So Jeff finally made it, and soon after he got to the hotel, it was time to go out and figure out our plans for the New Year. I heard that one temple was good, but on the internet I was reading that this one close by Gion had Maiko and Geisha there, and afterwards everyone gathered in the park to drink and dance. So that place sounded cool. We get there, and its crazy. SO many people were out there and in the temple little shops were set up that sold everything from fish on a stick, to wii and gameboy video games! We walk around the area, enjoying a nice view of the city at night and then go back towards the temple as its getting past 11pm. We see that a ton of ... read more

We took a day trip from Osaka on the train to visit Nara, a nice little peaceful city of 300 odd thousand people and famous for its series of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and an old imperial palace. Nara is also where hords of tame deer roam the city, the deer are regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, and roam the streets and parks freely. Whilst they didn't give me any messages, the presence of these creatures seemed to increase the calming impact of wandering around this very green city - I guess they stop people driving too fast too! We started off at the main attraction of Nara, the Tōdai-ji or Eastern Great Temple, a Buddhist temple complex containing the Great Buddha Hall, which is the largest all-wooden building in the ... read more

As you may know, the US carpet bombed Tokyo in World World II and spent the next 30 years after the war financing the rebuilding of Tokyo. That is why much of Tokyo is modern and there is very little of ancient Tokyo that still exists to visit. So while in Japan we visited other destinations such as Kyoto and Nara to see Ancient Temples and Shrines. You can get to Nara by train in about 30 minutes from Kyoto. We were told to treat it like a day trip, so we arrived in the morning and took the train back in the afternoon. Most of the memorable sites exists inside a large park called the Deer Park, which is said to be the home of 1200 deer. As you can see from the pictures, the ... read more

I am now a solo traveller once again...hostelling it...hooray! Before I left Sachiko and Namiko, we went to a small town called Nara. It used to be the capital of Japan many many years ago. Deer roamed the streets and liked invading your personal space. We visited the world's largest wooden building...it was quite overwhelming...not to mention the giant gold Buddah that sat peacefully inside. There was a vertical wooden beam at the back of the building with an arch shaped hole cut out from it at the bottom...this was to show the size of one of the Buddah's nostrils..kids could climb through it and even one lady who just about made it through! So now I've been exploring Japan alone...and already I'm loving being a free traveller again! On my last night in Kobe I ... read more

hello well first off nara was great wasnt there long, but its well worth going to, at least to go the temple and see the 16m high buddha. you can also try and climb/slide thru the the lucky pillar, i did try but as soon as my skinny ribs felt the inclosed space i flipped. (the same feeling as when i watch that dude in the pipe in 'aliens') anyway, havent done any other excursions. mole has now gone to hawaii, so im just bumming around til my flight, and catching mark a bit. its quite funny, mole spent 2 weeks winding me up that hes gonna sit on a beach in the sun and do nowt else, and i read that hawaii could be hit by a tropical storm. hope he'l be cool but he may ... read more

Day 7- An hour in Nara! We were told that we could use the shower at Hotel Toyo (around the block), if we wished to take a morning rinse. We met a British couple also waiting for the shower, and they gave us a bit of advice for our stay in Osaka and Kyoto. We had to wait until a Japanese man finished his shower before we were allowed in. The poor old man at reception felt so badly about it taking a very long time, but his culture did not allow him to confront the rude washer. We were given some bad advice about trains, and ended up looping around all of Osaka. Thank God for the help of the fellow passengers, although we did scare the sushi out of one of them.
