Tour Day 128, Cruise Day 26 – Shimizu, Japan – We had a notably topsy-turvy night getting to Shimizu, and, indeed, the captain announced we had aborted our first approach to the harbor because of the persistent high winds. Our second approach was successful, we arrived under brilliant blue skies and were greeted by a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji. My shore excursion didn’t begin until 1200 hours, so I circled the ship on the walking deck, watching the docking proceedings and taking several pictures I hope you enjoy. “Nihondaira Outlook & Kunozan Toshogu Shrine“ Shore Excursion Begin this spiritual day with a coach ride to Nihondaira Park Outlook -- a Prefecture Natural Park and the perfect spot to take in views of Suruga Bay and magnificent Mt Fuji (weather permitting). 2023_Blog 20_Japan April 9 Port of Call: Shimizu, Japan – Weather: Clear sunny skies - 57°F/14°C – Wind: 15 to 20 mph. As we sailed into harbor this Easter morning, we were greeted by a glorious sight of Mt. Fuji being bathed in sunlight and appeared to rise straight out of the sea. We had been told that this was quite a remarkable sight as the mountain is frequently wrapped in clouds and not visible. Now that we have seen it, legend holds that we will come back to Japan once again. Our excursion for the day included a visit to the Shinto Kambe-jinja Shrine with its highly decorative wooden buildings. As with all the shrines visited on this trip this one presented the viewer with an explosion of color, fantastic carvings overlaid with a feeling ... read more

The end of the school year here is approaching fast, just 2 weeks to go!!! All of MEK went on an excursion yesterday to the Science Marine Museum. It was the first time I have been there and i was very cool for the children. They got to see a lot of different fish and dinosaur bones. The children had a shared lunch with their mothers and some fathers. There was a farewell for Marissa and Cate who will be leaving Japan in a few weeks for their next adventure. The children sang 'You are my sunshine', to them and they both gave a small speech. It was a nice way to start the week Enjoy the photos (especially Amy) ... read more

We survived! (sigh of relief!!!) Mixing the travel styles of a 25 year old, poor backpacker and two 50 year old first class travelers (who might I add definitely deserve to travel first class after all of their hard work in life :), is a bit of a challenge but I must say that overall I think we did a really good job. Besides the small finger marks on my neck that still burn a bit to the touch, hahah, my mom, dad and I managed to traipse through the trains, buses and subways of Tokyo, Shizuoka and Kyoto relatively unscathed. And although the trip was a far cry from the luxurious vacation that my hard working parents deserve, all in all I think it went pretty well. I won't get into the nitty gritty of ... read more

On the weekend Shimizu held the Tanabata festival. I have mentioned in a pervious blog what Tanabata is but just to refresh your memory it is: From Wikipedia Tanabata (?? tanabata?), meaning "Seven Evenings") is a Japanese star festival, derived from Obon traditions and the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi. The festival is usually held on July 7, and celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year. This special day is the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. People generally celebrate this day by writing wishes, sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku (?? tanzaku?), small pieces of paper, and hanging them on ... read more

I have to admit I have not been taking the best care of myself lately. As my dad knows (and often reminds me of) when I am at home, I have a tendency to "burn the candle at both ends" and wear myself out. Well doing too much finally caught up with me on Saturday. I woke up exhausted after a full night sleep and all day at work my muscles were aching and my energy levels were really low. It didn't help that I had a special Easter Kids Event to start the day off...I love teaching kids but it is definitely exhausting. Saturday evening I went to bed early and woke up late (forgoing my usual morning run) to get as much rest as possible. It was pouring rain so I decided to take ... read more

I have to admit it's a bit of a lonely evening tonight. Joe left yesterday to head back to the states and I just got back from work a little while ago and cooked some chicken and veggies and tofu for dinner. Dawn is still at work and so I have the whole apartment to myself, a big change from just a day ago when I was lucky enough to have a constant travel buddy. This past week has been by far my favorite week in Japan so far. I have to say I was pretty lucky to have one of the greatest guys in the world come all the way across the Pacific Ocean to spend some time with me in Japan. Joe arrived on Monday and stayed until yesterday (Saturday) morning. Two of ... read more

What a crazy day at work today. My adult classes and my senior kids class were fine, but I had a kinder class that went horrible today ;). April is the beginning of the new school year in Japan and so this was my first week with a new kinder class. I had 3 of the girls previously in another class, but there were two boys in class today who I had for the first time and they were not too excited about having me as a teacher (gotta love kids for their honesty). They both refused to talk at all during class today and one of them even started crying and left class to go sit with his parents outside the classroom. Am I really that scary????? Needless to say I felt like a horrible ... read more
