Abashiri – Monbetsu 77 miles At the base of Mt. Tento just a short distance from my camping ground next to Lake Abashiri lays the repositioned Abashiri Prison. When I heard the story of Abashiri prison and the abstract and harsh misery endured by its prisoners I felt compelled to pay a visit. The curiosity derived from the suffering of others a strange one, but if anything a valuable history lesson. In the late 19th century, fear of the Russian Empire’s expansion further east led the Meiji government to stake a claim upon the wilds of Hokkaido. Prior to the intervention of the ruling party the north of Hokkaido was just as wild as that of Siberia, a small conclave of fishing villages cut off from the world by an ocean of forest. However, Abashiri’s northerly ... read more

The road out of Highashimokoto continued in the same hilly prevalence from where it had left off yesterday. Yet the rise and fall of the landscape would today be the least of my concerns. As a far more brutally sinister enemy raged from the east, an enemy cruel and merciless, and an enemy that on this day would take no prisoners. That enemy being the wind, the unrelenting, soul destroying wind that over the coming hours would completely dismantle any progress in the direction of Shiretoko National Park. In some 4 hours I managed a pathetically meagre 20 miles, I was very much getting my arse kicked. I needed to conjure up a new strategy. Finding a desolate and sheltered wooden shack of a bus stop to the side of the road I would pitch a ... read more

If you see a bear, and the bear notices you, do not panic. Do not run. Raise your arm into the air, wave it side to side and speak calmly to let her know that you are a human and will not harm her. Do not offer her food… I assume that the bear will then walk away, as there are no further instructions. Fortunately, the bears that I saw, I observed from the deck of a passing boat, and the bears were far enough away that they looked like medium sized dogs with puppies. Today I made my way back to civilisation. Don't get me wrong, I like Abashiri. It's a nice quiet little place, I don't think it's classified as a town but then there are many smaller towns in England so maybe it is. After checking out of the hotel (Hokuten no Oka if anybody is interested, about 10 minutes drive from the station - the hotel can pick you up from the station if you let them know), and bid a very long farewell with the only English speaking staff there (Miura Yuuko-San, one of the loveliest person I have met this trip), the hotel shuttle bus dropped me back at the station. My train was at 1329, so I have some time to kill. I stuffed my suitcase in one of those infamous coin lockers, which ... read more

Today started with a massive breakfast in the hotel before being dropped off at Abashiri prison museum. Pretty much the only thing I wanted to go to when I planned this trip and Abashiri being one of the stops. There's something mysterious about the old prison (now a museum). One but thousands of prisoner escaped. The prisoners also BUILT Abashiri. I spent about two hours there and then I wanted to go to the Drift Ice ( Ryuhyo) museum. The map said it's only down the road. The staffs at the prison said it's only 20 minutes walk up the road. I think I might have mistaken something somewhere because it was about an hour's walk when I got there. Maybe she meant 20 minutes drive. I wasn't sure, she's got a bit of an accent ... read more

Yesterday after I posted my entry, I actually went out and ventured into the snow. There was a snow storm earlier during the day whilst I was travelling from the airport to the hotel. Why knew? I fell into a deep sleep when I was on the bus. It was and hour and a half. So when I ventured about last night, I went to find food. Of course I went to one of the oldest and most popular restaurant - a restaurant based on sumo wrestler meals. It's basically Japanese style fondue (hotpot) with lots of vegetables and meat. I chose seafood. The spider crab legs were amazing. And so was everything else. And I had sashimi with it, of course. I finished the meal with a strawberry Marion Crêpe for dessert. As usual. They ... read more

Day 14 Iwaobetsu to Abashiri. Simple buffet breakfast with soup, toast, cold noodles in mayonnaise, yoghurt and a few unknowns. Sunny and high 20's again - not complaining. Out of the door and straight up the hill for 2 miles at 7%. This was followed by a descent back to the coast, which we followed for 20 miles. The first town of Utoro was very nice with a fishing harbour and large brown rocks standing in the sea near the coast. It reminded me of the East coast at Scarborough and Whitby. Along the way there were also some quite good waterfalls streaming down into the sea, one spectacular one called Oshin Koshin. Cormorants were also seen basking on rocks close by and waiting for a bite to eat. I managed to get quite a good ... read more

Day 9 Abashiri My it is hot here in Abashiri Town and with the fan on low to keep the noise down we slept badly and at 5.30 I got up to try the Notebook on WiFi before anyone else was on but still it would not work. This means doing this blog on my phone and no photos yet. Most of us chose an educational morning with a visit to the Museum of the People's of the North. This traced many of the Inuits that survived in the North such as Alaska, Russia, Norway etc. It was a very interesting visit tracing their customs, way of life, their food sources, the clothing they made and the tools and equipment produced from available materials such as bone and wood. One interesting fact was their use of ... read more

Day 8. Lake Saroma to Abashiri The floor bed was quite comfortable again but the deep sleep was rudely awakened at 4am by the fishing boats powering out to sea. The sound was like a huge lorry with no silencer outside the window going nowhere. After 15 mins of this I realised that we had left the window open and promptly closed them and reduced the noise by 30 decibels to 95 in just a second. Consequently we were late up but were treated to a 'get your own' breakfast which included some westernised food such as scrambled egg and bread. The temperature was pretty high again at about 30 deg. C when we got away at 9.15. The going was generally quite flat today with only about 400m of climbing in 55 miles and was ... read more
