Our first stop on the Indonesian island of Sumatra was Bukit Lawang, 90km northwest of Medan. This small village is set back from the Bahorok river and covered in the dense Sumatran jungle. Famous for it’s orangutan feeding platform; the small village has become a popular tourist attraction. Unfortunately, this comes with its downsides as the locals are very pushy to send tourists on expensive tours into the jungle and can often exploit the animals as a consequence. On a limited budget we resisted the strong sales tactics of the locals and opted to visit the feeding platform costing only a fraction of the price. On a daily basis the rangers visit the platform with rucksacks full of milk and bananas to feed the semi-wild orangutans, giving tourists a chance to see them too. Originally the ... read more

I had an aunt and an uncle who went to South West Rocks 36 years in a row for their January holidays. Why? “South West Rocks has everything you could possibly need. A beach and a bowling club with a top Chinese Restaurant” they said. Uncle Sid and Aunty Jean living on the edge. What is it that draws people back to the same holiday distination on a regular basis? Perhaps that particular locale ticked all the boxes required for their hit and run vacation time and there’s a sense of comfort in the familiarity. I suppose that’s pragmatism defined but, “Where’s the adventure”? Having said that, there are quite a few dots on this earth we’ve retraced and would do so again given the chance. Offer me a ticket to Paris tomorrow and I’ll go ... read more

Having spent a couple of weeks in Malaysia, I was keen to explore the less-visited Indonesian island of Sumatra - which promised an enchanting mix of culture, nature and wildlife . Our trip begins in the small remote jungle community of Tangkahan, where we spend the afternoon bathing and feeding elephants in a nearby river . From here we traverse along bumpy roads to Bukit Lawang and embark on a jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park . A memorable wildlife encounter unfolds as we get up close and personal with six orangutans (three mothers and babies) in the wild . It's incredible how human-like some of their behavioural patterns and expressions are !! Trekking through the jungles of this large National Park that is home to orangutans, gibbons, monkeys and more is certainly one of ... read more

And the story continues... De volgende dag schijnt t zonnetje gelukkig weer. Yeah! Maar ... read more

On Tuesday morning we left our hostel in Bukit Lawang to find our driver who was going to take us on the four hour journey to Berastagi. After settling into the car, the driver announced that the car was unsafe to drive and that we needed to switch cars. We had to trust that the next car we were asked to climb into was safer. The whole process wasted 30 minutes of travelling time, but we eventually set off. Marc plugged his iPod in and we faced the same problem that we had in Chin's car... the same order of random songs came on with no way to select what song would come on next. This becomes surprisingly frustrating, believe us. The drive to Berastagi was frightening. Sumatran roads are very narrow and covered in potholes ... read more

We arrived back in Medan on Wednesday night to visit the hospital which was spectacular, and looked just like a fancy American hospital you see in films. We were seen straight away and Susie was given a course of antibiotics and would feel better in five days- yay! Instead of a taxi queue outside of the hospital, there is a hospital official organising tuk tuk rides for cheap prices. We arrived back at the hotel and hung up all of our wet clothes, as the climate in Berastagi made it impossible for them to dry. We enjoyed a long lie the next morning and treated ourselves to a KFC for breakfast. We headed back to Medan airport to catch our flight to the region of Lombok. We had had a fantastic time in Sumatra, but we ... read more

We arrived at the entrance to Bukit Lawang to a crowd of locals surrounding the car. The driver rolled down his window to a man who peered into the car and asked for 'Marcs Hunter?'. We were relieved that after the ordeal of the morning, something had gone right and the guy from our hostel was here to greet us. However we had to walk 15 minutes into pedestrianised (mopeds only) town that ran along the river. Bukit Lawang is a very simple and beautiful town situated on the edge of the jungle. We arrived at our hostel in a sweaty mess and grabbed a couple of well earned brews. The hostel was a lot busier than any we had stayed at before. The complex was a very quaint set of two story blocks with 4 ... read more

We flew from Colombo to Kuala Lumpur to Medan, which is the capital city on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. We expected a pretty small and shabby airport, forgetting that the airports in Indonesia are very new. So it was a pleasant surprise when we landed and arrived at a fresh and clean airport. Straight away we were met by smiling Indonesians who taught us how to say 'thank you' which is 'terima kasih'. We jumped in a taxi with a man who had very little English but a lot of knowledge of football players. English teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea have in recent seasons come to places like Indonesia during pre season to play tournaments and train, with the end goal of increasing their global fan base and potential revenue streams. Pulau Weh It’s like swimming in a fish bowl when snorkeling in Pulau Weh. I am sitting on our bungalow balcony, the view is stunning. I look down at the golden sand with palm trees stretching out over the beach, people eating lunch on the deck, others reading on deck chairs, local mums swimming in their clothes, head scarfs still in place. Children are laughing, splashing, swimming and jumping off the platform anchored out in the sea. Tourists’ are snorkelling, the water so crystal clear we can see their entire bodies in the water and the shadow of the coral underneath. Local wooden fishing boats motor past looking for the next spot to put their line out. Local boys snorkelling far out spearing fish for dinner. A “cock a doodle do” crows in the background, as ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Bukittinggi July 23rd 2015

In the late afternoon, after two days of travelling (please check my previous blogpost, if interested), we arrived in Bukittinggi. Bukittinggi means in Indonesian “High Hill”, and it does lay almost 1000 meter above sea level. Having a human population of almost 120.000 people, Bukittinggi is the second biggest city of Western Sumatra. Padang, is the capital of West Sumatra and the biggest city of this area. During the Dutch establishment, the Dutch East Indian Company, Bukittinggi was known as the “Paris of Sumatra”, and currently in the Netherlands, Bukittinggi is still know for. The Dutch also had an impact on the city, by building a fort called “Fort de Kock”, which I will further discuss down below. The City has some great sightseeing’s you can do, but the nature around the city is also great ... read more
