I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! Woohoooo!!! One of my favourite things in Japan and right here in my street!! We had heard about this festival before, but didnt know when it was or anything. To our utter delight we arrived home from kindy on Wednesday afternoon to find vendors setting up stalls and preparations being made for walking on hot coals!!!! Yes you heard right- the very thing that Nigel Smart did that could have cost him his football career! And Marissa and I did it without one blister!! We are now assured to have good luck for a year! I am so behind in my blogging that I was going to abridge all the events from the last couple of weeks so you wouldn’t have to spend an hour reading this entry. But how can you abridge a Fuji story?! Plus, there’s not much more to add except that I spent $1000.00 on new furniture last weekend after feeling a bit of disgust and depression at the oldness (and consequent bugginess, mousiness, moldiness, style-less-ness, etc.) of my house. I’ll post pictures as soon as my stuff is delivered/assembled. So here’s the real story: Two weeks ago, after a week of confinement with my fellow foreigners at KAPIC (the Kagoshima Asia-Pacific Intercultural Centre) for a week-long Japanese course, I felt like I needed a break. Although the course was supposed to be an opportunity to relax, ... read more

A weekend of birthday celebrations for Amy began with a dinner at Doma Doma on Friday night with the kindy staff. On Saturday night we went to an izakaya with Matt, Simon and friends of friends. On Sunday, Amy's actual birthday, we had a barbeque on the beach! We were well prepared, plenty of food, drinks (including Japanese Passion Pop), fireworks and Aussie stubbie coolers! We even bought a barbeque for the occasion! The weather was perfect and the drinks were flowing well into the late afternoon and evening! When we were all packed up, the party moved to Our Boozer, where shots were had and sauce was drunk! A great, very memorable day and night!... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! Its my birthday, Happy Birthday!!! Well who would have thought on the 3rd September 1983 that on the 3rd September 2006 I would be celebrating my 23rd birthday in Japan!!!! Certainly not me, in fact if you had told me on my 22nd birthday last year that next year I would be celebrating my birthday in Japan I would have laughed and told you to have another drink. But things change, and sometimes doing something that you never dreamed you would do can turn out to be the best thing youve ever done. Ok enough philosophising... ... read more

Last Saturday night I did something that is considered unwise: I climbed Mt. Fuji for the second time. There is a Japanese saying which states, "A wise person will climb Mt. Fuji once, but only a fool will climb it twice." Well, I guess I am a fool because at 7am on Saturday morning I boarded a bus with 42 other Hiroshima prefecture English teachers and embarked on the 11-hour bus ride to Station 5 of Mt. Fuji. I think it is important here to clarify that it was not entirely my decision to climb the mountain for a second time. Actually, I didn't really have a choice, and neither did Casey. Within the JET Programme community in Japan there is a national organization called AJET, which then branches out into prefectural groups. This year, ... read more

Also, i miss you all and ive loved your comments and messages so keep sending them if you can!! Last weeked Rich, Junco, and I climbed Mt. Fuji. Junco says they have a saying here that if you climb mt fuji twice, you are a fool. i think that i might agree, although it was definitely something im very glad i experienced. So, for anyone considering the climb to mt fuji, let me describe the process: 1) you will leave your place in tsukuba ... read more

After a lot of pestering, mum and dad finally decided to come and visit me in Japan! Sunday Amy and I just arrived back in Tokyo from Hokkaido and checked into another hostel, ready to meet mum and dad the next morning. Mum called that night and said that their flight had been delayed and they were spending the night in Kuala Lumpur. Now our plans for me showing them round Tokyo couldn't happen, so instead of hanging around Tokyo for the day, Amy and I caught the shink back home in the morning. Mum and dad arrived in Tokyo later and came straight to Shizuoka (mainly cause Tokyo was too scary) and Amy and I were waiting for them at the station. After we showed off our super cool car park, we walked around the ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! Between returning from Hokkaido and heading on to Kyoto we spent a few days in Shiz with Marissas parents. Mrs Nagata had a BBQ with hilarious results- the Japanese really dont know how to do a barbecue like the Aussies- and Spiro was nearly beside himself at the lack of heat and know how on display!! We went to Mishima for their Summer Festival, and saw some traditional dances and costumes. Most importantly the clouds parted long enough for us to see Mt Fuji from the Shink station at Fuji City- thank you mountain goddess!!!! That ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! In Japanese 'mushi' means 'insect', and is most commonly heard in a kindergarten classroom or playground in the middle of Summer, with the child pointing at the insect in question. If the said insect is a spider, butterfly or any other of the thirty five million bug species in Japan the call "mushi mushi " is greeted with excitement. If the insect turns out to be your typical, stock standard Louie the fly, the reaction will be more like sheer terror, mass chaos and possibly tears. No kidding, the kids hate flies, but will gladly go ... read more

I am in Japan!!! A long way from Adelaide, Australia, but here I am in Shizuoka for a year teaching at an English Kindergarten while seeing and experiencing as much of this crazy, mixed up, amazing country as I can! Summer in Japan is fireworks season- you can buy them everywhere, convenience stores, supermarkets and the Lemon Shop, no matter how old you are. The kindy kids were even allowed to light them at their sleepover- admittedly these were not much better than sparklers but it still made me nervous!!! The Japanese call fireworks, and the festivities surrounding them hanabi- and on the 29th of July there was a festival on the Abe River- culminating in a 2 hour firework display!!! So, seeing as how we looooove a Japanese Festival and I looooove fireworks we went ... read more
