We left early on Thursday morning for Kamakura by train. We arrived in Kamakura after about two hours and three transfers.....It was a beautiful day...sunny and warm, but not too hot. We walked from temple to temple, along with crowds of school kids, older Japanese tourists and a very few "gaijin" (foreigners). We have seen so few non-Japanese here (except for on the base of course), that it almost feels like Kenya, without the scaring of small children! We went all day Friday without seeing one foreigner, until we got near to Matt's apartment. The roads were lined with shops and restaurants, but the temple grounds were peaceful and immense, with many old trees. The exception was the Shinto Temple we visited, where the crowds were noisy and and there were stands inside the grounds selling ... read more

I found myself becoming filled with a childlike enthusiasm as I sat on the train to Izukyu Shimoda and watched the coastline whiz by the window as I was off to the beach. My accommodation was a place called Ernest House (named after Ernest Hemingway) and it was a very laid back lodging only a minute away from Kisami- Ohama beach. The staff were very laid back and were not hung up on timings and rules, more that you just enjoy your stay how you want. Breakfast was served in quite an unorthodox way, at around 8am a hamper filled with breakfast goodies was left outside your door for you to collect when you wanted and eat when and where you wanted. It was a nice change of pace and it felt like a mini beach ... read more

Mt Fuji The season was drawing in on us for our opportunity to climb Mt Fuji, by the time we heading back this way. Only the stupid would climb it, but we wanted to at least see it. So we booked ourselves on the train from Kyoto to Mt Fuji, for one night only, as we were struggling for time to do everything we wanted and we had not even been to Tokyo yet, we had less than a week to go before our flight to Sydney. We constantly checked the weather praying for a good day for our only day at the mountain. We stayed in a lovely hostel that was empty. We headed to the supermarket to get our lunch, the town was small and very tiny. Nobody was about and only a handful ... read more

The trip was started from Nagoya, center of Japan, on 28/08/2010. We caught JR with "a Seishun Juhachi Kippu" at Kanayama station at noon and arrived at Fuji station in the afternoon on the same day. After walking about 10minute to catch bus at Shin-Fuji station, we relaxed some minutes and then took the bus from the station to Fujinomiya Fifth station (go-gome). It took some hours and we arrived the Fifth station at 20:20pm, 28/08/2010. Climbing Fuji was surely a very, very nice memory. The way up with high slope, fine and coarse gravels. This climber is followed by another. In the night, it was very cold but we did not felt because of energy burning from climbing. Although the atmosphere was covered by many dusts, it was clearly seen the expectancy touching the top of ... read more

I've delayed writing this post for over a year, because it took that long before I could think of this mountain without a sense of aversion and dread. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but after the experience I had I think it's safe to say this is something I will only do ONCE in my entire life. Where to start... My good friend from home was visiting and on a whim we had decided that we would hike Mt. Fuji together. We figured it would be fun, exciting, and at the very least something cool that we could do together during her stay. We went into this venture well prepared. We'd made a list of everything we would need - food, lots of water, hats, flashlights, gloves, oxygen, mitts, change of clothes, rain ponchos, emergency medical supplies, sun ... read more

This is the second of a three-part series on our Japan adventure. Part 1 is dedicated to highlights of our time in Tokyo and Part 3 describes our two-day trip to Hakone. After our first full day of sightseeing in Tokyo we had a satisfying dinner at a Thai restaurant. Jeff is vegetarian, and unfortunately we had problems communicating this in Japanese restaurants so far on our trip, so we went to a Thai restaurant where I could order vegetarian food in Thai for him. With our bellies full, we went to the bus station next to Shinjuku Station and got onto a bus headed to Mt Fuji's fifth station. There are a total of nine stations on the trails leading up to the summit of Mt Fuji. Most hikers take a bus to the fifth ... read more

Since Japan is so expensive ($350 one-way to Kyoto by train) our plan was to just stay in Tokyo until we found this couch surfer -Mochan- who was doing a Sakura (Cherry Blossom Festival) tour of Japan. All we had to do was split the gas money. So we went to Mochan’s house in a city close to Fuji mountain, just outside of Tokyo. He is a really generous man and we stayed with him for free and he cooked us dinner and fed us breakfast. He inherited his father’s house which was a traditional style home with paper walls, sliding doors, tatami mats to sit on and a low table to eat around. Tim, who is a photographer from England, was also staying with Mochan. He is a really funny guy and we became good ... read more

Fuji Hike by the Numbers: a) Elevation at summit is 3,776 m/12,388 ft. b) Yoshida Daguchi Trail vertical climb is ~3,000 m/9,800 ft. One-way distance is 19 km/12 mi. c) 38 km/24 mi over 1.5 days. 16 km/10 mi day 1. 22 km/14 mi day 2. d) 8.75 hiking hours to summit (excludes lunch and overnight at Station 7). e) 7.75 hiking hours to descend (includes 1 hr for "exploring" a side trail). f) 16.5 total hiking hours punishing my feet. As the Asia travel itinerary was and is a loosely based plan on places to visit, I knew Mt Fuji would come into play in some shape or form. After reading more about Fuji, I learned that there are a few routes in which to reach the summit. The most popular route is taking a ... read more

We are leaving Kawaguchiko station with the first bus going to Mt. Fuji 5th Station at 9:40AM. It's already quite late since the regular season is just over (ends on August 31st). For the same reason, the last bus leaves rather early too, so we cannot go up and return on the same day, which means we have to stay on the mountain. Weather and mood are good, so we start to climb up aby 11AM. The trail starts gently and there are many many mostly young Japanese people on the track. After about one hour we have a first rest, talking to some monks sitting in the morning sun and smoking cigarettes (funny, ain't it?). They have just returned from the summit, and tell me how to beath the best on the way up, proving ... read more

As I promised, here is part 2 of my Japan adventure. This entry will finish off the photos from the Izu peninsula and then I will talk about Kyoto in the 3rd part. More mountains, flowers, clouds, sea and food to see! I also have included the crazy maze of a journey that we had at our first (Hotel) that has 14 different pictures to capture the journey from our personal room to the front door (exit). In between each picture I took several steps. It really was a very long (exciting) walk. Along with all of that there are extensive Waterfall pictures! I need to get the pictures from my parents of me swimming in the waterfall!!!! :) SOOOO cool! OOH! and a sprial bridge!!! 3 times!!! heehee! It all ends with a mountain top ... read more
