A gorgeous sunny and warm day - so a perfect day to head out on an excursion to Nara. We headed out on the train at 9 for the hour trip. Nara is not that far from Kyoto, and is a much smaller town. It is known for...wait for it...it's temple! Todaiji Temple is noteworthy though - it is HUGE! I took pictures but the scale doesn't come through until I got someone in one of the pictures. They say that this is the largest wooden structure standing, and I believe it. Again with the deer who look much too mangy and tired. Some nice streets to stroll and window shop. And home on the 4pm train. I am really struggling to beat this cold, but am on the back side of it now I think. ... read more

Wednesday afternoon I arrived in Nara which is about 45 minutes from Kyoto. I checked into my hotel, which took a bite out of my budget, but there was absolutely nothing else available. It was raining when I got in, but I stopped in at a shop a picked up an umbrella and toured the city. They have this big dear park in Nara, where all these dear just roam about freely. There not even really fenced-in and you occasionally see them walking around on the sidewalks and the road, around temples etc. I watched as this Japanese couple tried feeding one of them, but then bascially got swarmed by a group of dear who were hiding out in the bushes. I just watched in amusement as they tried to get away but kept getting cornered ... read more

Well, just had a great day... And by great I mean that I did not freeze. The weather was rather pleasant in fact, though the sun was that insipid northern hemisphere you-can-see-it-but-you-can't-feel-it type of thing. The weekend's weather was good too. There is hope for my toes afterall. Enough boring mumble... About my weekend. It started on a jolly note on friday night with a trip down to one of the local Izakayas (not sure how close that is to romanji spelling). One of my mates celebrated her birthday on thurday so we had to celebrate it the Japanese way: SAKE all the way! Tried out several Japanese bar snacks, a lil more interesting than the conventional bowl of peanuts! We had deepfried tofu with veg in some saucy stuff, salty soybeans in pods that you ... read more

TODAY IT SNOWED!!! And properly this time! There was a leetle bit of snow the night before last (while I was ignorantly snuggled up in my futon) and a tiny bit while I was at the train station in Hirakata on the way to Nara yesterday. But today... It was awesome. I was amoung a handful of previously disadvantaged no-snow-havers who legitimately enjoyed riding my bike to school in the snow this morning. I rode with an aussie and a yank, and the yank was bewildered by our whoops of delight in the frozen weather. My concentration in class was decidedly lacking, but hey... I'm just a poor student from deepest darkest Africa (Minami Afurica to the Japanese). Statistically, I should be malnourished and uneducated. Though I'm niether of those, I am still illiterate... But that ... read more

Today we moved into the lovely double room (from a triple) with an exceptionally comfy duvet. Then we headed out to Nara on the very slow train that stopped at all destinations. Nara itself is dominated by a beautiful park full of deer. You can buy deer biscuits at every stall and loads of Japanese tourists were taking zillions of photos feeding deer then running away squealing from deer chasing them when the food ran out! The park also contains Kofukuji-in with a fab 5 storey pagoda in front of a lake (empty in winter!) where we watched a curious deer enter a souvenir shop and then watched the assistants' pathetic attempt to get it out by shouting and waving a broom in its general direction. Highly amusing. The deer eventually left of its own accord. ... read more

Today I went to the ancient capital of Japan, Nara. Nara served as Japan’s capital around the 8th century. Nara does not have the number of shrines and temples of Kyoto and is not a large city but has its own charm all the same and was one of my favorite places I have visited yet. Nara is filled with parks, and these parks and the surrounding city are filled and I mean filled with deer. I went to Nara with my friend Lisa who attended USF last year as an exchange student and is great. Nara has some of the oldest shrines and temples in Japan. Our first stop was Todaiji Temple Complex, maybe the most famous in Japan. Todaiji is home to the largest wooden building in the world, the Daibutsu-den, which is ... read more

Whoo, it's been a while since I've written! I've been busy, in a good way, and this is the first time I've really sat down and made time to write. Okay, let's see... last Saturday? I think it was, Jim and I headed off to Kyoto once more, this time without a map or guidebook. Our goal was to find his hotel for during break, which we did quickly, and then just explore. So, wandering around the Gojo - Kujo section of the city, we discovered Nishihonganji, the other temple where the Shinsengumi were based. Also the head temple of the Pure Land sect of Buddhism and still very active today. It was quite awesome. We then headed off again, found a nice park/garden, and eventually ended up at Toji. It's the home of the tallest ... read more

We didn't realise quite how close we were to Nara while in Osaka. Most of our journeys between places have taken around 3-4 hours and involved at least one change of train, how lucky we were this time that the local train station next to out hotel, in the middle of dodgesville, had a direct service to Nara that took 42 minutes, cash back. So we arrived here around 10am and as per usual we hit the tourist info looking for accommodation, there are two Youth Hostels here and we went for the bigger one as it's was recommended by the chic at tourist info who spoke teckle English, it's not the cheapest place we've been but we got a bed for a couple of nights and we spent next to nothing in Osaka, with hindsight ... read more
