life 40 or 50 years ago. Kurayoshi doesn't have much in "nightlife" department, but there are lots of things to do during the day. For anyone visiting Tottori-prefecture, Shirakabe Dozogun is a must see. ... read more

The other day I was lucky enough to get to enjoy a meal prepared by the famous 知久馬先生 at the Ohashi Ryokan (大橋旅館)。(Chikuma). There were a ton of dishes served, and each one was better than the last. Mr. Chikuma himself is a cool dude. I had met him at a conference a few months earlier, and he certainly did not fail his reputation. Tottori is known for its famous seafood, and when I go home I am going to miss it a lot. Any time I go out for sushi I can rest assured that it was caught that morning, and you can REALLY taste the difference. Misasa, the town where Ohashi Ryokan is located, is a hot spring town that attracts a good deal of domestic tourists from the Kansai area. It's spring waters ... read more

In many parts of the West we say "April showers bring May flowers", however in Japan that saying does not apply. In Japan spring arrives in April, and the showers come later in June. In Japanese this rainy season is called ”梅雨” tsuyu. Here in the Kurayoshi area, there are many pear trees, as pears are one of the 名物 (famous things) of the area. And they really look incredible. I wanted to get out on a sunny day but the weather kind of prevented that from happening. Whats really cool are the all-you-can-eat pear farms they have. For about 800 yen ($9) you can eat so many delicious pears that you wont be able to move. ... read more

I've realized that I only have a little over a month until my time in Japan is over...so I've been keeping insanely busy with extra-curriculars and not enough time packing. Don't worry, Mom, I'll make it work! What have I been doing?? Here's the rundown: I performed and competed in our local "talent"/karaoke contest that's held every year called Tottori Idol (a take off on the original Pop Idol show). A couple friends and I performed the song called "Shuchishin", it was popular here in Japan last year? We memorized the lyrics in Japanese and the dance too! We even got custom shirts made. We won 2nd place which was a ticket to the annual San-In Beach Party. We're splitting it so it comes down to 2000 yen off per person per ticket we buy! Not ... read more

It was the last time I would be part of the English Speech competition...I was partly happy, nervous, and excited! All the practicing paid off though! One of my students from one school got a runner-up prize for his recitation and another student from my other school got the FIRST PRIZE for his recitation. Of course the students did a lot of work, but I have to say, I did a pretty good job choosing the first prize winner to do the contest. I usually make my suggestion to my co-workers a few months before the contest. Personality comes first and not English ability when it comes to choosing the students. Of course it helps when they WANT to be part of the contest and enjoy learning English. I felt like a proud parent almost when ... read more

Shirakawa Village was listed as one of TheWorld Heritage at the 19th UNESCO that is held in Berlin on December 1995. This was the 6th World Heritage that Japan Heritage in Japan. The village was being preserved hundreds of years and because it was preserved so well so the UN put it in the list of The World Heritage. And guess what, I did acutally went to see the village, to acknowledge the life style of Japanese hundreds of years ago and the difference between now and then. When I first arrive at the village I didn't see any difference between the houses in the city and the Shirakawa Village. But when i look closer, i found out that the roofs were different. The houses in the Shirakawa Village has roofs made by straws! STRAWS~ yes ... read more

A darkening sky and regular rain showers was not the start to the long weekend that I was hoping for. Never mind, hopefully it will keep a few people at home I thought. The plan was to meet my friend in Matsue and head up the coast to check out beaches and the Tottori Sand Dunes. When pouring rain began to give way to small patches of pale blue we knew we'd made the right decision by pushing on. After stopping to watch the sunset from a rocky bay, which I'm sure does have an actual name, we headed further up to find a place to stop for the night. We'd both packed sleeping bags and figured we'd just crash on a beach somewhere. No set time schedule, very much a play-it-by-ear getaway - the kind ... read more

I can hardly believe that in just 3 weeks, I will be packing my bags and saying Sayonara to the San-In coast, which I have come to know so well. At the end of July, I will travel to the touristy Kansai region and spend two weeks cycling around Lake Biwa and Nara before I leave for Shanghai on August 15th. I will never forget the people I've met and the friends I have made during the past year. I've met an array of foreigners from all corners of the world, who share the same adventurous spirit as myself. And so, I haven't just learned about Japan, but I have come away with a greater understanding of the UK, Oceana, South Africa, and the Caribbean. As a result, I have studied Maori dance, practiced Kendo and ... read more
