Hi everyone! We are currently in Michigan now....just relaxing and waiting for our VISA numbers before heading over to S. Korea. We're not exactly sure of the date that we leave now, as this whole VISA process is taking a lot longer than expected, but we'll be sure to let everyone know as soon as we know! In the meantime, here are our last couple of blogs from Japan that we've been delaying... Enjoy! These pictures are from one of our last days in Japan, when we spent the day in Shibuya. We headed over later in the afternoon, and after enjoying a conveyor-belt sushi lunch and spending a few hours in a "love hotel," we met up with some of our friends for dinner. We had been highly anticipating this dinner, as we were going ... read more

Everyone seemed to like the baby with the forks picture. Cant really top that, but here are some other lovely photos I hope you will enjoy. And yes, as some of you know, I do drink alcohol. So do the Japanese. Don't say I didn't warn you. PS -- sorry the squid movie is sideways. tip your computer screen. Try and watch it with the sound on if you can, its much funnier. Our last full day in Tokyo and we have saved our most anticipated district for last. Akihabara is Tokyo's electronic district, where you can find anything and everything and even more for cheap low prices. Models of cameras that aren't even released yet in North America, discounted computers, video games galore, and dvd after dvd after dvd. One of the first stores we went into had my camera, the new one I just bought before we left, for almost half the price I paid! Dev's eye's were the size of saucers and he had this "kid in a candy store" look on his face the entire afternoon. The highlight was the Nintendo store (www.superpotato.com I have no idea what the potato has to do with anything!) which was 2 floors and carried every single Nintendo game ... read more

Enjoy!... read more

First off, it was hot yesterday. Definitely the hottest day that we have experienced in Japan so far. It is so hot here that one of the marketing techniques is to print your ad on a fan. Seriously, it’s so sweet cuz then you can walk around fanning yourself all day. Relief!! After all the hype to go see the Harajuku district, yesterday was finally the day. To make a long story short, Harajuku is essentially the home of Japanese youth counter culture. Teens get all dressed up to come out to the Jingu-bashi (a small square) that sits right in front of the beautiful Meiji-jingu park (more on that later) to express themselves in a form that is otherwise not very accepted by traditional Japanese society. These kids certainly did not disappoint one bit. The ... read more

Dizzy and Milky was a phrase we spotted on a childrens’s shirt in a department store. I’m not even going to try and decipher what it is supposed to mean. Well. Our first full day in Tokyo. We have a LOT to type. I guess the jet lag was affecting us a bit last night, because we were up until 3am and we finally had to force ourselves to go to sleep. 7am came though and I was up ready to hit this amazing city. We started out by walking towards the Senso-ji Temple which is about 15 minutes from our Guesthouse. The street leading to the temple is a shopping street filled with vendors selling everything from cellphone charms to dog clothes, chopsticks with your name on them (unfortunately it’s all in Japanese so I ... read more

The title of our blog is a phrase that we saw on a girl's purse on the subway. It was a pretty large green plaid bag, and the writing was completely covering one side of it in yellow. I guess it makes sense, but why you would want that on your purse, and what exactly she's looking for I'm not sure...haha. Our flights were rather uneventful. In a weird coincidence the same group that we shared a table with at Japanese Village was on our flight to Los Angeles. The woman had a wedding dress with her, so they must have been flying somewhere to get married. Funny how things work like that. We ate Burger King in the LA Airport and then caught a bus and transferred to the International Terminal where we witnessed a ... read more

Trains that run on time 03-04/08/06 We decide to head out to Nikko to see the shrines, then on to Sendai where another old PhD friend of Vernon's lives (magneticists, they get everywhere!). So we leave the bikes in the bike park under Ueno Station, having checked with the attendant that they'll be okay until Sunday, at least we think that's what we asked. The excess bags go in a locker and we take a tube to Asakusa, where we buy tickets to Nikko, the train will leave platform 3 at 4.05pm, and it does, exactly, not 4.05 and 30 seconds or 4.06, bang on the dot of 4.05 we pull out of the station. We arrive at Nikko bang on time and get a taxi to the ryokan, once again we're in a Japanese style ... read more

Howdy everyone, This day was quite an adventure, as you will soon see...as we fit a whole lot of events into this one, single day! On this day we got an early start so that we could head out to the infamous Nokogiri-Yama. Nokogiri-Yama is an area atop a mountain located in Japan's countryside, a couple hours away from central Tokyo. Unfortunately we were a little pressed for time here, since we had already made reservations to go to a drag show later that evening with some friends, but luckily we still got to see everything that we had wanted to see there! After riding the train for what seemed like half the day, we finally reached the stop that we needed to go to Nokogiri-Yama. Once getting off the train, we had to walk for ... read more
